What is 10 Bodies of Light Yoga Numerology:

The 10 Bodies of Light Yoga Numerology is a fantastic tool for gaining deep insight into your life and soul.  It is an ancient mathematical science which uses your birth date to compute various aspects of your being, based on the 10 Bodies of Light model.  These insights then point out exactly what you need to do in order to maximize your success and potential in life.  The science is so powerful that an intuitive and proficient teacher, once having done the numerological analysis, will often know more about the student than the student themselves!

Today quantum physics and other advanced mathematical systems are shedding more light into the connection between numbers and the subtle, spiritual universe.   This connection and vibratory value of numbers was known long ago to the yogis and saints of ancient India.   The 10 Bodies of Light Yoga Numerology can be considered this bridge between mathematics and the multi-dimensional, spiritual being.

Numerology Answers Questions Like Below:

Simple Yoga for Digestion, Gas and IBS

Introduction to Simple Yoga for Digestion

Digestive issues, bloating, indigestion, gas or how about lower back issues, or tight hips… all those issues, including IBS, benefit from doing this one simple yoga exercise.  If you are putting together a yoga sequence for yourself, then Yoga Stomach Grind should not only be included, it should be the amongst the first few exercises you do.

The dynamic nature of this exercise, works to massage all your inner organs, helping to cleanse and rejuvenate them.  In addition, the rotation and stretching works to limber up your lumbar region and spine.  It gets you ready for doing more intense exercises and sets, and in my Teacher’s Training Program, my teach (Ravi Singh), would almost always have us begin with this key exercise.

yoga for digestion and gas

Simple Yoga for Digestion

This simple yoga exercise has been introduced previously for helping you with your back, but I wanted to emphasize the important digestive and elimination benefits of this technique as well.

Yoga Stomach Grind is the first exercise of the excellent Spinal Warm-up Series and you will find details of that set here.

Yoga Stomach Grind is a key yoga exercise for the digestion and back support.  Here on Mastery of Meditation & Yoga, it will be part of the following 2 free online e-books: Free Yoga Videos and Online Kundalini Yoga Exercises.

Below the video I have provided the entire transcript as well, in case you prefer to read the transcript to watching the video.  Choices are always good :-).

Transcript for Simple Yoga for Digestion, Gas and IBS Video:

Namaste, my friends!

Today, we’re going to learn an excellent exercise for your digestive system and for your elimination system.  It massages all your internal organs, pushing out waste and toxins.  If you’re suffering from IBS, gas, bloating, or other digestive elimination issues, this is an exercise that you should definitely include in your wellness routine.

This exercise is also excellent for your lower back if you’re suffering from lower back pain or discomfort, or if you want to prevent lower back pain or discomfort, this is an excellent exercise to do as part of your fitness regimen.

Also, this exercise is very, very good for starting off the yoga session with.  So, in classes I teach, this is an exercise I include as my warm-up for those classes even for my personal practice, this is a staple of my warm-up routine prior to doing any intense yoga sets or kriyas.

How to Do Simple Yoga for Digestion

So, to do this exercise, you’re going to hold on to your knees and you’re going to grind your stomach in a big circle. You’re going to go counter-clockwise first and then, you’re going to go clockwise second. So, all you’re going to do is to grind your stomach in a big circle.  Visualize, drawing a circle with your navel. As you move to the sides, you can use your arms as levers to accentuate the stretch. You should feel a good stretch in your lumbar region, your lower back region, and as you’re arching forward, you should feel a good stretch along the sides of your torso.

You can inhale as you come forward through the nose and as you push back, you can exhale.  The exercise feels very, very good.  It provides a lot of relief to your spine and lower back region and hips.  And then you can go the other way.  You go the other way, switch directions, again inhaling as you come forward and exhaling as you go back. Grinding your stomach in a big circle.

Common Mistakes With Yoga for Digestion

Now, the one mistake I notice people make in the classes is they, they lean forward as they are coming forward.  So, you’re not to lean forward. As you come forward, arch your back forward. Let me show you from the side. From the side, you can tell as I’m coming forward, I’m arching my back forward and I’m arching my back-back. So, what you do not want to do is lean forward like this. That’s not going to do much as far as massaging your organs or stretching out your lower back, right? You want to be able to arch your back forward as you grind in a big circle.

You can do one side for thirty seconds or a minute and then do the other side for a similar duration. Once again, excellent exercise if you’re suffering from IBS, digestive elimination issues, great for your lower back, great for warming up your spine, which is imperative to do before a yoga set, especially a kundalini yoga set.

Yoga Exercise to Burn Calories

Yoga to Lose Fat

There are countless weight loss success stories from those who have taken up a consistent and serious yoga practice. So there is little doubt that yoga is an effective weight loss solution and that yoga helps burn calories and reduce fat. The reason though that yoga is so good for helping you lose weight and keep it off, is not simply because of the physical workout that a yoga practice obviously provides. It is also due to the many other benefits and powers of yoga, such as helping you find positivity, joy, confidence, self-love, peace and emotional balance, while also helping you detox, heal and move towards a more wholesome and healthier way of life.  All this combined really helps with the problem of excess weight and obesity.

These emotional, spiritual and mental benefits though do not mean that yoga cannot give you one mean workout. Ask anyone who has taken a class with my teacher, Ravi Singh, and you will know how rigorous a yoga class can be :-).

There are many excellent yoga routines and targeted exercises which are geared towards helping you burn calories and lose weight.  I have provided many such sets on the website and below you will find a list of them.  Today though I want to detail another such calorie burning yoga exercise for you.

This exercise, called Yoga March, along with being a calorie burner, is also an excellent exercise for starting your yoga practice and getting warmed up.  Often one thinks that stretching is the best way to warm-up, but one should keep in mind that stretching cold muscles and tendons often puts one at risk for strains and tears.  So, although light stretching is ok to do as a start-up, it is better still to warm-up the entire body with some light aerobic exercise before doing vigorous stretching.  Yoga March fits this bill perfectly.

Yoga March will not only get your blood pumping, it will also get your entire system ready for more vigorous yoga, while at the same time getting you started on your calorie burning routine right away.  Below you will find details of how to practice Yoga March along with illustrations, variations, step-by-step instructions, benefits and practice tips.

More Calorie Burning Yoga Sets and Poses:

As mentioned above here are links to other excellent yoga workouts and exercises for burning calories and losing weight.  In addition, you will find links to the Free Online Hatha Yoga Galleries here and the Kundalini Yoga Exercises collection here.  Both these resources have many more yoga poses and exercises which you will find useful in developing your personal yoga practice.

Post Natal Yoga Exercise to Lose Weight

For Yoga and Meditation Certification Course Students:

For students enrolled in the Yoga Teacher’s Training and Meditation Certification Program, I suggest to mix this exercise into your classes as a warm-up from time to time.  There are of course many excellent yoga sets for warming up, but this exercise is as good as any of them.  If you are teaching a targeted weight loss or calorie burning class, then certainly do include this exercise into the routine.  It is an exercise which almost everyone can do and which can be modified according to each student’s fitness level and proficiency.

For those interested in finding out more about these online certification programs you will find information on the Yoga Teacher’s Training Program here and the Meditation Certification Course here.

  • Now begin Breath of Fire Breathing Exercise and being to march in place.  Your head should be straight looking forward and try to bring your knees up high as your march in place.

  • The higher and faster you march the more calories you will expend and the more difficult the exercise will be.  Also doing Breath of Fire in conjunction with the marching will increase the intensity of this exercise.

  • There are many ways to modify this exercise to suit your level.  You can switch to Long Deep Breathing if Breath of Fire is too much.  You can also release your arms and have them move as if you were walking or jogging.  You can also simply walk in place if you get winded and then begin marching once you recover.

B. Duration:

  • Start with 1 Minute and build up from there to 5 minutes or more.

D. Practice Tips for Yoga March:

  • Do interval training in order to develop your fitness and stamina.  This means that you can do 1 minute vigorous marching, followed by 30 seconds walking and then 1 minute high intensity again.  This kind of training is very good for developing your fitness rapidly.
  • Keep in mind that in addition to yoga exercises, yogic breathing is also a proven method for weight loss.  2 good pranayama techniques for weight loss are Kapalbhati and Bhastrika.
  • If you are looking for a combined approach for burning calories, reducing fat and losing weight, you will want to explore the Free Online Weight Loss Program here.
  • Teachers if you are requesting the students do this exercise with their eyes closed, be aware they will end up all over the place, so ensure there are no unwanted collisions :-).

PS: If you enjoy this yoga exercise, please do share it with your friends.  I appreciate your support.

Best Core Yoga Pose Video

Core Yoga Exercise

Yoga for Core Power

A Kundalini Yoga class with my teacher, Ravi Singh, was almost never complete unless we had done our core power yoga exercises.  Over the course of my training I realized the many benefits of developing this center and later, once I began teaching yoga myself, I too ensured to include some abdominal exercises in every class.

The physical and aesthetic benefits of developing your core power and abs is relatively obvious.  You get more energy, develop a flat, toned stomach and having a strong core helps you avoid injuries as well as assists you with other yoga poses.  But there is another more subtle reason for focusing on your core strengthen, especially early in your practice, and that is because working on this area gives you great willpower.  It builds your character.  This inner strength then helps you commit to a steady, long-term yoga and meditation practice, from which then all the other marvelous benefits of yoga are realized.

Core Yoga Pose

The importance of character should not be underestimated in life.  As many of us undoubtedly know, life will constantly challenge us and sometimes knock us down.  From these positions, we have to rise again to meet the challenge of the moment, and for this you will need to have resolve and tenacity.  A strong core, lends itself to having such determination.  So not just does it help you walk the path, but in the event you are dislodged from the path by the storms of life, it helps you get back on it.

From a chakra point of view, working on the core is equivalent to working on your Navel Chakra or Manipura Chakra.  You can read more about the chakra model and understand core power yoga exercises from this point of view by visiting the following articles:

Seven Chakra Kundalini Yoga Model
How to Analyze and Balance Your Chakras

Best Core Yoga Pose:

So now that we know understand the importance of developing our core strength and core power, which yoga exercise should we start with to get that going?  And the answer to that question, from Kundalini Yoga, is Yoga Stretch Pose.  This pose is ideal for beginning to develop your abdominal region and balancing your Navel Chakra.  It works fast, it is simple to do, it has good modifications for beginners and is very effective.

I previously detailed this exercise in the article, Kundalini Yoga Stretch Pose for Yoga Abdominal Power, and you read that article for more details on this excellent yoga pose.

In this article today I will provide a video for Stretch Pose, so if you have neglected to learn this key exercise, here is your chance once again to do so :-).  I assure you, you will not regret incorporating Stretch Pose into your routine and your body will love you for it.

Given how good Stretch Pose, it should be no surprise that it is part of many yoga routines here on Mastery of Meditation and Yoga.  In particular it is the heart and soul of the Yoga Ab Exercises and Workout to Shape Stomach set, which you can use if you are really looking to get your stomach and abs in shape in a hurry.

This video, like the other yoga exercises I am now creating videos for, will become part of our ongoing Free Yoga Exercise Videos series.

Modifications to Stretch Pose:

As I mentioned above, there are some easy modifications for Stretch Pose, and these modifications will work just as well for developing your core as the full version.  They are just ways to simplify the exercise to match your level, so feel free to use them as you develop your capacity.  The most common modifications are to do one leg at a time, or to do the exercise with knees bent.

For Yoga and Meditation Certification Students:

For students enrolled in the Online Yoga Teacher’s Training and Certification Program and Online Meditation Certification Program, this yoga pose is part of both the trainings.  In the Yoga Training Manual it is chapter 24, and in the Meditation Training Manual, it is part of the Basic Yoga Poses Set, which is chapter 19.

As you can see, my teacher ensured we did core yoga work in each class, I have done the same and I suggest you continue the tradition.  The students really appreciate doing these exercises and the benefits to them are enormous.

Core Power Yoga Stretch Pose Video Contents:

  • The video gives a full demonstration of Stretch Pose and it’s modified version as well.
  • It teaches the correct hand positions to help take pressure off the lower back when doing this exercise.
  • It discusses the core and abdominal benefits of this pose, along with other details about the technique.
  • Please note if you have trouble viewing the video from here, I have provided the YouTube link as well which you can use.

Easy Meditation Technique for Total Stress Relief | Shabd Kriya

Simple Meditation Technique

Shabd Kriya – Kundalini Yoga Meditation

It has been some time since we added a core Kundalini Yoga Meditation to our collection and to end that drought, today I will detail for you Shabd Kriya, which is a nice easy meditation technique for helping you relieve stress and relax.  This meditation will join other powerful meditations from Kundalini Yoga such as Sodarshan Chakra Meditation, Infinite Energy and Prosperity Meditation Technique and Tantric Sat Kriya for Transmuting Sexual Energy, that are already part of the website and can be found in the Free Online Kundalini Yoga Meditation E-book.

These meditation techniques were taught to me by Ravi Singh, in my Teacher’s Training Class and were taught to him by Yogi Bajan.  I thank both of them, and the masters before, for passing on this wisdom to us so we can all benefit and grow using it.

Simple Meditation Technique

Easy Meditation Technique – Shabd Kriya Overview

Although Shabd Kriya is quite an easy meditation technique, it does use many powerful aspects of Kundalini Yoga to bestow it’s many benefits.  These mechanisms include, the power of mantras, hand and eye positions (mudras), mind power, naad yoga (yoga of sound), pranayama and more.  In particular, it’s use of pranayama is the main reason for any cautions, for anytime you are going to look to manipulate and control your breathing, you need to make sure you are not over straining or over doing it.

The following 2 documents will give you the necessary guidelines to practice this meditation technique safely and successfully, please do follow them:  Beginner’s Guide to Yoga Practice and Guidelines for Kundalini Yoga Practice.

DIRECT YOUTUBE LINK –> MEDITATION FOR STRESS RELIEF

Benefits of Shabd Kriya – Easy Mediation Technique:

  1. Excellent meditation for stress relief and relaxation.
  2. Helps the body rejuvenate and regenerate.
  3. Helps build mental focus and concentration.
  4. Excellent meditation to promote sound sleep, especially if done before going to bed.  This meditation is often a part of sets designed to help you fight insomnia and restless sleep.

Design of Shabd Meditation Technique:

  • This meditation utilizes 2 fundamental mantras from Kundalini Yoga.  It uses the Sa Ta Na Ma Mantra and the Wahey Guru Mantra.  Sa Ta Na Ma meaning Existence, Life, Death and Rebirth and Wahey Guru meaning, Ecstasy Beyond Words.  You will find a nice Wahey Guru Hymm to help you with the pronunciation in the following free MP3.

Wahey Guru Serenity Hymm Free MP3 Download

  • This meditation also uses a variation of Cosmic Mudra, which is explained in the “How To Do” section below.
  • Finally, Shabd Kriya uses Nasikagra Drishti (nose tip gazing) and Pranayama as well, as explained below.

How to Do Shabd Kriya – Easy Meditation Technique:

  • Sit in any cross legged posture.  You can also do this meditation sitting on a chair.
  • Elongate your spine and tuck your chin in slightly (like a soldier at attention).
  • Place your hands in Cosmic Mudra with your Left Hand Underneath and Right Hand on Top.  The Thumb Tips should be meeting, but the only difference is that they should be a little more forward than up.  You will find an illustration of traditional Cosmic Mudra in the following article, just modify it slightly as I have mentioned above.

    How to Meditate

  • Have your eyes 1/10th open looking down at the tip of your nose.  Only hold this eye position for as long as is comfortable.  Release it whenever necessary and continue with the meditation, reapplying it once ready.
  • Now begin the following Breath/Mantra Cycle.  Inhale in 4 equal parts.  By the fourth inhalation your lungs should be full.  As you inhale chant SA TA NA MA mentally.  So you inhale to a total count of 4.  In total, one chant of SA TA NA MA during one inhalation broken up into 4 parts. Next, hold your breath in and chant SA TA NA MA 4 times slowly mentally.  So you hold your breath in and use the 4 cycles of SA TA NA MA to complete a count of 16 Finally, exhale in 2 parts, which chanting Wahey Guru mentally.  So you exhale to a count of 2.

  • All counting should be slow.  All chanting should be mental and the breathing cycle should be 4/16/2.  4 counts to inhale, 16 count breath retention and 2 count exhalation.  Please note if holding the breath in for 16 counts is too much, cut it down to 8 and build up slowly.  Do not over strain.  With all breath retention progress should be gentle and systematic.
  • Continue the above mantra/breathing pattern for the duration of the meditation, which should be typically 11 minutes and built up to 31 minutes over time.  If you are just starting out even 3 minutes is fine.

Summary of Simple Meditation Technique – Shabd Kriya:

This meditation is very good for inducing deep relaxation and helps the entire body de-stress and de- compress.  Thus, it is great for doing before sleep and to fight insomnia.  For more free easy meditations and yoga sets be sure to check out the Free Online Guided Meditation Techniques E-book and the Free Illustrated Kundalini Yoga Kriyas E-Book as well.

Serenity Prayer – Free MP3 Download of the Beautiful Wahey Guru Hymm

Prayer for Tranquility

Serenity Hymm Free MP3 Download

At the completion of my Kundalini Yoga teacher’s training program, my teacher Ravi Singh held a yoga camp which I attended with my wife.  The entire camp was great, but one evening stood out more than others.  The camp was held in a peaceful resort tucked away in the hills of upstate New York, and one lovely, quiet evening a few of us gathered around a campfire to enjoy some music and hymms.

My wife volunteered to sing a serenity prayer, and a fellow yogi provided the music using a one string instrument (Ektara).  She sang for us all the Wahey Guru hymm, and the atmosphere it created was marvelously tranquil, prayerful and joyful.  This prayer uses the Wahey Guru mantra, which essentially means Ecstasy Beyond Words, and it is a key mantra in Kundalini Yoga and the Sikh faith.

Serenity Prayer

That was not the only occasion where this Wahey Guru prayer created a stir.  On another occasion, we were visiting the wonderful Ananada Ashram, also in upstate New York, and during the evening kritan (prayer singing), Trupti again recited this hymm and just like before, it captivated all the listeners and created an environment full of calmness, peace and love.  So I have got her to sing this wonderful hymm for you all as well, so that you too can enjoy the feelings of peace and tranquility this prayer creates.  Below you will find the link to download the MP3 for this prayer for free.

Also, there are several meditations on Mastery of Meditation and Yoga, which use the WaheyGuru (aka Wahay Guru, Wa Hey Guru) mantra, and this MP3 will also give you the right pronunciation for this important mantra.  The meditations that use this mantra are the most popular Sodarshan Chakra Kriya, explained in the article 3 Most Powerful Pranayamas and Kriyas as well as the Doei Ashtopad Japa, detailed in the article Kundalini Yoga Meditation for Healing and Psychic Powers

Please download the prayer to your computer and then enjoy.  To download the MP3, RIGHT click the link below choose “Save Link As…” or “Save Target As…” depending on your browser, and it save it to your computer.

Again as a reminder, the Free Online Mantra MP3 and Videos Multimedia e-book is in the works and should be uploaded next week, so be on the lookout for that.  As part of that project, many important and powerful mantras, such as the Asto Ma Sat Gamaya, Shanti Mantra, Adi Mantra, SAT NAM mantra, etc, will be coming online as well.

Kundalini Yoga Meditations Design:

Kundalini Yoga Meditations can work relatively quickly because they combine many different components to maximize their effectiveness.  These various components include the following:

  • Mudras:  Hand, eye and body positions to create certain subtle energy circuits in the body.
  • Mantras: Words of power which create certain states of consciousness and activate various regions of the body.
  • Pranayama:  Yogic breathing techniques which allow you to control and use the life-force for spiritual and personal growth.
  • Naad yoga:  The science of sound vibrations and rhythm.
  • Concentration and Visualization:  Using mental focus to develop the mind and access higher levels of consciousness.
  • Movements:  Unlike many traditional meditation, Kundalini Yoga meditations also sometimes use movements to awaken and generate energy flows.
  • Chakra Activation:  Kundalini Yoga is based on the Seven Chakra Model and the meditations are often designed around this system, using it’s wisdom in it’s design.

Supreme Yogic Breath for Brain Development & Mind Control

Kundalini Yoga’s 1 Minute Breath

Yoga Breathing Technique for Brain Health & Brain Fitness

1 Minute Yogic Breath

The mind and breath are intimately related.  In fact, one of the best and most effective ways to silence the mind, is by slowing down the breath, and the reverse is true as well, if your mind is calm and serene, your breath too will be slow and fine.  Kundalini Yoga’s 1 minute yogic breath is one of the most powerful techniques for creating this silencing affect on the brain, but like all powerful yoga pranayamas, this technique also demands that you approach it with respect and intelligence.

This pranayama takes some time to master.  It is difficult and since it involves one of the more advanced aspects of yogic breathing, breath retention, it is prudent to develop this technique slowly and build up one’s capacity steadily over time.  Once mastered though, for brain development and mind control, this pranayama is one of the best.  If you are new to yoga practice, I suggest incorporating this technique into your practice so that you can start to develop your expertise in it and therefore enjoy it’s great rewards in due course.

Supreme Yogic Breath for Brain

1 Minute Yogic Breath comes from the powerful school of Kundalini Yoga.  It was taught to me by Ravi Singh, who learned it from Yogi Bhajan.  On Mastery of Meditation & Yoga, this breathing technique will be chapter 11 on our ongoing Free Online Yoga Breathing Exercises E-book.

Below are the bountiful benefits of this breathing technique, followed by step-by-step instructions on how to practice this pranayama.

Benefits of 1 Minute Yogic Breath:

  • Gives one tremendous inner peace and tranquility.
  • Helps rejuvenate the brain.
  • Help one control the mind and thoughts.
  • Helps you conquer fear and become courageous.
  • Keeps the brain healthy.
  • Calms the entire nervous system and helps dissolve stress.
  • Excellent for inducing meditative states of consciousness.
  • Develops willpower.
  • Builds respiratory capacity.
  • Expands and builds the pranic body (energetic body).

Cautions for 1 Minute Yogic Breath:

As the name implies the 1 minute yogic breath, is a single breath cycle done over the course of 1 minute: 20 seconds to inhale, 20 seconds hold breath in and 20 seconds to exhale.  This is, as I mentioned above, not easy to do initially and as it involves breath retention, it should be approached cautiously and slowly.  The pranayama should not be done using strain.  You should start with only 5 seconds for each phase and build up gently from there.

From 5 seconds, work your way up to 10 seconds and then from there to 15 and finally to 20 seconds per phase.

Instructions for 1 Minute Yogic Breath:

This breath is not complicated at all, but yet it is immensely powerful.

  • Sit in any comfortable posture and close your eyes.  You may also lie down, but sitting is better.
  • Take five long, deep, slow breaths to help relax you.
  • Now start the pattern of inhaling slowly, holding breath in and exhaling slowly.  As mentioned in the caution above, start with 5 seconds per phase and build up gently from there.  Only when you are ready, should you be doing 20 seconds per phase.
  • You may practice this pranayama from 1 minute all the way up to 31 minutes in a single sitting.

1 Minute Yogic Breath Tips:

Alternate Technique for Improving Capacity:

You may find over time that you are able to do the 20-20-20 cycle, but only for a few breaths.  If that is the case, do a few such 1 minute cycles and then take a break by doing simple long, deep breathing and then return to the 1 minute breath.

Using 1 Minute Breath to Test Pranic Body:

I use 1 minute breath to test my pranic capacity from time to time.  So even if I have not been doing this technique, I will sprinkle in 1 minute breath to see what my pranic status is.  You will be surprised to find that even though you may not be explicitly doing this technique, a good yoga and pranayama practice builds and keeps your pranic (energetic) body in tip top shape, which will be verified by being able to do 1 minute yogic breath.

1 Minute Breath for Meditators:

If you are practicing Jyana yoga, awareness meditation, insight meditation, silent mind meditation, zazen or zen meditation, vipassana, etc., you will know the importance of spontaneous breath suspension.  1 minute yogic breath can be very helpful to you if you do practice such meditation techniques, as it assists in this suspension, which translates to greater gaps between thoughts and thus more access to one’s silent nature within.

I hope you enjoy this wonderful pranayama and I hope it helps you awaken to your true Self – Sat Nam.

Advanced Kundalini Yoga Technique to Awaken Kundalini

Advanced Kundalini Yoga Technique

Kundalini Awakening Technique

An important aspect of dealing with Kundalini Shakti (energy) is to concentrate your efforts on the purification and strengthening of your systems and nadis (energy channels), and not prematurely use direct methods to awaken Kundalini.  For those of you who are unfamiliar with Kundalini Shakti and Kundalini Yoga, you may want to first read the following 2 articles: Introduction to the Science of Kundalini Yoga & Kundalini Yoga’s Seven Chakra System Overview.

Having said the above, there are techniques, of course, that allow you to stir and awaken Kundalini directly, and rise up from the state of pure potentiality in which she resides at the base of the spine.  In this article I will present such a technique, but it should not be used in isolation.  It is though a valuable technique to learn and employ as part of a complete Kundalini Yoga practice.  Especially if your practice has matured to a certain degree, and you have developed a strong body and nervous system as a result of it.

Advanced Kundalini Yoga

It has been some time since I acknowledged on the website the sources of my Kundalini Yoga knowledge, so before I proceed I would like to mention that these techniques were taught to me by Ravi Singh, who was a student of Yogi Bhajan.  My deepest gratitude to both of them for sharing this priceless wisdom with all of us.

This particular exercise will be part of the following 3 free e-books here on Mastery of Meditation, as it is a Kundalini Yoga exercise, a type of meditation, as well as a yoga breathing technique: Online Kundalini Yoga Exercises, Free Yoga Breathing Exercises E-book & Free Online Guided Meditation Techniques E-book.

This kundalini yoga technique is actually a form of advanced pranayama (yogic science of breath control), and to perform it successfully, requires an understanding of prana (life-force) and how it functions within your body.

Within the energetic body (aka: psychic body/astral body/pranamaya kosha), 5 distinct types of prana are at work; prana, apana, samana, udana and vyana.  Of these 5 types, the 2 most important are prana and apana.  Please note that by prana here (and going forward) I am referring to the subtype and not the overall life force, which is also called prana.

Prana works in the region from the neck down to the diaphragm and is an upward moving force, while apana works form the navel down and is a downward moving force.  This pranayama is designed to reverse the direction of apana and move it upwards to the level of the solar plexus, while at the same time move prana down, such that they both mix in the stomach region.  This mixing then creates the spark which ignites kundalini and causes her to awaken and rise up the shushumna (central psychic channel).

More specifically, those familiar with the chakra system, will note that we are moving apana into the region of the manipura chakra, which is governed by fire.  This elongates the flame, so to speak, which is then stoked by the now downward moving prana.  Creating the necessary heat to awaken kundalini.

Advanced Yoga Technique to Awaken Kundalini:

a. Instructions for practicing Yoga Technique to Awaken Kundalini:

  • Sit in any comfortable cross legged posture.  You can sit on a chair if necessary.  Keep your back and spine straight, and chin pulled back and tucked in slightly like a soldier at attention (variation of Jalandhara Bandha or neck lock)
  • As illustrated above, raise your arms up to shoulder level.  Bend the elbows up at 90 degrees and then have the palms facing backwards, again making a ninety degree angle with your wrists.  The fingers are all extended.
  • Inhale deeply and hold your breath in (Antar Kumbhaka).  Keep the breath held in and relax your stomach.  Now visualize prana vayu (wind) moving downward towards the solar plexus, while apana vayu moving up towards the solar plexus.  Visualize them mixing in that region, while keeping your breath held in during this time.  Do not over strain, and release your breath when required.
  • After exhaling, inhale again and repeat the visualization.  Continue this process for 3 rounds.  Each round being one breath cycle (inhale – hold – visualize – exhale).
  • After you complete your last cycle.  Inhale, then exhale completely and with your breath held out apply root lock (mulabandha) for as long as you can.  Root lock is the pulling up and in of the rectum, sex organ and lower abdominal muscles all at the same time.

b. Duration for Yoga Technique to Awaken Kundalini:

  • Start with 3 rounds and build up from there.  You can build upto 11 rounds or more.

c. Benefits of Yoga Technique to Awaken Kundalini:

  • Creates the energy necessary to stimulate and awaken Kundalini Shakti.  Leading her to rise up the shushumna.
  • Develops your lung capacity and respiratory systems.
  • Strengthens and opens up your shoulders and arms.
  • Builds willpower and concentration.

d. Practice Tips for Yoga Technique to Awaken Kundalini:

  • This meditation technique requires you to be familiar with the prana and apana vayus.  Attending to your inhalation can help you understand prana vayu and attending to the bodily forces that push downwards (excretion, etc) can help familiarize you with apana vayu.
  • You can also adopt the practice of the following variation of Mula Bandha, where you only contact and release the rectum muscle.  In this case you are learning to turn apana vayu upwards and gain familiarity with it.  You can practice applying and releasing mula bandha at any time during your sadhana or otherwise.
  • You can practice with your hands down as well initially to develop other aspects of this meditative technique.
