Karma Yoga Teachings from the Masters

What is Karma Yoga

Karma Yoga Quotes

Here are two inspirational quotes from the Tao Te Ching on Karma Yoga (the Yoga of Action), about how one ought to approach one’s life and work.  They are consistent with Lord Krishna’s teachings of Karma Yoga from the Bhagawat Gita.  The essence of these teachings is to do the work that is required of you by life, without placing emphasis on the results or rewards of the work.

You can read about Krishna’s teachings in the following article, The Yoga of Meditation, and below you will find the similar views expressed by the great Taoist master Lau-tzu.

Yoga Teachings

Book: Tao Te Ching

Author: Stephen Mitchell

Tao Te Ching Quote #1 on Work and Karma Yoga:

Therefore the Master

acts without doing anything

and teaches without saying anything.

Things arise and she lets them come;

things disappear and she lets them go.

She has but doesn’t possess,

acts but doesn’t expect.

When her work is done, she forgets it.

That is why it lasts forever.

Karma Yoga Quote from Lau-tzu #2:

Do your work, then step back.

The only path to serenity.

What is Karma Yoga?

Karma Yoga is the art of how to do your work (duty) without over emphasizing the ego and the “I”.  To simply do what is required and then leave it alone.  Not mull the results, or expect rewards, or look for compliments and accolades.  Just keep it simple and pure.  Here is a Karma Yoga quote from the Bhagwat Gita to shed more light on this topic.

Book: Bhagavad Gita

Author: Swami Prabhavananda and Chirstpher Isherwood

Krishna’s Teachings on Karma Yoga

The ignorant work

For the fruit of their action:

The wise must work also

Without desire

Pointing man’s feet

To the path of his duty.

Let the wise beware

Lest they bewilder

The minds of the ignorant

Hungry for action:

Let them show by example

How work is holy

When the heart of the worker

Is fixed on the Highest.

In the above excerpt, an additional technique for Karma Yoga is indicated, which is to do all work keeping in mind that it is the nothing more than the Lord acting through you, or doing all work as an offering to Divinity.

There are other approaches as well, which are very effective in helping you keep the ego out of the way with regard to your work, and I will discuss those in future articles on Karma Yoga.

Beautiful Prayer to Talk to God

How to Talk to God

Prayer for Talking to God

For 20+ years now, my mother, Shobha Mehta, has been running a monthly spiritual get-together which is focused on helping children develop into compassionate, wise and positive human beings.  A part of the studies is also for them to learn about the various aspects of Divinity and how to integrate God into their heart, mind and life.  In recent times, she has handed over the reigns to the next generation, and they have been marvelously continuing this great tradition that she started.  A special thanks to Harsh Mendiratta for continuing this most precious ritual.

This monthly “hawan” (prayers) has also evolved over time, and now the the children learn yoga, pranayama (breathing exercises) and meditation in addition to prayers and life lessons.  All in all, they are learning how to live life at their highest potential.  Of course the progress has also led to the creation of a wonderful website, which has lots on great free information on mantras and hawan, and you can visit that site here www.hawan.net.

Recently, the prayer group passed around the following mantra, called the Pranayama Mantra, which is a prayer to talk to God with.  It is a a beautiful prayer and a wonderful way to acknowledge the magnificence of God and include him into your life, so I thought it would be nice to share it with you all as well.

Prayer to Talk to God

I will ask my mother to recite this prayer for us in the near future, as she is a Sanskrit scholar, and create a free downloadable MP3, so you can hear how to correctly pronounce this mantra.  This mantra will also become part of our Free Online Mantra MP3 Download collection.  In that collection you will find many more excellent prayers, hymns and mantras for your spiritual practice.

Below you will find the details of the pranayama mantra, its meaning and also how to practice it as well.

Prāṇāyāma Mantra for Talking to God

om bhūḥ

(God you are the sustainer of life)

om bhuvaḥ

(God you are remover of miseries)

om svaḥ

(God you are blissful)

om mahaḥ

(God you are greatest amongst all)

om janaḥ

(God you are giver of life)

om tapaḥ

(God you are all knowledgeable)

om satyam

(God you are eternal)

Meaning of Pranayama Mantra:

O God! You are the form of breath. You are the destroyer of miseries, you are the form of pleasure, the greatest and the creator of all. You are the form of knowledge and truth. Keeping your virtues in my mind and worshiping you I am leaving all my faults aside.

How to Practice This Prayer:

Here are step by step instructions of how practice this wonderful prayer.

  • Sit up on a chair or sit with your legs crossed.  Keep you back straight.
  • Place your fingers in Gyan Mudra and place your wrists gently on your knees with your palms facing slightly up, or have your fingers interlaced and rest your hands gently in your lap.
  • Now as you inhale mentally say the sound “OM”  and as you exhale complete the phrase.  So for example, you say “OM” as you inhale and then “Bhuh” as you exhale, “OM” on the next inhale, and “Bhuvah” on the exhale, and continue in that way.
  • When you reach the end of the mantra, you start over again and continue for the duration of the time.

How Long to do This Prayer For:

  • This is a prayer you can do for as long as you like, I don’t think God minds how much you talk to him :-).  You can start with 3 minutes and build up your time from there.

Benefits of Prayer to Talk to God:

  • Excellent for sparking a devotional and loving attitude towards Divinity and all living beings.
  • Good for moving towards egolessness and non-duality.
  • Clams the mind and bestows peace and tranquility.
  • Builds mental focus and concentration.
  • Integrates the divine forces into you heart and life.

Practice Tips for Pranayama Prayer:

  • A good way to prepare the mind for this prayer is to precede it with Anuloma Viloma pranayama.  This breathing technique is excellent to do prior to any meditative or spiritual practice, as it settles the mind down and soothes your entire nervous system.  Do 5 rounds and then begin the prayer as described above.
  • If you are more comfortable with using the English words instead, that too is fine.  Do it the way that is most meaningful to you and that you vibe with the best.
  • For students in the Yoga Teacher’s Training or Meditation Teacher’s Training courses, this is a great prayer with which to end your class with as well.  It will help the students leave your class filled with love and peace.

Keeping God in mind at all times is the best way to get His help with you life and projects.  You can read more about this topic in the following post: Zen Teachings on God and How to Get His Help.

The Yoga of Meditation | Sri Krishna Teachings

What is the Yoga of Meditation

True Purpose of Yoga and Meditation

Today let us explore deep into what yoga is and specifically, what is the Yoga of Meditation.  This term, the Yoga of Meditation, is actually from the teachings of Sri Krishna from the Bhagavad Gita, and below I will provide several excerpts that reveal what is the meaning and true purpose of this type of yoga.

Yoga of Meditation, is speaking towards the mental and meditative aspects of yoga and how to go about practicing this highest yoga to achieve the highest Truth.

For those unfamiliar with the Bhagavad Gita, these are the essential teaching of Sri Krishna, that were presented to Arjuna to help him understand the real meaning and purpose of life and yoga.  The term Atman, used below, means eternal soul, and from the point of view of practice can be thought of as Pure Being or the Witnessing Consciousness.  Bhrahman, meaning the Supreme Divinity or God.

Sri Krishna Teachings

Book: Bhagavad Gita

Translated By: Swami Prabhavananda and Christopher Isherwood

Chapter:  The Yoga of Meditation (Pages 39-46)

Krishna Explains who is a Yogi and what the Yoga of Meditation is in the following excerpts:

He who does the task
Dictated by duty,
Caring nothing
For fruit of the action,
He is a Yogi.

If a yogi has perfect control over his mind, and struggles continually in this way to unite himself with Brahman, he will come at last to the crowning peace of Nirvana, the peace that is in me.

Yoga is not for the man who overeats, or for him who fasts excessively.  It is not for him who sleeps too much, or for the keeper of exaggerated vigils.  Let a man be moderate in his eating and his recreation, moderately active, moderate in sleep and in wakefulness.  He will find that yoga takes away all his unhappiness.

When can a man be said to have achieved union with Brahman?  When his mind is under perfect control and freed from all desires, so that he becomes absorbed in the Atman, and nothing else.  “The light of a lamp does not flicker in a windless place”: that is the simile which describes a yogi of one-pointed mind, who meditates upon the Atman.  When, through the practice of yoga, the mind ceases its restless movements, and becomes still, he realizes the Atman.  It satisfies him entirely.  Then he knows that infinite happiness which can be realized the the purified heart but is beyond the grasp of the senses.  He stands firm in this realization.  Because of it, he can never again wander from the innermost truth of his being.

Now that he holds it
He knows this treasure
Above all others:
Faith so certain
Shall never be shaken
By heaviest sorrow.

To achieve this certainly is to know the real meaning of the word yoga.  It is the breaking of contact with pain.  You must practice this yoga resolutely, without losing heart.  Renounce all your desires, forever.  They spring from willfulness.  Use your discrimination to restrain the whole pack of the scattering senses.

Patiently, little by little, a man must free himself from all mental distractions, with the aid of the intelligent will.  He must fix his mind upon the Atman, and never think of anything else.  No matter where the restless and unquiet mind wanders, it must be drawn back and made to submit to the Atman only.

Utterly quiet,
Made clean of passion,
The mind of the yogi
Knows that Brahman,
His bliss is the highest.

He later says, in response to Arjuna’s assertion that the mind is impossible to tame.

Yes, Arjuna, the mind is restless, no doubt, and hard to subdue.  But it can be brought under control by constant practice, and by the exercise of dispassion.  Certainly, if a man has no control of his ego, he with find this yoga difficult to master,  But a self-controlled man can master it, if he struggles hard, and uses the right means.

Yoga of Meditation Analysis:

Here are the highlights from these teachings:

1. You Need Abiding Passion:

If there is one prerequisite for attaining enlightenment it is not just fleeting passion for Truth and meditation, but life-long passion.  It is this life-long passion which will carry you to the final station.  So as Krishna says above, don’t lose heart and make your motto to simply Keep Going!

2. The Purpose of the Yoga of Meditation is to Silence the Mind:

This is the true purpose of the Yoga of Meditation.  To still the minds of thoughts so that the Atman or Infinite aspect of yourself can reveal itself.  As long as the mind remains occupied there is no space for this inner light to shine through.  You can constantly busy with the demands of the ego, and you will not able to establish yourself in the Witness Consciousness or Pure Being.  So practice meditation and constant awareness so that the mind can quiet down and you can realize your true divine nature.

3. Yoga of Meditation is the Practice of Dispassion:

The way out of suffering is to distance yourself from results and focus on just what needs to be done in the moment.  In fact, this is how Krishna describes a true Yogi.  One who does what needs to be done and then leaves the results to God.  Just do what is required, forget the rest.

You want to reach the stage where you can say, “I don’t mind what happens.”  This is the great secret of the enlightened masters, they simply don’t mind what happens, they are always at ease with everything.

Meditation Versus Time | Mortal Enemies Forever

Timelessness and Meditation

Meditation to Transcend Time

Thinking involves time and that prevents meditation, and meditation involves being and that destroys time.  This is the fundamental battle raging in our lives.  Either we absorb ourselves in time and thought, or we give ourselves to the eternal now and transcend it.  The direction to take is really obvious, for with meditation you get bliss and with time you get suffering.

Time means you are constantly involved in the battle of becoming, acquiring and achieving.  Always enslaved by desire, thus chasing and seeking, while meditation means you are a student of the present, always aware of what is, the here and now, and moving with it spontaneously.  Which will you do?  That separates a life spent superficially, versus a life spent deep in the heart of Reality.  It is up to you.

Meditation Versus Time Mortal

For further inspiration, here is a wonderful quote from J. Krishnamurti explaining how meditation and time cannot coexist.

Book:  Meditations

Author: J. Krishnamurti

Topic: Meditation and Time

To meditate is to transcend time.  Time is the distance that thought travels in its achievements.  The traveling is always along the old path covered over with a new coating, new sights, but always the same road, leading nowhere – expect to pain and sorrow.

It is only when the mind transcends time that truth ceases to be an abstraction.  Then bliss is not an idea derived from pleasure but an actuality that is not verbal.

The emptying of the mind of time is the silence of truth, and the seeing is the doing; so there there is no division between the seeing and doing.  In the interval between seeing and doing is born conflict, misery and confusion.

That which has no time is the everlasting.

Meditation and Time Summary:

So what needs to be done?  Be constantly aware.  That is all.  Be constantly aware of of your thoughts and feelings.  Awareness is the answer.  As Nisargadatta Maharaj, the great Advaita Master has pointed out…

A quiet mind is all you need. All else will happen rightly, once your mind is quiet. As the sun on rising makes the world active, so does self-awareness affect changes in the mind. In the light of calm and steady self-awareness, inner energies wake up and work miracles without any effort on your part.

Take this weekend and give yourself to this practice of constant self-awareness.  All else will take care of itself and your life will move gracefully towards Divinity and Timelessness.

Mastery of Meditation Online Center

Online Meditation Certification Course

Student Testimonial for Online Meditation School and Certification Program:

Dave Writes:

The course was everything I hoped it would be and more. Your depth of knowledge and teaching skills are excellent and all instruction was presented in a easy to understand way. I regret I have no suggestions at this time, because you have an excellent program.

(Update: New website with more testimonials for program can be found here: Meditation Teacher Training and Certification Program).

One of the most satisfying aspect of creating and running Mastery of Meditation and Yoga, is the success that the Online Meditation School and Teacher’s Certification Program are having.  The vision for creating a meditation center and university was always there, but that is was going to be realized online through this website and blog, was certainly unanticipated and a pleasant surprise .

online meditation

To date the school has certified meditation teachers from every corner of the world.  There are graduates from the United States, Canada, India, Australia, New Zealand, England, Sweden, Greece, Spain, Austria, Bulgaria, South Africa, Dubai and Turkey, and students are currently enrolled from a variety of other countries spanning the entire globe as well

To see a full list of graduates and find a certified teacher near you to learn meditation from, you can visit the Online Certified Meditation Teachers and Centers Directory.  As the school continues to expand rapidly, this directory is also updated constantly.

The best part of the Mastery of Meditation School is that it helps to spread the wisdom of meditation and enlightenment, which I feel is the key to humanity’s future and well-being.  The more teachers there are, the more the wisdom is spread and the greater the affect on the collective human consciousness.  To be a channel for facilitating these teachings is something I will always be grateful to the Universe for.

Recently I noticed that a lot of billionaires were having a lot of get-togethers around the globe.  What were they always discussing?  How they could help their fellow man.  So what are they realizing?  They are realizing that one of the most important things to do in life is to be of service to others.  Us meditation teachers have realized that already , and also realize that the most important service is guiding others to the Truth of Divinity, Self-Realization, Peace and Joy.

I would like to congratulate all the latest graduates from the Mastery of Meditation School, and welcome you all as fellow Certified Teachers.  For others who are interested in joining this online course and working towards your certification, you will find information and testimonials in the links below…

I feel this program is a gift to the world and I’ve mentioned it to many friends. Through my site I believe my students and other youngsters interested in my musical program would benefit from everything you have to say. I already used the breathing techniques with them and some mantras. I see excellent results especially with ADD youngsters.

(Don’t worry Anastacia, you are well on your way to passing ).

Morgana from Canada Writes:

My feedback: Wow – the beginning of an amazing journey. Since the day I committed to working through the program daily – amazing! I had tried on my own in the past years to teach myself to meditate – but almost every single time I fell asleep and I really didn’t get very far. However, with your guidance and teaching I pushed beyond and learning to meditate has been a life changing experience.

The course is well organized, insightful, and easy to understand. The various techniques for meditation provide a solid foundation, encourage students to explore each technique to find what works best for them, and then take that further.

Course Materials (Free Online Meditation Videos and Free Yoga Breathing Videos):

Free Online Advanced Meditation Class Syllabus:

The following describes the 2 sections comprising the 40-60 minute daily breathing and meditation session for this class.  Each breathing exercise and meditation technique below is a link to the article with all the details you need.

Each day do the following…

Section 1: Yogic Breathing Section

Total time 1-11 Minutes.

  • Supreme Yogic Breath for Brain Development and Mind Control:  Supreme Yogic Breath or 1 Minute Breathing is excellent for helping you settle the mind down and prepare it for meditation.  This is an advanced breathing exercise and should not be practiced by beginners.  If you are a beginner please do the modified versions of this technique.  Start with 5 seconds and build up slowly to the full 20 second cycle.

Section 2: Meditation Section:

Total time 30-55 minutes.

Please note that at least 30 minutes is recommended to give this meditation a chance to work for you, so you need to be able to sit still for that amount of time for this class.

  • Silent Mind Mediation Technique:  After you complete your breathing exercise, you should feel your mind calmer and more steady.  Then begin the meditation practice.  Since Silent Mind Meditation requires you to comprehend your thoughts from moment to moment, it is easier to do after the mind calms down a bit.  So if you have a more basic meditation which helps you do this further, such as Mantra Meditation or Breath Meditation (Zazen), go ahead and use that for the first 5-10 minutes of your meditation session, until you are ready to attack the thinking mind with SM. Do read the details of the SM technique from the articles and watch the required meditation videos as well.  Understanding what is required of you is essential if you are to master this advanced technique. Please note that SM is not easy to do, after all this is an advanced meditation class.  It is not complex, but it is arduous.  So be prepared to give it your all.  The most important thing is to give it your best each time to you sit to meditate.  The thing about meditation, is that even if you don’t see the results right away, it is still transforming you slowly and over time you will find yourself happier, healthier and more in touch with your true self and Divinity.  If you are passionate, breakthroughs will come.

Free Online Advanced Meditation Class Guidelines:

Following are the guidelines which I suggest to follow…

  • Please post all comments, questions and feedback in the comments section of this post.  This way all will benefit from the discussion.  Feel free to ask questions or discuss issues, as that is one of the main reasons for this particular class format.  Of course, you are free to email me as well if you would like the discussion to not be public.
  • I wish you all a wonderful learning and transforming experience.  Practicing Meditation is without a doubt the single greatest factor in helping you discover your True Self and live your life at your Highest Potential.  If you have any doubt about whether or not to start such a meditation practice, just go ahead and review the benefits section above.  That should be more than enough to inspire you to jump in.

The 3 Fundamental Teachings of Vedanta and the Harmony of Religions

Vedanta and Hinduism

Yoga Philosophy

(Anmol: Here is a great article by guest author David explaining the foolishness of fighting with each other due to superficial differences in the various spiritual paths.  David is a deeply spiritual being with great knowledge and wisdom about natural healing, yoga and meditation.  Read more of his wonderful writings on his website and blog http://scientificliving.net/.

Teachings of Vedanta and the Harmony

The 3 Fundamental Teachings of Vedanta and the Harmony of Religions

By David

At some point or the other, the Indian system of religion had a name given to it called “Hinduism” (i.e. “Indianism”). But this name isn’t actually descriptive of anything. Before this, the Hindu religion was known as the “Sanatana Dharma”, which means the “Eternal Religion”. One might think that Hindus then have the idea that their views alone are right, and others wrong. Afterall, their religion gets to be called the Eternal Religion! But that is not actually the meaning of Sanatana Dharma. This religion is eternal in the sense that it emphasizes the underlying unity and common threads of all spiritual systems. All religions in the world are in this sense part of the one Eternal Religion. It is only that the essentials of spiritual truth have been clothed in different garments (so to speak) again and again, so as to fit the needs of a particular era and its specific set of circumstances.

The philosophy that declares these common essentials of all religions is known as “Vedanta”, which can be taken to mean “the culmination of spiritual truth”. The main teachings of Vedanta have been summarized by Swami Vivekananda in three main points:

1. Each soul is potentially divine:

Yes, everyone is in fact divine, yet we have to admit that we see a difference between someone who is always kind and peaceful, and someone who is often angry or violent. The difference lies in the degree in which divinity has become manifest in each person. Both are divine, but one has awakened that latent divinity to a higher degree. That is why it is said that each soul is potentially divine.

2. The goal is to manifest this divinity:

“The goal is to manifest this Divinity within by controlling nature, external and internal. Do this either by work, or worship, or psychic control, or philosophy – by one, or more, or all of these – and be free. This is the whole of religion. Doctrines, or dogmas, or rituals, or books, or temples, or forms, are but secondary details.” ~Swami Vivekananda

The means by which we “control nature” are called “yogas”. Yogas are methods of union with the Divine. There are four main yogas referred to in this quote:

Jnana Yoga: The yoga of knowledge:

Intellectually understanding what must be done to make spiritual progress, how to do it, and why it works might all go under the classification of Jnana Yoga. Studying scriptures, books, or even articles such as this one and others found on Anmol’s site, all qualify as Jnana Yoga. Discriminating between what is real and unreal, or between what is helpful and what is unhelpful, also fits here. This path is for those with predominant intellectual tendencies.

Raja Yoga: The yoga of meditation and psychic control:

After having heard and reflected on teachings of how to practice meditation, actually doing so can be called Raja Yoga. This path is also called “Dhyana” Yoga – the yoga of meditation. It is for those with predominant contemplative tendencies.

Karma Yoga The yoga of selfless action:

Doing all actions with the attitude that I am serving God, and with the attitude that though you have the right to act, you do not have the right to the fruits of those actions, is called the yoga of action. This path is for those with very active tendencies.

Bhakti Yoga The yoga of love and devotion:

This path is for those with devotional or emotional tendencies. Here, the spiritual seeker longingly worships God by assuming a definite attitude, such as that of a servant, friend, child, etc. These 4 yogas are neither exclusive nor exhaustive. One finds that ultimately, they are all very similar. All seekers -to some degree or another- practice all of these yogas at once. However, one yoga will tend to predominate according to an individual’s temperament.

3. These truths are universal:

The “secondary details” mentioned by Vivekananda are what allow these universal teachings to be applied to various cultures in various times and circumstances. If you examine all religions closely, you find that they all have this same goal of manifesting the latent divinity within man. The methods are also fundamentally the same. The apparent differences are only in superficial aspects.

“Truth is one; only It is called by different names. All people are seeking the same Truth; the variance is due to climate, temperament, and name. A lake has many ghats. From one ghat the Hindus take water in jars and call it ‘jal’. From another ghat the Mussalmāns (Muslims) take water in leather bags and call it ‘pāni’. From a third the Christians take the same thing and call it ‘water’. Suppose someone says that the thing is not ‘jal’ but ‘pāni’, or that it is not ‘pāni’ but ‘water’, or that it is not ‘water’ but ‘jal’, It would indeed be ridiculous. But this very thing is at the root of the friction among sects, their misunderstandings and quarrels. This is why people injure and kill one another, and shed blood, in the name of religion. But this is not good. Everyone is going toward God. They will all realize Him if they have sincerity and longing of heart.” ~Sri Ramakrishna

It is very important to have faith in ones own spiritual path. It is natural and even helpful to believe one’s own path is best. But one great message of Vedanta is to always remember that your own path is not the only way. All paths are true. The proof is that people have in fact realized God in innumerable ways. God is the sole author of truth, and he cannot be copyrighted by anyone. Remember that in a sense, whether they are doing so consciously or unconsciously, all people are practicing the one Eternal Religion, wrapped in different clothing.
