Do Yoga for a Happy Life

Yoga and Brain Studies

Scientists today are saying what yogis have been proclaiming for many thousands of years, if you want to be happy, then do yoga.  The confirmation of this wonderful benefit of doing yoga comes from recent research being done at the School of Medicine at Boston University.

Brain researchers there measured the amount of GABA (gamma-aminobutyric) levels in the brain of participants doing yoga 3 times a week for 1 hour, versus levels in participants doing other equivalent exercises for the same amount of time.  The study ran for 12 weeks and concluded elevated and rising levels of GABA in those doing yoga as compared to the other group.  So what does that mean?

Bhagavat Gita Translation and Summaries

Sri Krishna Teachings

The Bhagavad Gita are the essential teachings of Sri Krishna.  These teachings were imparted by Krishna to the warrior prince Arjuna on the battlefield, when Arjuna’s resolve was shaken upon seeing his teachers, relatives, friends and other loved ones in the opposing army.  This entire epic story is called the Mahabharata and although the story is filled with a great deal of wisdom and life lessons, the most important teachings are from this dialogue between Krishna and Arjuna, which are captured in the Bhagavad Gita.

Exercises for Nerve Strength

Real fitness, as per Yoga, is not just physical strength and endurance, but is actually nerve strength and pranic (life-force/chi) capacity.  In other words, how strong your nervous system is, how much current (Kundalini) can it handle and how well it holds up under stress, is how yoga measures your level of fitness and conditioning.

So for the month of September, let us develop this key aspect of our being, so we can proclaim ourselves to be yoga fit.  To do this, you will find below an excellent hatha yoga pose known to help develop nerve strength and an excellent yoga breathing exercise to expand your pranic capacity and build your entire nervous system.

Morning Yoga Stretches

Surya Namaskar Yoga Illustrations

Morning is undoubtedly one the best times to practice yoga and the perfect morning yoga set is Surya Namaskar or Sun Salutation, as it incorporates some excellent poses to help stretch the entire body.  Surya Namaskar should probably have been the very first article on this blog, instead of now four years later, but hey, better late than never .

Surya Namaskar is a set where you flow from one yoga posture to another.  This style is called Vinyasa or Flow Yoga and it is a wonderful way to practice yoga.  Flowing gracefully from pose to pose, when done with full awareness and attention, allows you to extract the calming and harmonizing aspects of yoga, in addition to it’s well known physical benefits.
