Welcome to the Free Online Yoga Videos collection.  This page will index all the free yoga videos that are available on the Mastery of Meditation website.  These videos will be comprised of Kundalini Yoga kriyas that can be found in the Free Online Kundalini Yoga Kriyas E-book and there will also be videos of Hatha Yoga sets, which will use poses from the Free Online Hatha Yoga Poses Galleries.

Of course, these videos will go on to add an important multi-media component to the Free Online Meditation and Yoga Classes, that are offered on this website as well.  The other video libraries that are already online and extensively used by these online classes are the Guided Meditation Video Library and the Yoga Breathing Exercises (Pranayama) Video Library.

The article Chakra Balancing Yoga Breathing Exercise is the second pranayama in the Free Online Breathing Exercises (Yoga Pranayama) E-Book.  That article gives a great deal of detail on this pranayama, so here I will just give a high level overview of it to introduce this video.

Chakra Balancing Yoga Pranayama is more commonly known as Anuloma Viloma Pranayama or Alternate Nostril Breathing.  This is a fundamental yoga breathing technique, which is an important aspect of all the various schools of yoga.  It’s origins are in the Yoga Sutras of Patanjali and it is a key part of Kundalini Yoga and Hatha Yoga practice.

I am delighted to announce the beginning of free online yoga video instruction and demonstrations on Mastery of Meditation.  The first yoga video was the AUM Mantra Meditation Video for Kundalini Yoga Class and now when I think back on it, I am glad it all began with the primordial, sacred sound – The AUM (OM) Mantra :-). Now though, I am launching specially designed yoga videos to help you learn and master this profound science.

There will be several yoga video libraries in time, but the first video series is going to be the videos of yoga breathing exercises or pranayamas.  Pranayamas use the science of breath control, in order to expand, purify and optimize your entire being.  These breathing exercises work on your many levels and dimensions, and help you reach your highest potential by exploiting the power of prana (chi/life-force).

Welcome to the Online Yoga  Pranayama E-Book.  Pranayamas are breathing exercises for expanding, purifying and optimizing your entire mind-body-spirit complex.  It is the science of breath control.

Background of 4 Part Deep Breathing Exercise:

This is the yoga breathing technique that my Kundalini Yoga teacher, Ravi Singh, almost always started our classes with.  This is because despite being a simple breathing exercise, its ability to open up and get one’s energy going is astonishing. 

In addition to awakening one’s energy, this particular yoga pranayama also has other significant benefits which I will detail below.  Whether you are new to Yogic breathing techniques or an expert, this particular breath control exercise should be a permanent member in your goodie bag, which you can pull out anytime you need to fire up and vitalize your pranic body (energetic body).

Deep Breathing Exercise

Benefits of Yogic 4 Part Deep Breathing Exercise:

Primary:

  • Rapidly oxygenates your blood, thus helping the body heal, detoxify and remove waste more effectively.
  • Increases the amount of Prana (life-force) you are bringing into your system.
  • Improves the elasticity of the lungs and increases respiratory capacity.
  • Activates the energy flows in your body.

Cautions for Practicing Yogic 4 Part Deep Breathing Exercise:

  • If you feel dizzy when practicing this breathing technique, you should stop and substitute normal breathing.  If you suffer from vertigo, you should use caution in practicing this breathing exercise.
  • You should be careful practicing this pranayama if you have high blood pressure, heart disease or suffer from stroke or epilepsy.

Step-by-step Instructions for Yogic 4 Part Deep Breathing Exercise:

  • To practice this breathing exercise sit up in a comfortable position.
  • Elongate your spine upwards, lengthen your neck and subtly bring your chin back and in like a soldier at attention.  This will align the spine with the back of your head.
  • Close your eyes.
  • Bring the palms of your hands together at sternum level (like when you pray), but have them 2-4 inches away from your chest.  Your elbows should be up such that your forearms are parallel to the ground.
  • Press the palms of your hands together applying equal pressure to both sides.  The pressure should be firm but not excessive.
  • Relax your diaphragm and stomach muscles.
  • Now inhale in 4 sniffs and exhale in 4 sniffs.  So you are breaking up 1 inhalation into 4 equal parts and breaking up 1 exhalation into 4 equal parts.  By the fourth sniff, during the inhalation, you should have completed filled your lungs with air and by the fourth sniff, during the exhalation, you should have completely expelled all the air.  Completely inhaling and exhaling by the last sniff is a key part of this breathing technique.  That’s it, continue for 1-5 minutes.

Secret of Yogic 4 Part Deep Breathing Exercise:

The real benefit of this yoga pranayama is hidden in benefit number three listed above (increases lung capacity).  According to Yoga, your evolution can be triggered simply by the capacity of your respiratory system.  When it reaches a critical threshold relative to your size, you evolve.  By partitioning the breath, this particular breathing technique forces you to maximize the use of your lungs.  Thus, helping them expand and absorb more prana (life-force) from the air. 

Generally, in everyday life we don’t use our full lung capacity and over time this capacity diminishes.  So take a bold step towards your spiritual growth and include the Yogic 4 Part Deep Breathing Exercise into your daily yoga practice.  It is a great way to start and will go a long way in helping you finish.

Today’s Yoga Class in Manalapan:

In the class today we practiced some excellent breathing exercises, yoga stretches and Zen Meditation.  We began the class with tuning into the present moment, after which we did segmented breathing to charge up our energy centers.  We then used this energy to work on warming up the back and spine.

After doing the spinal warmups we worked on particular stretches which facilitate sitting for long periods in meditation.  We followed up these stretches with doing some work on our core and abs.

Then, to prepare the mind for meditation, we did one of my favorite pranayama combos which helps settles the mind down and integrate all your senses.

Finally, we practiced Zen Meditation (Breath Awareness / Zazen) together.  For the more advanced practitioners we did a variation of Zen Meditation which included drift analysis and thought perception.

Benefits of Yoga and Meditation Class:

The benefits of today’s class are wide and varied.  The exercises and meditation we did will not just promote good health and wellbeing, but will also help you discover spontaneous joy, peace and love.  This type of practice is also ideal for stress reduction and bestowing deep relaxation.

In the article Elbow Platform – Tough Power Yoga Pose, I detailed for you this unusual yoga pose, which is great for those looking to enhance their power yoga routines.  Today I will present to you a free online video of this great exercise, which should give you a clear picture and demonstration of how to practice this pose.

Although this pose comes from the school of Kundalini Yoga, I also place elbow platform in the category of power yoga exercises as it is very strength oriented and requires a great deal of energy and vigor to do.  It is not a pose suitable for beginners and some caution should be exhibited when doing this posture.  In particular, if you have lower back issues or weak hamstrings you should be particularly careful in doing this pose.  Also, like most other power yoga exercises and routines, it is good to warm-up prior to trying this exercise.

In the video below I have demonstrated an advanced version of this yoga pose, and needless to say you should be fairly advanced and strong before trying that variation.

For Yoga and Meditation Certification Students and Teachers:

To fellow yoga teachers, as I have mentioned above, this is an advanced pose so be sure you select the right class to teach it in.  The best way to modify the pose is to allow the students the luxury to rest whenever they need to and come back into the pose once they are ready.  Also, remember that Breath of Fire is excellent to do with this pose and a natural fit for it.

This pose is useful to both Yoga Teacher’s Training and Certification Program and Meditation Certification Program students, and feel free to teach it to your students as you find suitable.
