Powerful Chakra Meditation to Open Third Eye
Third Eye Chakra Meditation Technique
Charka Meditation from Kundalini Yoga
Third Eye Chakra Meditation Technique Background
One of the best chakra meditation techniques is of course the traditional AUM Mantra Meditation to Open the Third Eye, and in this article I am going to give another great chakra meditation technique for opening the all important Third Eye which comes directly from the school of Kundalini Yoga.
Opening and balancing the Third Eye Chakra (Ajna Chakra) is a key step in one’s spiritual evolution, as the Third Eye is the seat of intuition, and having this center functioning optimally gives one access to the guidance of the Inner Guru. To learn more about the chakras you can read the article, Kundalini Yoga Seven Chakra System Overview.
This particular chakra meditation technique uses many different facets of Kundalini Yoga technology to accomplish it’s goals. It uses the power of Yoga Breathing (Pranayama), Yoga Mudras (Eye and Hand Positions), Yoga Numerology, Visualization and the power of Concentration Meditation to activate and open the Third Eye Chakra.
Briefly, the Third Eye chakra is located in the center of the brain and can be stimulated by concentrating on center of the forehead, in between the eyebrows. As mentioned above, the Third Eye Chakra is responsible for intuition and controls the function of the eyes and perception. It is related to the number 16, and AUM is the seed sound for it. Another article which explores chakra meditation techniques, which might interest you, is the following: Top 3 Chakra Meditation Techniques.
This Third Eye Chakra Meditation Technique is the 10th meditation in our Free Online Guided Meditation Techniques E-Book.
Benefits of Third Eye Chakra Meditation Technique:
Primary Benefits:
- Opens the Third Eye Chakra, building intuition and insight.
- Builds mental fortitude, mental focus and willpower.
- Calms the mind and bestows inner peace and silence.
- Promotes the acquisition of Psychic Powers.
- Helps penetrate the veil of duality and see the non-dual nature of Reality.
Secondary Benefits:
- Improves the visual system.
- Improves the respiratory system.
Cautions for Practicing Third Eye Chakra Meditation Technique:
- Initially this technique is certainly challenging to do. It will take some commitment as well as willpower on your part in order to master it, so be patient.
- If you use the additional emphasis on opening the Third Chakra by holding Shambhavi Mudra (explained below), make sure you are not straining your eyes excessively when doing so.
Third Eye Chakra Meditation Technique Illustration
Instructions for Practicing Third Eye Chakra Meditation Technique:
-
As per the illustration above, sit up on your heels in rock pose, raise your arms straight out to the sides at a sixty degree angle and have your hands bent at the wrist pointing outwards as shown. If rock pose is difficult for you, you may also sit in sukh asana (simple cross legged) or even on a chair for this meditation if you like.
-
Gather all your attention and focus on the center of your forehead, right between the eyebrows. You may feel a slight pressure, or other such sensation building there as you practice this meditation.
-
Now comes the hard part :-D. Start to inhale in sixteen parts and exhale in sixteen parts. This means that sixteen tiny sniffs will be used to make one inhalation and sixteen tiny sniffs will be used to make the following exhalation. Continue this breathing pattern for the duration of the meditation. If sixteen sniffs is too many, start with eight and build up from there.
- With every sniff visualize a tiny silver hammer tapping the center of the forehead. So 16 taps during the inhalation and 16 taps during the exhalation.
- Start with 1 minute, build up to 3 and then onto 11 mins. From there you may push further if you like, building up to 31 minutes.
Advanced Third Eye Chakra Meditation Technique:
- If you are comfortable with the above technique, and are ready for a greater challenge then apply Shambhavi Mudra throughout the practice to enhance the affect on the Ajna Chakra. Shambhavi Mudra is applied by keeping the head straight, eyes closed, but turning the eyeballs upwards such that you are trying to look through the center of the forehead. If you do apply Shambhavi Mudra, please do not strain the eyes and release it if the eyes tire, while continuing with the rest of the meditation.

Hello Anmol!
Yes, chakra meditation is direct and powerful. I personally find the lower 4 chakras especially responsive.
I work on all chakras mostly to promote balance in the system.
All the best!

1 question?
does making these sniffs is like the breath of fire technique?
on September 8th, 2008 at 8:25 pm
No it is not at all like Breath of Fire. Because in Breath of Fire you inhale and exhale repeatedly, very fast. Here you CONTINUOUSLY inhale 16 times to create 1 inhalation, then follow it up by 16 small, continuous exhalations to complete 1 full exhalation.
To modify, you can do 16 small sniffs continuously to do 1 inhalation, then exhale completely (without the 16 small sniffs), and then repeat, the 16 small sniffs for the next inhalation. This variation is fine too, but again it not like breath of fire.

Due to the sheer amount of meditation techniques available, I am unsure which ones to practise on a daily basis. Should I practise a different technique each day? Is there a good routine to follow?

Hi. How long will you feel the build/pressure in the forehead? I am feeling it and I’d just like to know how long it takes before that feeling goes. Thanks.
on May 7th, 2009 at 7:56 pm
Such pressure tends to modulate according to the intensity of your spiritual practice, especially if it includes any Third Eye or Silent Mediation Techniques.
Generally the feeling is enjoyed by aspirants as it serves as a reminder that there spiritual practice is working. So, essentially what I am saying is, is that as long as you practice, it is quite possible that you will have this pressure in your Third Eye region.

[…] 6 Important Guidelines for Designing Yoga Routines & Sets By: Anmol MehtaAt the heart of personal yoga practice, regardless of whether it is Hatha Yoga or Kundalini Yoga, lies yoga sets. The building block for these sets are, of course yoga poses and exercises, and how to put them together in order to design effective sets and routines is a key aspect of yoga as well. In this article I would like to give you six important guidelines on how to construct these sets.6 Guidelines for Designing Kundalini & Hatha Yoga Sets:1. Who Should Design Yoga Sets:Do not try to design a set if you are just beginning yoga practice. Attend some classes first and develop your personal practice before tying to design your own routines and sets. The last thing you want to do is practice yoga and create more injuries and imbalances for yourself.2. Yoga Sets Should be Balanced:This is one of the most important aspects of a yoga set. By balance here I mean that the poses that twist and stretch you one way, should at some point be balanced with poses that twist and stretch you the other way. Similarly, you should design sets that stretch both arms, both legs, etc, equally if possible. In addition, rotations done in one direction should be followed by rotations done in the other direction. So if in your set you have a backward bending yoga posture, then at some point it is wise to have a forward bending yoga pose as well. As an example, if you employ Cobra Pose early in your set, you can balance it with the Forward Bending Pose sometime later. This will ensure that you don’t end up creating sets after which you feel out of balance and un-centered.3. Chakras Work Should Be Done Low to High:In general the rule to follow, especially for Kundalini Yoga Kriyas, is to start working on the lower chakras first and then move up towards the higher chakras. So you would tend to do an exercise like Crow Pose, which works on the Root Chakra, early in the set and do Stretch Pose, which works on the Navel Chakra, sometime after that. This helps to sequentially increase the vibration of the energy higher and higher.4. Yoga Breathing Guidelines:For most exercises and postures a corresponding breath is indicated. In most cases, there are several options available that allow you to breathe at a level which is comfortable for you. So advanced practitioners might do Breath of Fire, while a beginner might do Long Deep Breathing with a particular pose. One rule with yoga breathing though, is that generally you should inhale when expanding the chest and abdominal region and exhale during the movement which contracts these regions. This allows for maximum benefit from the movements and exercises.5. Rest Periods:It is wise to design specific rest periods within a set. The one important aspect though of rest, which should be included in every Kundalini Yoga kriya, is a period of relaxation at the end of the kriya. This relaxation time is critical to allow the body to assimilate all the energy that has been awakened by the yoga exercises. It is during this time, the body heals, grows and nourishes itself.6. Warm-Ups:If your set consists mostly of difficult yoga poses and exercises only, make sure you do a warm-up set first before jumping into advanced postures. If you plan to do your set only, then ensure that it first starts off with simple yoga postures and movements, so that you are properly warmed up, then moves on to the more challenging exercises. Warm-ups and not overdoing it are your best defenses against injury.Summary of Making Your Own Yoga Sets:The sciences of Yoga, Meditation, Ayurveda, etc, are tools to help you in your own unique path to spiritual awakening. Designing your own Yoga Sets, to help you overcome your personal challenges, I think is a valuable skill to learn. I hope the guidelines above help you maximize the benefits from your personal yoga practice.Anmol Mehta is a Yoga & Zen expert. Hi Anmol,
I have a question-
Have you mastered Technique of opening a third eye Chakra?
What are the advantages ?
I am able to do the most of Yoga Aasanas but lacks continuity. Being able to do Aasanas is definitely plus for opening Chakra, but why could I not open it myself when I was doing that regularly?
thanks

Hi Sunil,
Consistent practice is very important and the more you are able to open the third eye the more you will find your intuition guiding you in the right direction. The key is learning to listen carefully to your inner voice.
Best,
Trupti
