How Much Time Should You Practice Meditation For Daily?

There is a famous story of a Kundalini Yoga Master who was desperate to increase the amount of time he spent doing his daily meditation practice.  The story says that the Yogi nailed his pony tail to the wall so that when he would start to dose off he would be rudely awakened by his contraption, and that this technique allowed him to successfully meditate for 22 hours daily.  Are you ready for that :-)?  Luckily, 22 hours of daily meditation is not a prerequisite for spiritual growth or enlightenment, but the point of the story is that the ask is not cheap either.  So how long should one meditate for daily?

Before we go into the numbers it is important to clarify exactly what type of meditation we are talking about here.  There are many schools of meditation, each with their own techniques and methods.  Here, we are referring to the meditations that are done being mostly physically still.  So this would include zen meditation (zazen), vipassana, insight meditation, jyana yoga, the Silent Mind (SM) Meditations, and meditations that utilize an object for concentration (3rd eye meditation, mantra meditation, visualization, sound, trataka (candle flame gazing), 3 step rhythmic breath (3srb) meditation or similar variation of breath meditation, etc).  The other types of meditations involving dance (shiva tandava – dance of death), Osho’s meditations (kundalini, dynamic, etc), laya yoga meditations, and other such meditations have specific time requirements to work their magic and I am not referring to them in this discussion.  So, now on to the numbers.

Practice Meditation For Daily

The minimum time one should aim to set aside for daily meditation is 20 minutes.  Let me tell you a true story.  In my post graduate years I was studying cognitive psychology and artificial intelligence, looking to actually do empirical studies on meditative states of consciousness.  One of my philosophy professor’s told me to join a Zen meditation club which practiced zazen regularly on campus.  Till then, I had only meditated on my back lying down or during long walks, but I decided to attended their zazen session.  It was meant to be two 20 minute sessions and let me tell you I ran away after the first 20 minutes.  I still to this day remember the sensei saying “I guess he is leaving,” as I snuck out the back door.  Only later, after luckily coming across Charlotte Joko Beck’s Everyday Zen: Love and Work, did I really start to established a strong, regular zazen practice.  The point here is that 20 minutes initially, if you have not done formal sitting meditation before, is much harder than you might think.  So, if it takes you some time to get to 20 minutes of daily meditation, that is perfectly fine.  Start with less, but aim at building up your meditation to this amount of time.  Read The Golden Rule to Stop Excuses and Start Meditation Now for more guidance to get your practice started if you need it.

Why 20 minutes of meditation?  From my experience I can say that 20 minutes daily proved to be very effective.  On its own everything just start to transform.  Others, over time, have also probably found that this amount of time has worked well for bringing about positive changes in themselves and so the number has become the de facto standard for a starting practice.

The next stage is 30 minutes, 2 times daily.  On my trip to Zen Mountain Monastery for their Zazen Training program, 30 minutes was the minimum time requirement for any zazen session.  I could relate to the difficulties some of the first timers were having with this length of time and unfortunately for them there was no back door to escape from either ;-).  Also, interestingly at Zen Mountain Monastery, you could request to be struck with a cane on your shoulders (at special acupressure points) to help you stay awake, drain emotional junk out of your system or as an aid to go deeper.  This is called keisaku and it can work as an alternative technique for you if you don’t have long hair like our Yogi friend above :-).  So work your way up to 30 minutes of meditation, and try to do that twice daily if possible.

Finally, you should build up to 1 hour of steady meditation practice everyday.  For extracting the maximum benefit from a meditation program this is the golden number.  To get to the experience of “Big Mind” as Zen Master Shunryu Suzuki describes the detached state, or the “Big Self” as described by the Advaita Vedanta teachers, or to get to the explosion of insight as put forth by J. Krishnamurti and the Silent Mind Meditations, 1 hour of meditation is usually needed.  This is primarily because it takes some time for the thinking process to slow down and for us to extract ourselves out of the daily drama of our little egos.  So there you have it.  Start and aim for 20 minutes of daily meditation and then build up to 1 hour.  You will find everything you are looking for, as you will discover that everything is you.

SM Meditation Program: Yoga for Meditation: Chapter 4

Chapter 4

Silent Mind Meditation Program: Yoga for Meditation

The goal of the physical work that you will do during weeks 1-4 is to help make the body transparent – invisible.  For many of us the body is used to being the center of attention, the master or better said, it is used to being the spoilt child.  During your meditation sessions you are going to hold physically still and the body is going to be mighty upset about being treated this way.  Its not that the body minds being still, its that it does not want to lose its rank as commander-in-chief and be forced to do things your way.  It has been used to getting its way, having every itch scratched and now that is no longer going to be the case.  Expect a fight!

To help in achieving this surrendering of the body it is wise to help it regain some of the flexibility and suppleness that it inherently has.  Thus, the first Yoga phase will focus on specific stretching exercises and postures that will ease the difficulty of sitting still and help manage the resistance that the body is going to put up.  In addition, the postures and

SM Meditation

exercises are going to help strengthen and purify the body and mind at many levels.  These benefits, along with cautions and modifications, are provided alongside each exercise illustrated and described in [Appendix 1:  Yoga for Meditation Set].  This set takes about 40 minutes to complete and should be practiced daily for phase 1.  The type of breathing that accompanies each exercise is also stated and these various breaths are described in the section below (Breath Work: Basic Pranayam).

Although developing your flexibility is going to go a long way in helping you to sit still, the body will nevertheless conjure up various minor physical disturbances to try to regain its rank as boss.  The best antidote to this is simply to ignore the disturbance while in mediation.  As you refuse firmly to submit to these demands the body will settle down and relinquish its desire for control.  So the combination of the Yoga for Meditation practice along with the meditation work in phase 1 will help prevent the body from becoming an obstacle on your journey towards the Mastery of Mediation.

Breath Work:  Basic Pranayam

Your first action when being born into life was to take a breath and now when you are about to begin the journey to be born into Reality, again breath is the place to start.  Breathing plays a key role in SM meditations for two specific reasons.  First, it is the source of vital energy or Prana for the entire being and second the movement of the mind and emotions is closely tied to our breathing patterns.  Thus breathing impacts the vitality of our Physical systems, our moods and finally intimately affects the velocity of our thoughts.  Specific breathing techniques that you will learn and practice will help in particular aspects of the SM program.

The science of breath manipulation is called Pranayam and for phase 1 you will be introduced to some basic pranic exercises. When it comes to Pranayam it is best not to overdo it.  This holds especially true for exercises that require suspension of breath for any significant period of time.  During the first 4 weeks you will primarily practice 3 types of breathing, Long Deep Breathing (LDB), Breath of Fire (BOF) and Silk Thread Breath (STB), none of which require suspension.  It is important to adhere to this caution and not jump ahead if you are new to Pranayam.  From a Yogic perspective Prana is the nuclear energy of atoms and it is important to approach this energy with respect and caution.

Below are the 3 breaths you will be using extensively during phase 1.  These are also described in Appendix 1 in the Yoga for Meditation set.

Long Deep Breathing (LDB):

Description:       Breathing is done by taking full deep breaths through the nose.  The key to LDB is to fill the lungs entirely on the inhalation and then exhale completely.  The diaphragm is kept relaxed and the stomach expands out on the inhalation and back in on the exhalation.  The chest also rises and falls during LDB.

Benefits:    LDB is excellent for expanding one’s lung capacity and bringing in maximum amount of oxygen to the system.

Cautions:   If you feel dizzy, return to normal breathing, but in general LDB should not pose much difficulty for you.

Breath of Fire (BOF):

Description:       Breathing is done rapidly through the nose with equal emphasis on the inhalation and exhalation- like very fast sniffing.  Keep the abdomen relaxed and allow it to pulse automatically with the breath.  Remember that the breath is not taken in very deep and the pace is fast, about 3 cycles per second.

Benefits:    Breath of Fire is the breath to do when you want to increase your energy and quickly oxygenate your blood.  It generates heat in the body, helps detoxify your system and syncronizes your entire system under one rhythm.

Cautions:   If you feel dizzy, slow down the force and/or speed at which you are doing the breathing.  Or you can substitute Long Deep Breathing for BOF until you feel ready to switch to BOF again.

Silk Thread Breath (STB):

Description:       This breath is the one that correlates to the mind that is in meditation.  It is a very smooth, light, deep breath that, like a silk thread, is almost unnoticeable.  It is very quiet and silent and there may be a prolonged gap between the inhalation and exhalation.  Later in the SM program you fill find that this gap corresponds directly to the state of mind that is silencing itself of thought.

Benefits:    As mentioned above, the movement of the mind is closely tied to the breath and the deep, silent nature of this breath influences the mind to also slow down and move inward.

Cautions:   There are no significant cautions to mention except to not prolong the gap between the inhalation and exhalation.  Let it emerge naturally and don’t force the space artificially.

Survey Results: What Do Relationships Need Most?

Relationship Research

A few weeks ago we ran the interesting survey “What is the Most Important Trait You Look for in a Partner?”  Today I want to share these results with you and here they are…

Survey Results
Value Count Percent %
Kind/Loving 24 68.57%
Sense of Humor 6 17.14%
Intelligent 4 11.43%
Good Looking 1 2.86%

As you can see from the above, Kind and Loving was the overwhelming choice of readers when deciding what was the most important trait in a partner and here is an interesting way to look at these results.

What Do Relationships Need

If Kind and Loving are indeed what most people want in a partner, I guarantee that if you embrace these two traits, your CURRENT relationship will improve dramatically.  What the survey is telling us is that we are looking for partners who are compassionate and nice, and if you are having a difficult time in any relationship, just try this approach.  Consciously be kind, loving, affectionate, forgiving and giving.  It is very likely that your partner will all of sudden feel that they are indeed very lucky to be in a relationship with you and this approach can transform the entire complexion of your relationship.

In the article, 5 Principles for Living an Enlightened and Good Life, affection was principle number 3, and in that article I indicated that the real challenge of being nice, was to be nice when things were tough.  So see if with your partner, spouse, children, colleagues, friends, and enemies too , you can be nice regardless of how difficult it is.  That is the basis of Loving Kindness Meditation and the basis of living a Godly life.

To understand more about the power of forgiveness and love, read The Time I Met God – Good News and Bad News

PS: Due to a technical problem I had to take the original survey article offline.  Hopefully I will have this corrected in time for the next survey .  Thanks for your understanding.

PPS: I am currently making some technical changes to the blog as well.

1. I am removing some of my stat collectors as the site is now too big and there is too much traffic for the product I was using .  This should help the performance and loading speed.

2. I am finally trying to fix the pop-up for the newsletter subscription that would come up too often.  Hopefully this will make your stay here on Mastery of Meditation and Yoga more enjoyable.

Essential Beginner’s Guide to Yoga Practice

Summary:  A beginner guide for those who are new to the world of yoga.  This guide details the 3 most essential guidelines for doing yoga exercises, as well as lists the other important requirements you should know before starting your practice.

Although there is tons of information on Mastery of Meditation on yoga, I wanted to glean some of the most important information and compile it here for those of you who are beginners or new to yoga practice.  This quick reference guide applies to all of you who are just starting your yoga practice and is independent of the type of yoga you are taking up.

Essential Beginner’s Guide

Three Essential Guidelines for How to Practice Yoga:

Yoga is not just a series of exercises, poses or movements.  As I have pointed out in the article Comprehensive Guide to the World of Meditation, yoga is a type of body meditation.  It is meditation in motion.  For you to extract maximum benefit from your yoga practice, these three key elements must never by forgotten.

1. Do Yoga Exercises With Full Awareness:

Try to be as aware as possible of every posture and movement you are making during your practice.  Check throughout your yoga session, as to where your mind is, and if it has wandered away, gently bring it back and focus again on the poses and the breathing.  This is the number one requirement of doing yoga, regardless of whether you are just a beginner yogi or a yoga master.

In addition, if certain feelings or energies awaken within you, bring your attention to them and observe them taking their course as you move through your practice.

2. Never Over Strain When Practicing Yoga:

As the requirement above, this guideline also applies to both beginner yoga practitioners as well as advanced yogis.  When doing my yoga teacher’s training course, what surprised me quite a bit, was how often these seasoned yogis were getting injured.  Yoga is a journey, it is be enjoyed and the sights and sounds taken in, it is not a competition.

If you are just beginning your practice, you need to give yourself time to gauge your capacity and limits.  So start off erring in the side of caution, rather than being over zealous.  Learn to listen to your body.  As you start to better understand your body and energy, you can start to explore your limits further and increase the challenge you place before yourself.  That being said, even as your yoga expertise develops, never forget this important rule and overdo it.

3. Yoga & Breathing Go Hand In Hand:

Don’t forget to breathe!  There are 2 aspects of breathing which every beginner yogi should be cognizant of.

First, yoga poses and exercises, generally have some breathing pattern associated with them.  This breath component of the yoga posture should not be ignored.  The breathing plays a very important role in yoga and in order to get the most out of your yoga practice, employ the correct breathing along with the movement.

Second, pranayama, or the science of expanding and controlling prana (chi/life-force) is a key aspect of yoga and should be an integral part of your yoga practice.  So, in addition to developing your physical yoga practice, be sure to also develop your expertise in pranayama.  As a beginner, make sure you start off gently, as pranayama is a very powerful science and make steady progress over time.

One final word about yoga breathing.  Your breath can be a good anchor to help you retain your awareness when your mind is wondering.  So it can go a long way in helping you with meeting the requirement of mindfulness, explained in guideline #1 above.

Other General Guidelines for Beginner Yoga Practitioners:

Having detailed the essential guidelines above, I will provide a bullet list below of some other general guidelines for the beginner yoga enthusiast to reference.

  • Don’t eat a big meal at least 2-3 hours before your yoga practice.
  • Wear comfortable exercise or other loose clothing so your movements are not restricted.
  • Try to do your yoga practice early in the morning if possible.
  • Make sure your yoga space is well ventilated.
  • If you have medical conditions, select your yoga exercises accordingly.
  • Drink plenty of water after practice to wash out toxins released by the yoga sets.
  • It is fine to use yoga props to help you, such as blocks, blankets, cushions etc.
  • It is fine to use music while practicing yoga, but not during silent meditation.
  • If you find a great yoga teacher, awesome, if you don’t, use your inner guru to guide you.
  • If is recommended to start and end your yoga practice with a prayer to the Lord.

The most important requirement in order to benefit from yoga, is to do your practice.  So jump in and start your journey, everyone is welcome.

How to Stop Worrying Forever

Stop Worrying About the Future

Worry and the stress it causes is the perhaps the biggest cause for our suffering and most damaging to our mental peace and emotional tranquility.  The worst part about worrying about the future is that it serves very little purpose.  It is basically the mind spinning and creating negative thoughts and negative emotions, which unchecked can wreck havoc on our health and wellbeing.  So how can we stop worrying once and for all…. forever?

Although there are different personality types, worry is a part of most everyone’s lives, but for the anxious, nervous personality type it can be crippling.  To end worrying one needs to first understand the fundamental root cause, then the solution presents itself.

Basically the mind worries because it is seeking security.  It’s the uncertainty of what might happen in the future that leads to worry.  Will I get fired from my job, will my relationship work, will my kids do well in school, will I lose weight, will I get sick, etc, etc, etc.  The future is unknown and there are innumerable things to worry about, and the problem is that even as something gets resolved, a new issue appears and you are then off and worrying again about it.  It is never-ending.

THE ONE WORD TO END WORRYING

So what can be done about this endless cycle of worrying and spinning of negative thoughts and emotions?  First, you have to realize that there is no such thing as psychological self security.  It is simply not achievable.  It does not exist.  You do not know the future and the future is forever unknown.  So you cannot predict it or hope for it to manifest in a particular way.  Does that mean you are resigned to worry and suffer endlessly?  No, not if you also realize the following…

The one word which will end worry forever is Trust.  Not trust in a savior, or guru, or some scripture, idol, messiah, no.  Just trust.  Trust, if anything you can say, Trust Life.  Trust the Universe, but really you have to just Trust.  If you can invoke this Trust in yourself, then worry will melt away.  Worry with end completely, as you are now living in Trust.

Stop Worrying About the Future

The 2 Levels of Trust

Now an interesting aspect of Trust is that it can manifest in 2 levels.  There is ordinary Trust and there is Absolute Trust.

Ordinary Trust to Combat Worrying:

Ordinary trust is trust which comes from intellectual understanding and awareness.  In other words you understand that the future cannot be controlled and that it is best to go with the flow and accept that which life provides.  Although it is extra ordinary to be able to trust in this way, this is still ordinary trust.

So can ordinary trust help melt away worry?  Absolutely.  Trust is one of those rare phenomena which can be effective even when just understood mentally.  Usually a much deeper experience and realization is needed for transformation to take place, but in the case of trust, even just understanding it will be very helpful.

So work towards that.  Understand the value of trust and wield that understanding like a sword to cut away worrisome thoughts when they start to emerge.  You will soon find worry falling away and life opening up.  You will learn to live in the present and leave the future to the Divine.

Absolute Trust to End the Worrying Mind:

So what is Absolute Trust then?  Absolute trust is a deep and actual state which one enters into upon experiencing trust directly from the Source.  This is best described as a mystical experience where assurance and complete security are being directly experienced as a benediction.  It is emanating from the source and being broadcast directly to you.  Of course, when being blessed in this way, there is no question of worry having any opportunity to take shape.

This experience of Trust and Total Non-Causal Security from the Source is not something that can be willed.  It comes as a by-product of a meditative life

Conclusion – How to Stop Worrying About the Future:

So to stop endless worrying and concern about what will happen in the future, at minimum develop Ordinary Trust.  If on your way, the Universe gifts you with an experience of Absolute Trust, then worry will never again be a worry :-).

Here is a great article on how to stop negative thinking with 10 practical techniques which work wonders.

Ten Gifts to Buy a Friend That Meditates

by guest author Geeta Yadav, The Art of Living Foundation

Gifts bring a smile to our face, a sparkle to our eyes and usher us to live the beautiful moment fully. Once the gift unfolds amidst childlike excitement; we feel on top of the world. Amazingly we are in the present moment with a gift in our hands. We cradle not the gift but the moment that gave us sheer joy. Perhaps this is the reason that a gift is also called a present.

My spiritual friend would wave off all my good intentions to buy a gift for him with, “Nature caters to all our need but not greed.”

Although his thoughts formed the solid bed rock of my life but still I researched enough to know what would bring a smile to my friend’s face. Here are some suggestions that may help you do the same.

Gift #1: A Bell

Yes! Although this may sound strange but when the bell chimes it makes us forget the clutter in our mind for a moment. In temples we ring the bell because it brings us to the present moment. This is done in many spiritual centres before seekers begin with a meditation session or group meditation. So if you gift a bell to your meditator friend, they can experience the peace at home.

Gift #2: Meditation Lamp

There are many types of meditation lamps, but a unique gift is a two piece punched lamp. A lit candle is kept at the base of the lamp and the open top is covered with a small pot that contains water. Few drops of aroma oils create an ambience and bring in relaxation.

Gift #3: Fragrances

Fragrances are mystic in nature and dwell in our subconscious minds as memories of people, religious places like temples, mazars and even churches. Nowadays scented candles are a lot in vogue. You may buy a diffuser, perfumed candles, incense sticks or simply aroma oils. If lavender arrests stress then sandalwood belongs to the divine and is a guide that helps in enlightenment. Bay and lemon grass deal with removal of negativity and purify.

Gift #4: Meditation Cushions

We need to ensure a good erect posture as we sit to meditate. Here comes the coveted role of a soft meditation cushion. You may personalize it with embroidered initials of your friend’s name or paint ‘Ohm’ to make it meaningful.

Gift #5: Meditation Books

Meditators are essentially seekers of knowledge. A book from a spiritual master like Sri Sri Ravi Shankar, the founder of the Art of Living becomes a guide for the seeker. There are many reflective discourses by him.  The Space Within by Sri Sri Ravi Shankar is truly inspiring. You can keep yourself updated with the latest on meditation by subscribing to  the monthly Rishimukh magazine, published by the Art of Living Foundation.

Gift #6: Meditation Mat

Yoga makes meditation deeper especially if it precedes meditation. For this a Roll out and roll in mat makes the experience comfortable and enjoyable.  One can even opt for a soft mat that can be folded and kept aside.  Mats serve a two-in-one purpose as they promise physical and mental well being when used daily.

Gift #7: Sahaj Samadhi Course

Sponsoring a meditation course to a stressed out buddy is perhaps the best virtue in action. It’s like a life time key to good mental health and quality life. The Art of Meditation Course (traditionally known as Sahaj Samadhi Meditation) is a simple yet most effective way to make a journey within to realize the beauty of the self and life. It is a mantra based meditation. It is an effortless way to de-stress and get rid of uncomfortable queasy feelings that accompany jet lag or a sleepless night.

Gift #8: A Meditation Shawl

Who wouldn’t like the warmth and comfort of a soft cashmere shawl while meditating? It is like being enveloped with a cozy sheath that helps to slip into deep meditation.

Gift #9: A Guided Meditation CD

A guided meditation CD promises the heavenly experience in our comfort zone. You can gift your friend CDs that introduce the world of peace through meditation.

Gift #10: A Sponsored Spiritual Journey

This is an exciting journey that promises great ambience in the lap of nature and takes a person to a spiritual destination. It promises an inward journey that introduces us to peace and happiness.

Happy Gifting

Basic Yoga Stretch for Flexibility | Yoga Cradle Rock

Basic Yoga Exercise for Flexibility

One of the most important basic yoga sets on this website, is the Yoga for Meditation Set.  It is part of the Silent Mind Meditation Program, which is the essence of my personal meditation practice, and details the Silent Mind Meditation Technique, which in my view is the ultimate meditation practice.

This Yoga for Meditation set is excellent for those looking to improve their flexibility, especially the flexibility of their lower body, which is essential if you are going to sit for long periods of meditation.  It consists of some great basic yoga stretches which should be a part of every yogi’s toolbox.  But, of all the great flexibility improving yoga poses that are a part of this set, there is one that is key for those who are keen on sitting more comfortably.  That is Yoga Cradle Rock.

Yoga Cradle Rock, is a basic yoga stretch which one is usually taught early in their yoga training.  It is from the school of Hatha Yoga, but is used by most other types of yoga as well.

As simple as this yoga exercise is, it is really a difficult one to describe in words and an illustration demonstrating how to do this pose correctly is long long overdue.  So first, many apologies for those who have been waiting patiently for an illustration, but I am happy to announce that you wait is now over as I have gotten Trupti to do this demonstration for us and you will find those illustrations below.

More Basic Yoga Exercises and Stretches:

You will find plenty more basic and advanced yoga stretches and exercises in the following 2 free online collections – Free Hatha Yoga Galleries and Free Kundalini Yoga Exercises.

For Yoga and Meditation Certification Program Students:

For students enrolled in the Online Yoga Teacher’s Training and Certification Program or Online Meditation Certification Program, this is a great exercise to do early in your class, as it will help your students sit comfortably for any meditation or sitting poses you plan to do.  Also, as this is a relatively easy exercise to do, almost all students can practice it.

Basic Yoga Stretch – Yoga Cradle Rock

Below please find details of how to practice Yoga Cradle Rock, along with illustrations, step-by-step instructions, benefits and practice tips.  Please note the cautions regarding your knees when doing this exerise.

Yoga Cradle Rock Illustrations

Cradle Rock Front – Illustration #1

Cradle Rock Side View – Arm Position – Illustration #2

Cradle Rock Side Full – Illustration #3

A. How to Yoga Cradle Rock:

  • Sit with your legs extended.
  • Next bend your left leg at the knee and cradle it with left art as shown in Illustration #2.  To cradle the leg hold onto the left leg with your left arm from underneath (your left elbow will be on the inside of the knee joint and you will be holding your left foot from the outside).

Now with your right hand hold the left foot as shown in Illustration #3.  This is the basic position you take and you can now begin to do the movement.

  • Now rock your leg back and forth bringing the ankle towards your chin.  Make sure you rock gently and not put too much pressure on the knee joint or the hip joint.  You will be able to accentuate the movement as your hips start to open up and you start to warm up.

  • Once you are done with the left leg, repeat with the right leg.

  • You can do this exercise with normal breathing or if you are ready you can do it which practicing the Breath of Fire.

B. How Much To Do:

  • As with any stretching exercises, it is important to do it for a few minutes to really reap the benefits.  So with cradle rock I would suggest 1-3 minutes per leg.

C. Basic Yoga Cradle Rock Benefits:

  • Helps open up your hips and increases the flexibility and health of this region.
  • Helps improve the flexibility and health of the knee joints.
  • Overall is excellent for those who wish to meditate as it helps you sit in the traditional cross legged postures.  For those who aspire to sit in half-lotus or full-lotus, this exercise is a must do.

D. Practice Tips for Yoga Cradle Rock:

  • Be sure not to overstrain your joints, especially your hips and knees when doing this exercise.
  • You can also do 3 rounds of this exercise, switching legs in between each round.  It is a good way to extract maximum benefit from this key pose.
  • Do this pose prior to sitting for your daily meditation (which I am sure all of you are doing :-), to help you sit more comfortably.
  • I suggest doing this exercise regularly, if you are keen on sitting for long periods of time.

PS: If you enjoy this exercise or any other exercise on Mastery of Meditation and Yoga, please do share them with your friends.  I appreciate your support.

8 Steps Ayurvedic Treatment for Addiction and More – Part 1

by Rajiv Parti, MD (aka Dr. Raj )

Ayurveda’s treatment for addiction recovery is a process: a lifestyle and a journey into wellness. It is an invitation to participate in our own wellness and healing, to co-create our full potential and to live every future day with a commitment to nurturing and valuing ourselves.

Ayurveda is a whole person non-invasive, non-pharmaceutical approach aimed at perfect balance – not a method in which we become pharmaceutically dependent patients. It teaches that all material forms in the entire Universe – including the human being – are made up of different combinations of five essential elements, the Mahabhutas. These Mahabhutas are: Space, Air, Fire, Water, and Earth.

Differing combinations of these essential elements create an infinity of material forms: differentiating a flower from a river, a mountain from a cloud, a human being from a star; But every material thing contains a combination of these elements – the cosmos and we are made of the same materials.

Ayurveda teaches that in human beings there are three dominant combinations of these elements that give us each our specific body mind constitutions: these three constitutions are called ‘doshas’, each one of the representing a vital dose of the essential elements in our own individual make up: Vata (the Air element), Pitta (the Fire element) and Kapha (the Earth element):

1. STEP ONE: Identifying the Doshas

Typically each one of us will have a dominant dosha that determines our over riding body mind constitution. We can be categorized as a planet of Vata types, Pitta types or Khapha types – and our inclinations, capacities and nature will be determined by our dosha.

Vata types tend to be highly creative, quick thinking, quick to learn and forget, lean, physically and mentally agile, involved in many things at one time, and prone to anxiety and overwhelm.

Pitta types tend to be leaders, extremely focused, goal oriented, driven physically and mentally and prone to bouts of anger, possible aggression, frustration and impatience.

Kapha types tend to placid, easy going, slower and heavier physically and prone to being anxious to avoid conflict, and experiencing mental and physical inertia or fatigue.

When the doshas are in perfect balance, we humans are well, functioning optimally, mentally and physically, living with vitality and in ease. When the doshas are disturbed, our wellbeing is obstructed, our mental and physical functioning is impaired, and we will live with fatigue and dis-ease.

At the heart of all Ayurvedic treatments therefore is the intention to restore balance to the doshas. Once this is achieved, wellness flows naturally.

Having diagnosed the individual’s dosha type and which doshas are experiencing stress, treatment will now focus on the removal of the stress.

For this the therapeutic practices of Ayurveda center on creating restfulness, restoring calmness, nurturing the body-mind. The mind, and the subtle energy of the body-mind are all equal targets for therapeutic applications.

What you can do at home:

1. Find out your Dosha at http://doshaquiz.chopra.com/

Creating a stress free zone to allow the doshas to come in to natural balance, and support the individual’s natural intelligence at the physical, emotional and mental levels to re-emerge then becomes the foundation for all further treatments.

2. STEP 2 : Rebuilding the Body: Re-storing – Ojas

The Ayurvedic texts identify a substance called ‘Ojas’ as being the vital force of the body. Like honey is the essence of flowers, in the same way, Ojas is considered to be a secreted essence from our tissues, muscles, blood, plasma, fats and bones: produced by all healthy cells, imparting strength, radiance, luster, and power to the body and mind.

In addiction, this Ojas is being continually depleted – and ultimately the depletion of Ojas will eventually cause death. One of the main areas of focus therefore is restore Ojas in the body.

Ojas is mainly cultivated through diet – the useful product of food materials.

Therefore in Ayurveda, there is a major emphasis on diet.

Treatment should center around foods that support the restoration of Ojas, and also support  sup: green vegetables, kale, parsley, spinach, rice, honey, almonds, strawberries, mangos, split mung lentils, amaranth, cooked lightly in spices that are also Ojas enhancing: cumin, coriander, ginger, fennel, cinnamon.

What can you do at home:

1. Cut out foods that are processed or pre-cooked

2. Stock up on lots and lots of green leafy vegetables

3. Try cooking with fresh spices: fennel or cinnamon or ginger

3. STEP 3: Restoring Natural Intelligence : Cultivating Tejas

Vitality in Ayurveda is not something that occurs only in the body. Tejas is the radiant vitality of the body-mind’s innate intelligence: the intelligence by which our cells innately perform a myriad of miracles – carrying oxygen molecules in our blood or releasing neurotransmitters or metabolizing nutrients from foods and identifying waste materials – simultaneously, continuously. Tejas is also the means by with which we can digest and process mental thoughts and impressions, and experience higher perceptual capacities;

Having strong Tejas therefore gives us digestive and information processing power at the mental and physical levels: cellular metabolic energy.

Restoring Tejas would involve calming the nervous system, through a variety of techniques that involve Panchakarma  (a series of detoxification and purification therapies) and ‘Rasayana’ – the practice of destroying disease through the conservation transformation and revitalization of energy.

(see step 4)

4. STEP FOUR: Detoxification and Purification: Panchakarma

Pancha means ‘five’ in Sanskrit and ‘karma’ means action.

Panchakarma is a unique set of five detoxifying Ayurvedic treatments administered in three phases: the preparation, cleansing, and rejuvenation phases.

The first phase is oleation – ingesting and applying pure essential oils in order to mobilize the accumulated toxins in the body. The first of the five actions of Panchakarma here is ‘Swedana’ – the application of hot steam and warm oil therapies that loosen toxins and encourage their flow to the GI tract for elimination.

The second phase is the cleansing phase: now that toxins have been mobilized, their elimination is focused upon through a further three actions, all of which are administered gently through the application of medicinal herbal oils: Basti (intestinal irrigation); Nasya (nasal irrigation) and Vamana (oral elimination)

The final phase of Panchakarma is Rasayana: here medicinal and Ayurvedic oils are applied in uniquely restorative bodywork and massage techniques. Most famous of these is the practice of ‘Shirodhana’ – where warm oil is poured continuously on to the center of the forehead between the two eyes: acting as a powerful pacificier for the entire nervous system.

Further Rasayana would be pursued through Ayurvedic herb prescriptions using the healing properties of plants and flowers, for example:

Ashwaghandha – proven in some 216 medical to: confer immune system protection, combat the effects of stress, improve learning, memory, and reaction time, reduce anxiety and depression without causing drowsiness, reduce brain-cell degeneration.

Guggulu – purifying herbs. It cleanses unhealthy tissues, increases the white blood cell count and rejuvenates the

Brahmi – nerve tonic

Ayurvedic teas and tonics would be included in the diet every day to enhance healing, reduce stress for the rebuilding of tissues: pumpkin is a known sedative, nutmeg is a nervine, and chamomile is a digestive tonic and known sedative nervine herb.

What You Can Do At Home:

1. You can order many of these herbs and teas are available at reputable herbalists, and my own favorite source for these is at world center of excellence, with whom I have personally trained, The Chopra Center: http://store.chopra.com/showitems.asp?deptcode1=717
