Eckhart Tolle – A Modern Spiritual Teacher

There are many spiritual teachers in the world today, but how can you tell if they are genuine or fake? For the novice meditator, or seeker of truth, it’s almost impossible to see through the acting of a wannabe guru.

A Modern Enlightened Master

So, in this post I’ll introduce you to one of my main spiritual teachers.  His name is Eckhart Tolle and he is both genuine, deeply inspiring and highly evolved. There are three things that make him stand out: Eckhart is a Westerner, he is not affiliated with any religion or tradition and he teaches in three languages.

Eckhart Toole’s Biography

Eckhart was born in Germany in 1948 and his parents gave him the name Ulrich. He was bullied in school from a young age and found the environment so hostile that he eventually refused to attend classes.

Eckhart’s parents often argued at home which finally lead to a divorce.  Then, at the age of thirteen he moved to live with his father who had remarried in Spain. Eckhart never went to school full-time in Spain but he studied things that interested him such as languages, mysticism and astronomy.

At nineteen he went to live in London, UK, where he managed to get a job teaching German without any formal qualifications. Tolle eventually ended up in a PhD program at Cambridge university.

Awakening And Starting To Teach

All those years Eckhart had been deeply depressed, at times he was even suicidal. As it were, one night he woke up feeling anxious and terribly depressed. At that moment he realized the illusion of self. Eckhart was 29-years old when he attained higher consciousness.

He gradually started to teach in small groups at friends’ homes, round London. Years later, Eckhart moved to Canada and had his first book published in 1997, called The Power Of Now. Oprah Winfrey really took a liking to his beautiful teachings, and quickly millions of people where introduced to his profound spiritual wisdom. Since then, Eckhart has been teaching worldwide.

Eckhart Tolle’s Teachings

Like the title of his first book suggests, The Power Of Now, Eckhart’s teachings strongly emphasize awareness of the present moment. Another word for it is mindfulness. He encourages people to bring awareness into everyday live. His teachings are clear-cut and easy to understand for modern people. Moreover, Tolle often refers to Jesus and Buddha – however, he is not affiliated with any religion or spiritual tradition.

Eckhart’s style of teaching is as humorous as it’s humble; he is a very likeable person. I suggest you watch some of his free videos at YouTube to find out for yourself…

There is only one thing I miss with regard to his teachings. It’s not a major shortcoming but I wish he taught walking meditation, since it’s such a powerful practice.

Good luck!

While I completely agree that he is the worst kind of intellectual and emotional fraud, I do not agree that he is a good writer-far from it!

Eckhart Tolle is a fraud who feeds on the innocence of the spiritually immature. He is absolutely not enlightened; he is just a good writer. Spiritual misguidance is very dangerous. Tolle, Dyer, Chopra, and Osho are all fallen foo-foo new agers engaged in the ego to an alarming consistency. Simply stay away.

Hello~I was blessed to have came across Tolles teachings when I was in spiritual need. This was 4 years ago. Since then, he and a few other great ones have became my greatest teachers. I have became a spiritual consultant, reiki master and teacher and published the book “Who’s Got the Chi”. With my book hitting the shelves just months ago and building a business in the field of metaphysics I dream of the moment I can thank any and all of my great teachers. I would love for the opportunity to be interviewed about my book, road to self discovery or my business. My intention is soon become certified in yoga and meditation through your teachings and website. I feel sooo blessed to have found your website and have just recently started the meditation practices :) love them. I will be ordering your cert. program as soon as my bank book says it is time;). I cannot express my gratitude to you and all those out there who are making a difference in the world~thank you~Namaste~Wendy Latoski
