Breath of Fire Kundalini Yoga Breathing Exercise Video

Free Online Yoga Pranayama Video #1

The article Breath of Fire Breathing Exercise which is chapter 1 of the Free Online Breathing Exercises (Yoga Pranayama) E-Book gives copious details on this powerful and important Kundalini Yoga pranayama.  The Breath of Fire is a key component of Kundalini Yoga Kiryas and as its been detailed heavily in that chapter already, I don’t want to rehash the information here.  Instead, I will just highlight the most important aspects of this yoga pranayama and move ahead to the video.

This king kong of pranayamas helps you detoxify your system, oxygenate your blood, magnify the benefits of the Kundalini Yoga exercise you are doing and generate terrific energy within.  If you suffer from heat related issues or high blood pressure, you should use caution when practicing Breath of Fire.

The yoga instruction video below goes over these details and more.  Here are some quick highlights of what the video covers:

  • Detailed instructions of the beginner, intermediate and advanced versions of Breath of Fire.
  • Discussion of the most common mistakes and difficulties when doing Breath of Fire and demonstration of how NOT to do this kundalini yoga pranayama.
  • General guidance on this powerful breathing exercise.

Hello Anmol, I really liked your breath of fire video. How often should one practice breath of fire? Thanks, La Vonne

    Hi La Vonne,

Glad to know you enjoyed the video. It was our first so am happy it has come across well.

Great question too :-). The article Breath of Fire Breathing Exercise has these details, but I will summarize quickly below.

If you are doing a set such as the Kundalini Yoga Morning Wake Up Series, it has Breath of Fire built in so you don’t need to practice extra, but if you are doing Breath of Fire as a separate exercise I suggest to start gently and build up to 1 minute per day.

From there you can increase to 3, 5 and even 11 mins at a stretch. Remember not to overdo it and only move forward when you can do so without excessive strain. You can also take breaks in between and then continue when ready.

Breath of Fire is great to use right before a set to get your energy going. 2 minutes is perfect for that.

Let me know if you run across any issues.

    All Good Wishes,
    Anmol

    Hey Bendz,

Great to have your presence and participation here on Mastery of Meditation.

Am glad you enjoyed the pranayama video. Yes, Breath of Fire is very effective in raising the internal heat, which is one of the reasons why it’s a great pranayama for detoxification as well.

    Happy to share my knowledge.

    All Good Wishes,

    Dear Anmol Mehta,
is it normal to sweat during breath of fire? and also how long before or after can we eat or drink water?
    best wishes,
    Key

  9. Anmol Mehta said,

    on December 9th, 2007 at 8:29 pm

    Dear Key,

Yes, it is normal to sweat during Breath of Fire. If you have high blood pressure or suffer from acid/heat related stomach issues, then you need to only do this pranayama lightly.

You should not eat at least 2-3 hours prior to doing Breath of Fire. Specially not a big meal, a small snack is ok.

You should sip water as required during the yoga practice, but afterwards you should drink plenty of water. This is because the kundalini yoga sets and pranayamas are designed to detoxify your system, and the toxins that are released from deep within your tissues need to be flushed out of your system after the set. So drink plenty of water after you are done with your practice.

Kapalabharathi taught by Swami Ramdev say not to breath? You mention equal importance on inhaling? I am confused please advice?

    on December 23rd, 2008 at 11:15 pm

    Dear Ram,

Here is the article and details of Kapalbhati Pranayama. Which is as you mention, only emphasis on exhalation (same as Swami Ramdev).

    Kapalbhati Yoga Pranayama

This article is Kundalini Yoga Breath of Fire (which is not the same as Kapalbhati).

If you are not really inhaling during this does that mean you are holding your breath the whole time? I can’t seem to do this for very long because it feels like I am holding my breath while doing the “sniffing” and I run out of air.

  23. Anmol Mehta said,

    on January 7th, 2009 at 4:47 pm

    Hi Diogen,

The key to breath of fire is that you inhale and exhale the same amount when “sniffing”. Don’t tense your diaphragm, or try to hold your breath. Keep it soft and then just focus on shallow rapid breathing at the tip of the nose.

If you are running out of air, it means you are exhaling more per sniff than inhaling.

It takes time to master this techniques, but it’s worth the effort.

    Best,
    Anmol

[…] As I do have prior knowledge of pranayama, either taught to me by my meditation teacher or picked up from various yoga books, I have put together a short practice for myself. I’m sort of making it up as I go, but basically doing Breath of Fire, Alternate Nostril Breathing, and working on the upper two locks: jalandhara bandha (chin lock) and uddiyana bandha (abdominal lock). The entire practice so far is lasting about 15 minutes, but I will probably lengthen it as I get used to the practice, and as time permits. […]

    Hi Anmol,

First I want to thank you for this great site and all the information here. THANK YOU!
    Have a question about BOF.
Is the 11 min maximum time for BOF by itself?

I started practicing BOF on Feb 1st (tried many times before, but always got frustrated and gave up). In the beginning I could do it for 30 sec. It was hard, I would get hot and sweaty. It took me 41 days to get to 5 min. Than it became easier. I got to 11 min, and … what a difference, what a feeling!
I have to admit I ignored the menstruating rule and practice every day (I am a marathon runner, I don’t stop running when menstruating; besides I was afraid I would loose the rhythm).
This morning during BOF, as I could feel the energy moving in my body, around my body, and on the top of my head (?!), I did not want to stop. INCREDIBLE FEELING! I did BOF for 13 min; after I stopped (as I was sitting motionless), I still could feel the energy moving for some time. AWESOME!
    Thank you,
    Dagmar

Great to hear you are enjoying and benefiting from the website and thank you for sharing your fascinating experiences with us.

Yes Breath of Fire can be practiced by itself as well. Great to see you experiencing first hand what these powerful pranayamas can do.

    Dear Anmol,

your website and the yoga vidoes have been recommended to me by my Indian friends. I am absolutely stunned by the clarity of your explanation and the attention to details.

I have one question about the breath of fire: can it be practised during various yoga exercises, or simply during walking or other daily routines, or is the sitting position the only appropriate one?

    Thanks,

    Tomasz

    Dear Tomasz,

Sorry I have not been able to respond to you earlier. Working on getting more staff to help out :-).

Yes absolutely you can creatively use Breath of Fire in combination with any exercise, yoga or otherwise, or just as an exercise in itself, or during regular activities such as walking, driving, etc.

    Best,
    Anmol
