3 Minute Meditations for Fast Relaxation

Fast Meditations

Meditations for Quick Relaxation

Research has shown that in just 3 minutes meditation can help reduce stress and change the inner chemistry of the body to a healthier, more relaxed state.  So all those excuses regarding how busy you are and how little time you have can now be thrown out the window :-).  All you need in order to dissolve physical, emotional and mental tension is just 3 minutes of meditation.

Normally, I always suggest to meditate early in the morning, when the mind is fresh, or before going to sleep, after the day’s hustle and bustle is done, but in this case I suggest doing the 3 minute meditation right in the middle of the day or if you are facing a stressful situation.  This is so  the meditation can help immediately neutralize the harmful stress hormones and put you back in a relaxed, peaceful state of mind.

Meditation

The 2 kinds of meditation I would suggest for this quick fix are below.  Try either one and see which suits you best.  They come from different schools of thought, and use different approaches, but are both pretty handy.

Be sure to check out the rest of the articles in this series below, which are also clever yoga, meditation and pranayama tips and techniques for busy people.

Each title is a link.  Click that title to visit the article for all the details about the technique.

Kundalini Yoga Meditation for Relaxation:

For this meditation.  Sit up straight and bring your hands into namaste pose, keeping a small gap between the thumbs and keep the palms slightly cupped.  Then inhale deeply and blow out gently aiming at the gap between your thumbs, thus allowing the cool air to fill the region between your palms and circulate there.  Keep your eyes 1/10th open looking down during this meditation and keep you mind on your breath and the cool sensation when blowing into your palms.

This meditation is sure to relax you rapidly.  Continue to do it for 3 minutes.  Here is a video demonstration of this technique as well…

Breath Awareness Meditation for Relaxation:

This is probably the most used technique for generating quick relaxation and this was the technique used in the studies which measured the reduction of stress hormones as well.

For this meditation, simply sit up straight, close your eyes and bring your attention to your breathing.  If thoughts arise, just see them as thoughts only and let them go without getting involved, and return your attention to your breath.  Continue this simple method for 3  minutes.  It will greatly calm your mind and relax all your energies.

Here is a video of this technique, including a count, which is very helpful if you plan to do the technique for longer periods.

Deep Relaxation with Yoga Breathing Exercise | Bhramari Pranayama

Deep Relaxation Exercise

Yoga to Relax

The wonderful science of Yoga Breathing Exercises or Pranayamas is really worth learning as it has a wide range of applications, with deep relaxation being just one of these great benefits.  You will find many pranayamas in the Free Online Yoga Breathing Exercises E-book, and in today’s article I want to detail for you another wonderful breathing exercise called Bhramari Pranayama.

This breathing exercise is excellent for promoting deep relaxation and capable of activating the Third Eye Chakra as a bonus, which is the seat of intuition and psychic powers.

Bhramari Pranayama

If your mind is overactive, you are constantly worrying and anxious, your nerves are buzzing, then it is time to turn to this exercise.  This technique will calm your mind down, sooth your nerves and give you a great sense of peace and tranquility within.  Due to these pacifying powers, Bhramari Pranayama is also great to do prior to meditation, to prepare the mind for going deeper.

On the website are many other yoga and meditation techniques to help you relax deeply and I have listed those at the end of this article.  In addition, please note that the De Stress Free Online Program is also now available in the free yoga and meditation program’s section.  So if you want to undertake a comprehensive relaxation program, then this course is for you.

The very fist step in spiritual evolution is to learn to relax and be at ease, so having such relaxation techniques tucked away in your tool box are really very useful.

Below are the step-by-step instructions of how to practice this breathing exercise, along with benefits and other details.

Benefits of Bhramari Breathing Exercise for Deep Relaxation:

  • Helps promote deep relaxation.
  • Helps reduce stress and reduce anxiety.
  • Helps promote sound sleep and fights insomnia.
  • Helps open the Third Eye to bestow intuition and Psychic Powers.
  • Helps reduces anger and irritation.
  • Helps promote peace and tranquility.

Duration for Bhramari Yoga Relaxation Technique:

  • As with all yoga breathing exercises you should start out gently and slowly build up from there.  With Bhramari, you can start with 1-2 minutes and build up to 15 minutes.

Step by step Instructions for Bhramari Yoga Breathing Exercise:

Bhramari means bee, and this pranayama uses the humming sound of a bee to work it’s magic.  I really love this technique.

  • Sit up straight then elongate your spine upwards, lengthen your neck and subtly bring your chin back and in like a soldier at attention.  This will align the spine with the back of your head.
  • Now close your eyes and relax yourself deeply.  Specially relax all the muscles of the face and forehead.
  • Take 5 long deep breaths through the nose to relax and calm you further.
  • Now close the flaps of your ears with your index fingers and bring your awareness to the center of your forehead.  This is the location of the Ajna Chakra or Third Eye.
  • Next inhale deeply and then make a slow humming sound like that of a bee (exhalation will occur naturally as a result of the sound).
  • Keep the sound soft and consistent and feel the vibrations created reverberate in your forehead region.
  • Once you have exhaled completely, inhale again deeply through the nose and repeat the process.  Continue on with the pattern for the duration of the meditation.

Free Downloadable Meditation Music for Relaxation

Free Meditation Music

Relaxation Meditation Music

Meditation music can serve many different purposes, such as relaxation, enjoyment, healing, chakra activation, etc., but really good meditation music is the type that ultimately points you towards Infinity.  In fact, that is the mark of any really great art.  That it reminds you of Infinity and moves you that direction.  It inspires you to reach towards your Highest Nature.

Coming soon on Mastery of Meditation and Yoga is going to be another full section which will be devoted to meditation music.  This section will be a collection of downloadable meditation music MP3s and Videos and will of course be completely free, just like the other e-books, galleries and libraries we host here.  I am quite excited with this new dimension for the website, as I am a huge fan of good meditation music and am greatly inspired by it.

Relaxation Meditation Music

To kick off the Free Meditation Music Downloads section I am going to provide you with a really inspiration track today, which is not just good for relaxation, but is also great for inspiring you to reach for the Divine.  It was created by a great new friend I made this year, who is not just a highly charged spiritual person, but is also a terrific musical talent and artist, Shree Kamesh.  It is this combination, of spiritual orientation combined with musical genius, that allows Kamesh to create music that is profound and deeply moving.

Meditation Music with Mantras:

As one might expect, the science of spiritual and meditative music is quite rich and developed in India and is closely related to yogic thinking and philosophy.  There is music specifically made to activate the Chakras and affect Kundalini (Energy), and there are many tunes that are made just for the practice of yoga, prayer and certain meditations.  Honestly, creating music to simply help you relax is easy, but to create music that touches your soul and affects your vibratory level is something far greater.

You may already be familiar with Mantras (prayers) and the power they posses.  Mantras, of course, can be used for many different purposes, including relaxation, concentration, healing, meditation and more, and you will find the full collection that we host here on the following page: Free Online Mantra MP3 Downloads.  Now what happens when you take the most powerful mantra, the Gayatri Mantra and use the ancient spiritual musical knowledge to create a meditative musical piece?  You get something special, and that is what is being shared with you today for free.  The Gayatri Mantra in a particular Raga (tune) to be used to inspire and move you towards Infinity.  Now that’s what I call meditation music .

Gayatri Meditation Music for Relaxation Benefits:

  • Helps you relax and promotes inner peace and harmony.
  • Inspires you towards greatness and God.
  • Increases your vibratory level.
  • Promotes stress relief and self healing.
  • Activates your energetic centers and subtle energy channels.
  • Inspires you to meditate.

How to Relax Using Gayatri Meditation Music:

Follow the steps below to achieve deep relaxation using this track.

  • The track below is 5 minutes long, but if you would like to use it for deep relaxation I suggest setting it to repeat.
  • Dim the lights in the room.
  • Lie in Corpse Pose (Best Yoga Relaxation Technique), then begin Simple Yogic Breathing.
  • Determine to relax completely and let go of all your worries and anxieties.
  • Start the music and give your awareness to it completely.  Just let go and let the music penetrate you.  If anything comes up just be a Witnessing to it.  Let it come and let it go.
  • Feel the vibratory affect of the music and let the special sounds work their magic on your system.
  • Continue on in this way for as long as you like.

Of course, you can also add this piece to your meditation music playlist and listen to it whenever you like.  It is a great tune to help you feel calm, peaceful, inspired and loving.

Best Relaxation Technique & Stress Relief Exercise

Yogic Relaxation Technique

Relaxation Exercise for Stress Relief

You may have noticed the emphasis I place on doing a period of relaxation after any set of yoga exercises or difficult Kundalini Yoga techniques.  The importance of this relaxation phase should not be underestimated.  During this time, the body and mind get a chance to assimilate the energy and changes that are produced by the yoga exercises, and this opportunity is essential for making the most of the work you have just put in.  There are quite a few relaxation techniques available, but without a doubt the very best relaxation exercise is Yoga Corpse Pose.

Relaxation, of course, has many more benefits that just providing the space for energy assimilation after yoga exercises, and so it is certainly a very valuable skill to own and master for healthy and peaceful living.  To that end, Corpse Pose is great to practice if you are going through a stressful and tense time in your life, are fighting any health issues or if you are simply interested in cultivating a relaxed and peaceful mind and body.

Despite how simple an exercise Corpse Pose might seem and despite thinking that relaxation is a natural state, you will be surprised how difficult this actually can be for people to do.  The habit of endless thinking, worrying, stressing, planning, etc, has become hard to shake in today’s hectic world, thus making the simple and natural state of relaxation hard to access.  Perhaps even enlightenment is easier today to achieve than relaxation .  This is all the more reason that we need to consciously practice relaxation and stress relief, so that we can enjoy the bountiful benefits this blessed state bestows.

Best Relaxation Technique

For successful relaxation, whether it is via the practice of Corpse Pose or some other technique, breath is going to always be a key component.  Breath can be used to not only signal the mind and body that it’s relaxation time, but it can also be used as a mechanism in relaxation visualization techniques to help promote this state.  Furthermore, by the simple use of the breath, stress relief can be achieved anytime, even when lying on your back and playing dead is not quite appropriate .  So in the practice section below, be sure to pay particular attention to this aspect.

In the practice section below you will also find several variation of how to take full advantage of Corpse Pose to not just relax, but also to do conscious stress relief and to set the optimum state for affirmations and visualizations.

Corpse Pose will be included in our ongoing Kundalini Yoga Exercises E-book and it will also be part of our Hatha Yoga Poses E-book, as this essential technique is common to all schools of yoga.  For another excellent relaxation technique you can read the article on the Meditation Technique for Relaxation & Stress Relief.

Benefits of Corpse Pose Relaxation Technique:

  1. Allows surrender to Infinity so it can speak to us.
  2. Allows surrender to the Universe so she can heal and rejuvenate us.
  3. Allows surrender to the body and indicates trust in it’s ability to heal itself.  Creates a highly conducive state for self-healing to take place.
  4. Helps the mind and body deeply relax and promotes stress relief.
  5. Allows the mind and body to assimilate the gains from previously done yoga exercises.
  6. Creates a state optimum for visualization techniques to be implemented thus, helping one manifest one’s desires and intentions.
  7. Allows one to be free from worry and anxiety, thus promoting a peaceful and serene mind and body.
  8. Helps one combat insomnia and sleep peacefuly.

Corpse Pose Relaxation Technique Basic Practice Details:

  • Lie on your back and close your eyes.
  • Have your legs shoulder width apart and allow the feet to fall away naturally.  Have your arms outstretched and along the sides of your body, about 12 inches away.  Have your palms facing up and allow the finger curled naturally.  If necessary use a rolled blanket or small pillow under your knees to take pressure off your lower back.  You can also use a light blanket to stay warm as the body will cool down when relaxed.
  • Now start to take a deep breath, allowing it to fill your abdomen first and then letting the air fill you chest.  Without pausing exhale, allowing the air to empty your chest first and then your abdomen.  Your diaphragm should push down and out, expanding your stomach as you inhale, and then up and it pulling in your stomach as you exhale.  Take 5 such deep long breaths to help melt away tension and stress.
  • After the 5 long deep breaths, simply let go of everything and allow yourself to sink deeper and deeper into the floor and deeper and deeper into nothingness.
  • Let go of all your worries, anxieties, problems, tensions, goals and plans.  Allow the entire body, mind and breath to relax.  Just relax completely and surrender to Infinity.  Allow Infinity to do what is necessary with you.  Feel peaceful and quiet, and with every breath allow yourself to let go even more and relax even more deeply.
  • Continue on for the duration of the relaxation period.  Time is open for this exercise.

Corpse Pose for Conscious Stress Relief & Relaxation:

  • In this variation you can use Corpse Pose to consciously relax and let go of tension in various parts of the body.  To do this follow the steps above up to the point where you have completed the 5 long deep breaths.
  • Now begin to scan your body starting with your feet and move upwards.  For each part of your body, as you inhale, visualize white light entering that part and as you exhale visualize any tension stored in that area leaving your system.  Move up at any pace you like, until you reach the crown of your head.  So consciously relax your feet, shins, knees, thighs, buttocks, hips, stomach, chest, shoulders, arms, forearms, hands, neck, chin, mouth, cheeks, eyes, forehead, head, etc.  See if you can find where you tend to store stress and tension, and then as you develop this familiarity, ensure you spend extra time in that region letting go of the stress.

Corpse Pose for Affirmation and Visualization:

  • In this variation you can use Corpse Pose to set the optimum stage for visualization techniques and affirmations to work.  To do this follow the steps above up to the point where you have completed the 5 long deep breaths.

  • Now begin to breathe in a conscious rhythm where you are doing twelve breath cycles per minute.  Each inhalation and exhalation cycle counts as one breath and you want to be at 12 such breaths a minute.  This will be slower that the 15-17 breaths you currently take per minute and this rhythm sets the stage for communicating with your Higher Self and the Universe.
  • So once you reach 12 breaths per minute, stay there for a few minutes and then begin whichever visualization technique or affirmation you wish to practice.  You will find yourself much more successful with them now.

Hope you enjoy this technique and it helps you get rid of stress, find peace and master the all important art of relaxation.

Background of Relaxation Meditation Technique for Stress Reduction:

This relaxation meditation technique was taught to me by Ravi Singh during my teacher’s training program without much fan fare I recall.  It was presented in one of the 8 hour long Kundalini Yoga classes and I immediately took a liking to it (yes you read that right about the 8 hour long Kundalini Yoga classes during the teacher’s training program! :-).

As far as relaxation meditation techniques go, this one is very simple.  There are no mantras to chant, no imaginary places to visualize and visit, no self hypnosis, no elaborate Yoga Nidra scripts to follow for releasing muscle tension, none on that.  All that is required is a simple Yoga pose and your breath.  Don’t get me wrong here, soothing mantra meditations, peaceful visualizations and conscious body relaxation are very effective meditation techniques for relaxation, anger management and stress management, it’s just that the beauty of this technique, which caught my attention, lies in its simplicity.

Tools for Relaxation Meditation Technique for Stress Reduction:

  • If you are alive and breathing you can practice this meditation.

Benefits of Relaxation Meditation Technique for Stress Reduction:

Primary Benefits:

  • Promotes mental and emotional relaxation, peace and tranquility.
  • Reduces stress.
  • Dissolves anger and irritation.
  • Promotes calmness and harmony.

Secondary Benefits:

  • Improves the respiratory system.
  • Promotes health, wellbeing and longevity.

Cautions for Relaxation Meditation Technique for Stress Reduction:

This meditation technique might turn you into a Saint, please be fore warned :-).

Guided Relaxation Meditation Technique for Stress Reduction:

  • Sit up in any comfortable relaxed position, preferably with the spine straight.
  • Bring your gently hands into prayer pose or Namaste Yoga pose in the following way.  Have your upper arms along and touching the sides of your ribs such that your elbows are near your lower ribs.  Have your palms together (like in prayer) and have them 6-12 inches away from your chest.  Cup your hands slightly so the palms are not touching and allow a small space between your thumbs.  The thumb tips though are touching, it’s just there should be a small gap between your thumbs leading into the space between your slightly cupped palms.
  • Have your eyes 1/10th open looking down.
  • Take 5 long deep breaths through the nose and then move on to the next step.
  • Now breathe in deeply through the nose and breathe out slowly through the mouth aiming your breath at the gap between your thumbs.  As the cool air hits your thumbs and enters the space between your palms you should start to feel tremendous calm and relaxation wash over you.  Anger and stress should simply start to dissolve and you should start to feel mentally and emotionally tranquil and peaceful.  The cool gentle air along with the posture are the keys to the effectiveness of this simple relaxation meditation technique.
  • Continue the meditation by breathing in deeply though the nose and slowly out the mouth into your hands as long as you wish or until all the anger, stress, irritation and/or tension is completely dissolved.

Meditation tips for Relaxation Meditation Technique for Stress Reduction:

  • You may try this meditation technique with your eyes closed as well, if you find that works better for you.
  • You should adjust the distance your hands are away from your chest by ensuring that when you breathe out the air is cooing the inside of your palms.

That concludes the Relaxation Meditation Technique for Stress Reduction.

After doing the spinal warmups we worked on particular stretches which facilitate sitting for long periods in meditation.  We followed up these stretches with doing some work on our core and abs.

Then, to prepare the mind for meditation, we did one of my favorite pranayama combos which helps settles the mind down and integrate all your senses.

Finally, we practiced Zen Meditation (Breath Awareness / Zazen) together.  For the more advanced practitioners we did a variation of Zen Meditation which included drift analysis and thought perception.

Top 5 Meditation Myths Busted

Meditation Myth #1

Meditation Requires the Mind to be Still

This is the number #1 Meditation Myth.

Although it is indeed the most incredible state which reveals the True Unfragmented Reality that lies beyond thoughts, meditation does not require the mind to be still.  This is one of the biggest myths of meditation.  In fact it is our very thoughts which provide the atmosphere where the ever-present activity of moment to moment learning takes place.

The First Law of TantraThis learning, born out of intelligence and awareness, is the core of meditation.  Thus you can now understand when we say meditation is not just the formal practice done while being seated, but is a practice which can continue throughout the day and night.

If thoughts are moving, as is the nature of the mind, then meditation can bring awareness to them.  So is a still mind then a possibility and where does it fit in, given that it is such an exalted state?

Stillness comes in one of the following ways.  At night, especially if awareness throughout the day has been maintained, after the day’s work is done, if one’s practice is strong, or immediately when the mind sees itself as the root cause of suffering during an intense meditation session.

So the lesson here is not to be disappointed if your mind is moving during meditation, just keep watch.  Which means keep understanding the mind and thoughts from moment to moment.  The benedictions that come from holy silence will descend on their own.

Here is a comprehensive meditation program for looking to explore this wonderful topic further.  Silent Mind Meditation Program

Meditation Myth #2 and #3

Meditation is Complicated and Hard

I will address Meditation Myth #2 and Meditation Myth #3 together.

These are both myths.  Meditation has been complicated by those who do not understand what it is.  They have created all kinds of activities under the banner of meditation, mostly so they can package and sell it.

Fundamentally meditation is your capability to be a light unto yourself.  It is the potential of the mind to observe and understand itself in action.  That is the core of meditation.

So it need not be made complicated.  It requires your interest and your application.  Find a quiet moment and witness the thoughts taking place within.  Neither indulge them not condemn them, just watch and understand their stories.

So why is this hard to do?  I say it is not.  Thinking meditation is hard, is just a way for the mind to make excuses and continue on its lazy way.  Yes, watching each thought, very closely, and instantly digesting it, requires energy and intensity, but it is also great fun.

You have to try it to find out for yourself, but certainly don’t let the Myth that meditation is complicated and hard stop you from embarking on this transformative journey.

Here is where you can get started in your meditation journey:  Free Online Beginners Meditation Program

Meditation Myth #4

You need a Guru to Practice Meditation

If you understand the horror which authority creates for the mind and realize authority is the root cause of your misery you will completely reject the idea of a guru immediately.  I think it is essential to understand this topic in order to make progress in your spiritual journey.

Authority establishes the ideal and the ideal, which is unachievable, creates the seeking, which prevents us from seeing the absolute perfection of the moment.  There are many article and videos on this site which deep dive into this very important subject, so I encourage you to explore those…

Realizing Perfection Through Meditation

How to Find Your True Guru

How to End Endless Desire

The basic fact is that you have all the necessary tools in order to discover the Truth.  You do not need another and in fact, if the other is placed in a position of authority, it will actually make it harder for you to find the Truth.  Yes, you can be inspired and guided by others, but Enlightenment requires you to make the journey yourself.

Have confidence in yourself and follow you inner guidance.  And, don’t worry, if you put your trust in life, she will be there to help you whenever you need.

Meditation Myth #5

Meditation’s Goal is Stress Relief

What!?  You really think men and women who have dedicated their entire lives to meditation were just trying to get stress relief?  Meditation is the greatest gift humans have been given and yes stress relief is one of the side benefits of meditation, but the true purpose of meditation is Enlightenment.

It is absolutely fine if you take up meditation in order to reduce stress, in fact, no matter what the reason for your taking up meditation, I am just delighted that you started.  Once meditation enters your life, basically then you enter life.  Until then you are simply living in your reactive mind.  In order to touch life directly, you need to discover meditation, and if you end up spending your life only in your mind, never touching life, that then is the greatest of tragedies.

To explore all the various side benefits of meditation, you can explore the following articles:

Top 10 Profound Benefits of Meditation

Vipassana Meditation Benefits

Top 5 Meditation Myths Conclusion:

Meditation is the key to achieving the highest purpose of human birth.  It is very important to not be dissuaded from taking up this wonderful art due to the many myths that surround the practice.

Don’t get deterred because you have been told it is too hard or because you feel your mind is too active.  And most certainly don’t fall for the myth that you need to have a Guru.  That is the most dangerous of all the myths as it allows you to be taken advantage of by fake Gurus.  In fact, these days I am seeing even dead “Gurus” being used to steal money from vulnerable people.

Finally, understand that meditation is more than just for relaxation.  You will get all the side benefits of meditation if you practice seriously, but most importantly you will realize Oneness and discover the bliss of Divinity.

So go forth and Meditate !!

Meditation Music can be great for relaxing and stress reduction.  It can also be used as music therapy for self healing and, of course, can be very inspiring as it directs your mind and heart towards the sublime.  Below are some ways in which to use these MP3s to enhance your life and practice.

Meditation Music to Awaken the Soul:

Vladimir writes beautifully about the power of music to touch our souls.

“Of all the arts which serve our enjoyment, music is the loftiest. It brings us closer to truth than any other art. Music speaks a language which is universally acknowledged throughout the world.

When we try to understand this peculiar power which resides in music, we find that it is the most transient of all the others. The sounds which delight our ears have appeared suddenly out of the absolute silence which envelops the world and they disappear almost instantaneously into that same silence.

Music carries with it something of the divine power which lives in that great silence. It is an ambassador sent by God to remind us wandering mortals of our real home.”
