SM Meditation Program: Yoga for Energy (Kundalini): Chapter 9

Chapter 9

Silent Mind Meditation Program:  Yoga for Energy (Kundalini)

As you begin to participate in the Silent Mind meditations of phase 2 it is going to become self-evident the need for tremendous energy.  This energy is going to be absolutely necessary in order to watch and instantly comprehend the actuality of the subtle mind in motion.  The yoga work that you will do during this phase is designed precisely to help increase and harness this vital energy.  As mentioned earlier, remember to pace yourself and not overdo it, use common sense and work around your injuries.  Try not to eat at least 1 to 2 hours before doing your daily session and wear loose comfortable clothing.  The Yoga for Energy set takes 30 minutes to complete and is described in Appendix 2 [Appendix 2: Yoga for Energy Set].  This set is to be done daily for the next 4 weeks prior to your 30 minute meditation practice.

The following Pranayam is used in the Yoga for Energy set [Appendix 2].

Breath Work: Left Nostril Breathing

Meditation

The following Pranayam, uses the science of breathing through selective nostrils.  It is designed to increase your creative and meditative energies and should be practiced for 5 minutes at the start of the Yoga for Energy set.

Description:  Sit in Sukh Asan or lie in Shav Asan.  Curl your index and middle fingers of your right hand down into your palm and point your pinkie, ring finger and thumb upwards.  Your thumb will be used to block your right nostril while your ring finger and pinkie will be used to block your left nostril.  You will breathe in from your left nostril in 4 parts and exhale in 1 part through your right.  So it will take you 4 sniffs to inhale completely through the left nostril and only 1 breath to exhale all the air out through the right nostril.  It is important to fill you lungs to full capacity by the fourth inhalation and empty them completely during exhalation.  You will continue for 5 minutes.

Benefits:  Breathing through the left nostril activates the right hemisphere of the brain, which is responsible for your artistic, creative and intuitive qualities.  It is a breath pattern to calm your mind and prepare for meditation.  Breaking up the inhalation portion of the breath into 4 parts allows you to utilize your full lung capacity.  It helps deepen your breathing, bringing in more oxygen and expanding your respiratory system.

Cautions:  If you start to feel dizzy switch to LDB or normal breathing and return to the given pranayam when you feel ready.

    Shyam Singh,

Welcome! Sometimes yoga comes naturally to some people. Sounds like Kundalini rising. However raising the energy is best done gradually with guidance.

You mention that you have no Yoga background. With that in mind I would suggest the following:

Start with the Beginners Kundalini Yoga just to get you started with the correct postures and get you comfortable.

Next you can read the Introduction to Kundalini Yoga and start with the Silent Mind program moving through the chapters in order (as listed on the page).

You can also browse through Kundalini Awakening Symptoms to get an insight into the experiences of others.

Please feel free to let us know should you have any issues or concerns.

    All the best,
    Trupti

    Dear Anmol,
Complements of the season to you and your loved ones. Before I raise my query, I want to tell you that I have been practicing Wired Martial Art from last two years and have good stamina and strong will power to achieve my goals in my day to day life. I had started an activity a week ago about which I’m not sure if I’m doing Kundalini Yoga or Silent Mind Meditation or something else rather than it I’m only sure about the intention of the activity when I started the same and that is to fully awaken my Kundalini from it’s primordial dormant state and I did some deep analysis of the Seven Chakra System and their characteristics e.g., Mystical Diagrams, Associated Colour, Order from Base of Spine up to Head region and their respective position in physical and energy body.

As I had said earlier, I have had no idea and no Yoga background except the strong will to achieve the goal, I usually sit in a crossed leg position with my back erect up to top of head and eyes closed in a usual manner. As soon as I started focusing on the Root or Muladhara Chakra for 1-5 minutes, a strong heating sensation started arising in the Prosthetic Zone of my body and it continues to flow in upward direction which is completely under my will to rise up or not but if I surrender to that heating sensation it automatically rise up towards Head region.
At this stage, I’m a little bit confused. Is it a positive sign of Kundalini Awakening or something else? Should I practice in the same manner similar to that what I’m doing or I need to change my activity to reach my goals? There are some other signs too which are appearing like negligible or very less breathing in about 10 minutes of starting the activity, heart beat continuously decreasing and reach up to 45-50 from 70 and so on.
Please guide me through the above mentioned phenomenon so that I would be able to continue or to acquire some modifications or to do any other required implications.
    With Deep Regards,
