How To Get The Most Out Of Guided Meditation

In this post you’ll learn how to get the most possible out of your guided meditation practice.

I was first introduced to deep relaxation in middle school. Toward the end of the physical education classes, the teacher sometimes asked us to lie down on the floor. Then, she played a guided meditation.

It was a sweeping meditation and the instructions took us on a journey through the body. Each body part was given attention and we were reminded to relax the body and mind. We were also asked to give attention to the sensation of the body pressing against the floor.

I think almost all the students enjoyed the meditation sessions, it was so relaxing to lie down and mediate after the exercise.

Types Of Guided Meditations

Guided meditation is really easy to learn. It’s almost like having a private teacher. All you have to do is follow the voice instructions.

There are many kinds of guided meditations. The sweeping technique where you go from body part to body part is very popular. And it’s both relaxing and healing.

Tips for Guided Meditation

Normally, we avoid unpleasant sensations, but when you give attention to the body you’re bound to experience both pleasant and unpleasant sensations. I encourage you to embrace whatever comes up…

Other forms of guided meditation include chakra meditation, where you meditate on the main energy centers along the spine. There are also visualizations and techniques where you focus on the breath, called breathing meditation.

Guided Meditation Tips

One of the keys to succeeding with guided meditation is to remove as many distractions as possible. Let’s take a look at a handful of approaches.

Whenever you get distracted, you start to think and momentarily forget about the meditation all together. Your own thoughts or background noise may even make you frustrated or angry.

Be forgiving and patient with yourself. Try to accept every moment as it is.

It’s easy to see that distractions are a major obstacle to inner peace.  Moreover, voices are one of the most challenging distractions, since it’s difficult not to listen in on conversations.

So, opt to meditate in a quiet room and close the door. Yet, make sure there is sufficient air circulation wherever you practice.  Dimming the lights creates a calming ambiance.

Also make sure your body is comfortable. There is no need to meditate on the floor. A stool or chair is just as good.

Lying down on your back is an excellent way to relax your body and mind.  When the body is relaxed, the mind is naturally at ease. Regardless of your body posture, make sure you’re as comfortable as possible.

Another way to minimize distractions is by using headphones. That way, external sound is blocked from entering your ears while you meditate.

It’s very important not to try too hard. Just relax your body and mind.  All you have to do is give relaxed attention to the meditation. Trying too hard only causes physical and mental tension.

Keep in mind that meditating with closed eyes reduces distractions and makes it easier to concentrate.

For best results, meditate for about 10-15 minutes each time. The more sessions you do, the deeper the meditation takes you. Take the opportunity to stretch your legs between rounds.

It’s also true that the more you practice, the more you benefit from your meditation practice.

Guided Weight Loss Visualization Meditation w/ 3 Step Rhythmic Breathing Technique:

  • Set your alarm or other time device for 3 to 11 minutes.  You may wish to start with 3 and then build up to 11.
  • Lie on your back comfortably, close your eyes and begin 3 Step Rhythmic Breathing (3srb) as follows. 
  • 3 Step Rhythmic Breathing (3srb):  Without changing the quantity of air you normally take in, start to breathe in and out to the following rhythm.  3 seconds for the inhalation and 2 seconds for the exhalation.  So 5 seconds per complete breath.  This will mean you are breathing at 12 breaths per minute (down from 15-17 you normally do).  In addition, have your chest and abdomen rise and fall together as you inhale and exhale respectively.  3 Step Rhythmic Breathing is an extremely valuable tool for your spiritual advancement.  In this case we are just using it to set the stage for your desires and intentions to manifest, but, just doing it starts to shift your level of awareness and being from the gross to the refined.
  • Spend at least 1-2 minutes just doing 3SRB to establish the rhythm and then move forward.  Your mind and body should now be relaxed and everything should be ripe to receive your intentions.
  • Now while immersed in this beautiful rhythmic breath begin the visualization meditation below. 
  • Without animosity to the fat cells of your body (as they are a part of you), visualize a white light entering from the soles of your feet.  Imagine now this light traveling up your body slowly and as it moves up it is dissolving fat deposits and reshaping those regions.  For areas where you carry excess weight spend more time.  All the time keeping up 3 Step Rhythmic Breathing.
  • Once the light has reached the very top of your head, inhale deeply, hold your breath and visualize your body exactly as you would like it to be.  Make sure when you visualize your body shape you are also sending the message of being not just slim and trim, but, also healthy and fit.
  • You may repeat the visualization meditation a few times if you like.
  • Once you complete your last visualization meditation cycle, try to think of nothing and just remain silently empty, only doing the 3 Step Rhythmic Breathing.

Hints & Tips for Weight Loss Visualization Meditation w/ 3 Step Rhythmic Breathing Technique:

  • When doing the visualization concentrate on the light and its action on the body and allow the 3 Step Rhythmic Breathing to happen by default if possible.
  • At the end really concentrate on doing the 3 Step Rhythmic Breathing and try to just relax as much as possible.  It takes some time to master 3SRB so don’t worry if you can’t do it perfectly right off the bat.
  • A helpful technique to do 3SRB is to count 1, 2, 3 slowly while inhaling and count 5, 6 while exhaling.  We skip “4” to account for the slight pause that takes place between the inhalation and exhalations.  In 3SRB the breaths just follow each other so don’t extend the pause consciously.
  • 3 Step Rhythmic Breathing is a very powerful technique which deserves its own article to fully explain and I will put that together in the near future and link to it here once its ready.

As mentioned above, this meditation technique utilizes breath control (pranayama) as part of its process.  It requires breath suspension after exhalation, which is one of the more difficult aspects of breath control.  Anytime you are going to practice breath suspension, especially after exhalation, you need to move forward gently and intelligently.  So Do Not Strain and build up the time for this meditation systematically.  In doing so you will avoid creating unnecessary problems for yourself and will gracefully gain mastery over this profound meditation technique.

Guided Prosperity Meditation Technique: 

Follow the step by step meditation instructions below to practice this technique.

  • Sit in a comfortable cross legged position.  You may also sit on a chair for this meditation.
  • Set your alarm or other time device for the appropriate time (start with 1 minute and build up to 11 minutes or more).
  • Elongate your spine upwards, lengthen your neck and subtly bring your chin back and in, like a soldier at attention.  This will align the spine with the back of your head.
  • Take 5 deep, slow breaths though the nose.  This will oxygenate your blood and relax you.
  • Place your LEFT hand in Yoga Gyan Mudra (your INDEX finger and Thumb tips are meeting, other 3 fingers are pointing straight)
  • Extend your left arm up at 60 degrees.  Your palm is facing in towards you and the arm should be straight.
  • Place your RIGHT hand in Yoga Surya Mudra (your RING finger and Thumb tips are meeting, other 3 finger are pointing straight)
  • Bend your right arm such that your right elbow is near your lower ribs, on the right side of your body, with your forearm making a small angle at your right elbow joint.  The right palm is also facing in (and will be about face level).
  • Close your eyes.
  • Inhale deeply, then EXHALE completely and hold your breath out.
  • With your breath held out pump your stomach at a moderate pace about 1 pump / second.  Pump your stomach means to pull in your abdominal muscles powerfully towards your spine.
  • With each pump silently THINK the sound HAR.
  • Once your have done as many pumps as you are comfortable doing, inhale deeply, then EXHALE and repeat the cycle again.  Continue for the duration of the meditation.

Hints & Tips for Prosperity Meditation Technique:

  • I repeat, start this meditation slowly and build up your time systematically.
  • When you start to feel stronger and more capable of holding your breath out for extended periods of time, challenge the sense of panic that comes upon you as a result of breath deprivation.  Staying calm through this period of panic will make you fearless.  DO NOT TRY THIS UNTIL YOU THINK YOU ARE READY FOR IT.
  • Try to keep the arms as indicated and don’t give up at the first sign of discomfort.  Again, don’t overdo it early in your practice, but as you progress let the mind and body know that you have the willpower and spirit to overcome their complaints.
  • This meditation is designed to give you a great deal of power, energy and wealth.  It is provided here with the understanding that you agree not to misuse any of these blessings and agree to use them to make progress on your spiritual journey and/or use them to help others in theirs.

As many of you know at Mastery of Meditation I offer Free Online Guided Meditation and Kundalini Yoga Classes.  The first of these classes was launched on May 1, 2007 and I want to specially thank all the students who are currently taking part in that course and paving the way for others.  Since I found the class to be of interest and value to others, I have decided to expand to offering multiple classes and also fine tune them as follows.

Welcome everybody to the  Free Online Introduction to Guided Meditation and Kundalini Yoga ClassAll the material for this class is available via the links on this post and you can start anytime you wish.  The course covers 2 weeks, but you are of course welcome to continue on.  In this post I will provide the class objectives, class details, course syllabus and participation guidelines.  Please read through everything carefully so you will be able to get maximum benefit from the class.   I am glad you all have taken advantage of this opportunity to deepen your spiritual practice and I hope you will make full use of it.  There is, without a doubt, no material equivalent to the rewards that this path bestows.

Class Objectives:

Class Details:

Class Structure: 

Each class/session will consist of 3 sections: Breathing exercises (pranayama), Kundalini Yoga Kriyas (sets) and Guided Meditation Practice.  There are a wide range of students participating, from beginners to experienced yoga practitioners, so the exercises are designed to allow you to pace yourself.  The total time will be 45 minutes / day.  Most important, walk the middle path with regard to each session.  DO NOT OVERDO OR OVER STRAIN and at the same time don’t have it be excessively easy either.

Course Syllabus:

The following describes the 3 sections comprising the 45 minute daily yoga and meditation session for week 1 and week 2.  The approximate total times for each section and set are also given.  Take more rest if you need to, or if you feel comfortable do the poses and exercises a little longer within the alloted time.  Each breathing exercise, Kundalini Yoga Kriya and Guided Meditation technique below is a link to the article with all the details you need.

Following are the guidelines which I suggest we follow…

  • Please post all comments, questions and feedback of a public nature in the comments section of this post.  This way all will benefit from the discussion.  Feel free to ask questions or discuss issues, as that is one of the main reasons for this particular class format.  Of course, you are free to email me as well if you would like the discussion to not be public.
  • If you like, you can indicate with a comment that you have completed your daily session.  Could be as short as “did it”, or of course could be questions, issues or more detailed feedback.  The hardest part with a daily yoga and meditation practice is establishing consistency and regularity and I think having to acknowledge that you completed your daily sadhana (spiritual work) will help in facilitating that.  In addition, your comments could inspire others as well. 
  • I will post all information regarding the class in the comments section below as well, so please check periodically for updates.
  • Before starting your daily yoga and meditation session, take a moment and tune in to your higher self for guidance and protection.  At the end of every session, visualize yourself and the world as you would like it to be.
  • Do the best you can and modify the class as you require.  It is more important to do something, than be overwhelmed or not do anything at all.
