Hatha Yoga Postures Illustrations  E-Book

Welcome to the Free Online Hatha Yoga Poses Galleries.  Hatha yoga poses are the basis of many types of yoga and this e-book is going to house an ongoing illustrated collection of these important yoga postures and exercises.  This book will complement the Free Online Illustrated Kundalini Yoga Exercises E-book, which focuses on the Kundalini Yoga Poses available on the website.

These hatha yoga galleries are going to reflect those poses that are specific to hatha yoga, and from this page you will find links to all these online illustrations.  Please note those postures that are a part of both kundalini yoga and hatha yoga are linked to from both books.  As new poses are added to the website they are linked to from this page, so this is a good page to bookmark if you are interested in Hatha Yoga.

The hatha yoga poses from this book are used extensively in the Free Online Yoga & Meditation Classes that are offered on this website.

The layout of the book is as follows:

The book is divided into sections, each of which is a gallery of a particular category of hatha yoga poses.  Such as seated poses, standing poses, inverted postures, etc. As new poses are added to the website, they are placed in the particular gallery they belong to and are then linked to from this page.  So this page is an up to date portal into all the hatha yoga illustrations available to you.

For each illustrated hatha yoga pose the following is provided:

  • Background and overview of that particular yoga exercise.
  • Step by step detailed instructions of how to practice that pose.
  • Benefits and cautions of each posture.
  • Practice tips to help you master that particular pose.
  • Pictures of the pose and pictures of the various modifications available for that pose.

[…] Undoubtedly by now news of the vast benefits of meditation must have reached you. Study after study have been empirically validating what the ancient masters have been saying for generations, there is nothing quite like meditation. Meditation is good for your mind, body and soul, but what kind of meditation should you practice in order to extract these wonderful benefits? That is the topic of this article. Of all the various meditation techniques that exist, the following are the top 3. 1. Zen Meditation Technique: One of the greatest meditation techniques is that of the Lord Buddha, Zen Buddhist Meditation Technique, or Zazen. This technique was put forth by Lord Buddha and is the heart of Zen Buddhist practice. It is based on concentration on the breath and is a silent, seated meditation. Beginner’s should start Zazen practice be sitting up straight and still and counting their breaths from one to ten. Count every inhalation and exhalation starting with one and when you get to ten, start at one again. If at any time your mind wanders away and you lose count, gently bring your attention back to the breath and start again at one. As you get more proficient with this method, you can drop the counting and just start attending to the breath. Normally it take at least six months or more (could take years) to move ahead to this version. Don’t worry though, all along the meditation will be working for you, helping uplift and raise your level of consciousness and awareness. 2. Mantra Meditation Technique: Mantra meditation forms the heart of the Hindu faith and it’s effectiveness has also been proven by centuries of successful application. In mantra meditation, you pick a mantra that suits you and then repeat it mentally or out loud continuously. This technique, just like Zen Meditation, will help develop your concentration, mental focus and awareness. One of the best mantra meditations is So Hum Mantra Meditation. In this version, as you inhale you think the sound Soooo, and as you exhale you think the sound Hummm. So Hum means I am That. It implies that you and divinity are one. This mantra is great for opening the heart center and allowing unconditional love to flow. 3. Chakra Meditation Technique: The third best meditation technique for extracting and enjoying the vast benefits of meditation is Chakra Meditation. There are several kinds of chakra meditation and here I will go over the most used ones. Chakras are considered energy vortexes which when balanced lead to you being balanced physically and emotionally. The various chakra meditation techniques looks to open and balance these vortexes using the attributes that the chakras have. Here are two commonly used methods to open and balance the chakras. 1. Concentration on the Chakra Point: The first method you can use to activate a chakra is by concentrating on its physical location in the body. As you concentrate on the location, you bring the energy of awareness there, which then works to open that energy center. 2. Chakra Mantra Meditation: Associated with each chakra is a seed sound, or beej mantra. Chanting this should is a direct and powerful way to open and balance that particular center. One word of caution with chakra meditation is that one should not open these centers too forcefully or quickly. Slow and steady is the name of the game. Summary: So there you have the three best meditation techniques to explore, learn and benefit from. I hope you embrace this wonderful science and I hope it helps you reach your full potential in this life. Anmol Mehta is a modern Yoga & Meditation master. […] Ayurveda Diet for Healthy Weight Loss By: Anmol MehtaFor safe and healthy weight loss, the profound sciences of Yoga and Ayurveda form a powerful combination. Yoga providing a system of exercises which help to burn fat, increase metabolism and promote fitness, while Ayurveda providing the guidelines for proper diet and nutrition. In this article I will explore Ayurveda, which is the science of self-healing and longevity.A key concept in Ayurveda is that of the 3 Doshas (humours): Vata, Pitta & Kapha. A combination of these 3 bodily humours are responsible for the makeup of our human body. This article is focused on the Kapha Dosha, which is responsible for fat and is the prevalent dosha in those who are overweight and obese. Thus, from a Yogic and Ayurvedic point on view, in order to burn fat and lose weight one must reduce Kapha in the body.As a quick review the following 3 most important points about Ayurveda need to be remembered:1. The qualities of Kapha Dosha are: Wet, Cold, Heavy, Dull, Soft, Sticky & Fixed2. Ayurvedic healing is based on the following 2 principles* Like Increases Like* Opposites Decrease Each Other3. There are many treatment methods in Ayurveda and of these we are focusing on Diet for weight loss in this article. In future posts I will detail other Ayruvedic recommendations to reduce weight, burn fat and get fit.So keeping the above in mind here are Ayurveda’s dietary recommendations for how to combat obesity, reduce fat and promote healthy weight loss.General Diet Composition to Burn Fat:* 30-40% of your diet should be whole grains.* 20-30% protein (from both vegetarian and non-vegetarian sources)* 40-50% mostly vegetables and some fruit.Specific Dietary Recommendations to Lose Weight:* Since like increases like, the qualities of Kapha should be a guide to help you choose the right type of foods to eat. So looking at it from that perspective one should reduce fatty foods, dairy, ice cream, meats (specially red meat) etc.* For drinks, stick to hot drinks instead of cold ones. Again use Kapha qualities as a road map to help you choose. Drink teas, hot water, instead of cold sodas and milk shakes.* Since opposites decrease each other, use more hot spices in your food. Ginger, cinnamon, coriander and other hot spices will all work to help you reduce Kapha, which is the key to reducing weight. The tastes you should shoot for in your diet are pungent, bitter and astringent. Foods with these tastes are all anti-Kapha and will assist in burning fat. The tastes you should generally avoid are sweet, sour and salty.* Similarly increase salads, beans, dry cereals and cooked grains in your diet. Eating foods with Vata and Pitta qualities will increase those doshas in your body and will work against increasing Kapha.* Eat one big meal a day and make it either your lunch or your breakfast.* To avoid snacking, have a glass of hot lemonade made with honey. This will help burn fat and keep away the hunger. Conclusion:I hope what you begin to see with Ayurveda is that it gives you the knowledge and framework within which you can then customize the treatments you need using your intelligence. That’s why I call Ayurveda the science of Self Healing. Once you know the basic concepts, you can readily apply them to deal with any health situation that life throws at you.Specifically for weight loss understand the qualities of Kapha Dosha and tailor your diet and life style to reduce it. When you reduce Kapha you reduce fat. From a dietary perspective, simply reduce intake of food with the same qualities and increase intake of food with opposite qualities.Anmol Mehta is a Yoga Teacher & Zen Expert.
