Meditation Good for Mind and Brain

Interested in improving your memory?  Want to have a more robust mind and sharper thinking process.  Forget the mind for a moment, want to be more compassionate and have greater empathy?  Want to have all of the improvements above and more?  If so, the answer is one simple word – Meditate.  And it is not just me who is saying so, it is also the research scientists at Harvard Medical School who are saying it (Mindfulness Meditation Increases Density of Brain).

The mountain of evidence supporting the incredible benefits of meditation is now massive.  There is no question now that meditation is extremely good for your overall health and also for your brain health.  Here are some of the specifics from this most recent research regarding how meditation is improving those areas of the brain associated with memory, thinking and anxiety.

Meditation Good for Mind and Brain

The research studied the affects of meditation on the brain using MRI scans, and compared the affects of 30 minutes of daily meditation done for 8 weeks, with a control group that did not meditate.  Here are the key findings of this study…

  • The areas of the brain responsible for LEARNING and MEMORY showed a greater thickness in the meditators group.  The MRI scans showed a significant increase in the gray matter of this all important brain region.
  • The areas of the brain responsible for ANXIETY showed a reduction of gray matter.  So not only are you improving your memory and thinking, but at the same time you are improving your response to stress.  And we all know how damaging stress can be to your health and lives.

This is just the most recent study on the positive affects of meditation on brain health and overall well being.  There has been a lot of other research done as well and all of it has proved that meditation is great for increasing empathy, handling stress, thinking better, concentrating more and being healthier.  Here are some articles that summarize all these benefits and research for you:  Top 10 Benefits of Meditation, Brain Health Benefits of Meditation, Health Benefits of Meditation and 10 Benefits of Meditation for Students and Young People.

How to Improves the Mind and Memory with Meditation

The specific meditation used in this study was Mindfulness Meditation, but similar results have also been shown with other kinds of meditation, such as Mantra Meditation or Concentration Meditation.  So try any of these techniques and see which one works best for you personality.

If there are any research scientists reading this article, I would suggest comparing the affects of various types of meditations to each other as well, to determine which one is having the greatest affect on the brain.  Specifically, I would be most interest in the comparison between the following 3 meditations.  Zen Meditation or Mindfulness Meditation, Mantra Meditation and the Silent Mind Meditation Technique (which focuses on watching and comprehending your thoughts).

I practice a combination of Mindfulness Meditation and Silent Mind Meditation and I can tell you from personal experience, I have seen incredible improvement in the sharpness of my mind, my awareness and my thinking process from the Silent Mind Meditation Technique.  The best way to put it is that such meditation makes your brain simply excellent.  You will find details of this meditation in the following articles Advanced Gyan Yoga Meditation and Silent Mind Meditation Technique.
