Famous Osho Quotes: An Indian Mystic, Guru and Spiritual Leader

Today we will share some wonderful Osho Quotes with you. These quotes are designed to remind us of the deeper truths of life, as well as inspire and uplift you.

A controversial figure to say the least, Osho – also known as Bhagwan Shree Rajneesh – was an Indian mystic, guru and spiritual leader with an international following. He was permissive on sex, kicked out of the USA on immigration charges after run-ins with the locals when he tried to establish an ashram in Oregon, and known for pulling no punches when it came to re-interpreting spiritual texts. He even had a go at Ghandi a few times…

Since his death in 1990, he’s only gained in infamy – his Poona-based ashram is still running, now named Osho’s International Meditation Resort. He may be the only spiritual leader to commission a set of tarot cards – Osho Cards – and create an extra card called The Master depicting himself.

One thing to always keen in mind though is that the teachings are much more important than the teacher.  So forget the teacher if you have to, but always remember the teachings.

Osho Quote 2

A man of realization knows there is no death. Death is a fiction, you have never died. Yes, you have changed your form many times. You have changed your house many times, many times. But you have never died. Have you ever seen yourself dying? It is always somebody else who dies. – Osho

Osho Quote 3

Don’t be attached to the things of the world, and don’t be attached to the things of the other world, because things are things. It makes no difference whether they are of this world or the other world – attachment is the problem.

Osho Quote 4

Wisdom is only possible in the absence of the ego. Ego is the hiding place of all kinds of ignorance. It is a shelter for ignorance. It prevents you from bringing light into your being. It is afraid of the light because the moment light comes it will have to go, it will have to leave. – Osho

Osho Quote 5

If you live with alertness, you live rightly.
If you live in imitation, you live wrongly.
To me there is only one sin:
And that is not to be yourself.
And to me there is only one virtue:
And that is to know yourself. – Osho

How to Be Free | Osho on Krishna, Buddha and You

Osho Quote on Krishna, Buddha and You

How to Be Free

Today I would like to share with you an excerpt from Mystic Master Osho, in which he urges you to just be yourself, be original and follow your heart’s whispers.  It is always inspiring to visit the teachings of the masters from time to time, as I find the vibrations of their words and insights to often be catalysts for spontaneous and sudden inner transformation.  I hope you find the words below to be equally inspiring, liberating and transforming.

Free Osho on Krishna, Buddha

Osho Quote on Krishna, Buddha and You:

Book: Courage – The Joy of Living Dangerously

The whole art for the new humanity will consist in the secret of listening to the heart consciously, alertly, attentively.  And follow it, to wherever it takes you.  Yes, sometimes it will take you into dangers – but remember, those dangers are needed to make you ripe.  Sometimes it will take you astray – but remember again, those goings astray are part of growth.  Many times you will fall – rise up again, because this is how one gathers strength, by falling and rising again.  This is how one become integrated.

Never be an imitator, be always original.  Don’t become a carbon copy.  But that’s what is happening all over the world – carbon copied and carbon copies.

Life is really a dance if you are an original – and you are meant to be an original.  Just look how different Krishna is from Buddha.  If Krishna had followed Buddha, we would have missed one of the most beautiful men of this earth.  Or if Buddha had followed Krishna, he would have been just a poor specimen.  Just think of Buddha playing on the flute! – he would have disturbed many peoples sleep, he was not a flute player.  Just think of Buddha dancing; it looks so ridiculous, just absurd.

And the same is the case for Krishna.  Sitting underneath a tree with no flute, with no crown of peacock feathers, with no beautiful clothes – just sitting like a beggar under a tree with closed eyes, nobody dancing around him, nothing of the dance, nothing of the song – and Krishna would look so poor, so impoverished.  A Buddha is a Buddha, a Krishna is a Krishna, and you are you.  And you are not in any way less than anybody else.  Respect yourself, respect your inner voice and follow it.

And remember, I am not guaranteeing you that it will always lead your to the right.  Many times it will take you to the wrong, because to come to the right door one has to knock first on many wrong doors.  That’s how it is.  If you suddenly stumble upon the right door, you will not be able to recognize that it is right.  So remember in the ultimate reckoning no effort is ever wasted; all efforts contribute to the ultimate climax of your growth.

Analysis of Osho Quote on Krishna, Buddha and You:

There are few points I want to highlight from the above excerpt which I think are very helpful to one’s spiritual evolution.

1. Embrace the Unknown:

Hidden in the above message, is the profound guidance that you should be open to life and be willing to go where she wants to take you.  That is what it means to follow your heart.  It means to not always take the safe, secure route, but be willing to try new things and new adventures, despite having no guarantees of success.

This will allow you to move into the new, and not be imprisoned by the insecurities of the ego.  For the ego is of the past and is ever seeking security and safety.  So to move into the new, is to move into life, is to move into insecurity,  it is to move into the now, it is to move away from the entrapments of the petty self, and ultimately you will discover, that it is to move into love.

Be open to going with the flow, else you will stagnate and be dead, even while being alive.

2. You are not less:

This is really a remarkable lesson to learn and fully embracing this Truth is liberating and empowering.  Don’t compare or try to be like anyone, you are unique and wonderful, just come into your own.  Just be yourself.  Then everything you do will come from the depths of your being.  You will contribute in your own unique way.  That is the responsibility of those who have tasted the Truth.  To contribute to spreading the light in their own way and in their own words.  As Krishnamurti advises those who are teachers and spiritual guides, “You Speak.”  That is enough.

As Ramana Maharishi points you, feeling incomplete is the essence of the problem and this incompleteness has its roots in comparison.  Comparison between you and the “great ones” and comparisons between “what is” and “what should be”.  This is the root cause of missing the inherent perfection of the here and now.  The answer is to simply let go.

Interesting Osho Quote on Enlightenment

Summary: Continuing with the series on how various teachings and masters of meditation view enlightenment, this article looks at how Mystic Master Osho (Rajneesh) brilliantly defines what enlightenment is.  You will find the first entry of this series here, Zen Definition of Enlightenment.

Osho Quote on Spiritual Enlightenment

What is Enlightenment?

There are many different definitions of Enlightenment.  Such as, seeing the oneness of everything, seeing yourself and God as one, seeing the false nature of a separate self, encountering your blissful nature, spontaneous action, etc, etc.  These definitions are all good, but there is one that I think is more helpful than these.  It is a particular way that the great mystic master Osho (Rajneesh) describes it and below I would like to discuss this perspective with you.

The problem with trying to define enlightenment, is that enlightenment is not a fixed point.  There have been countless enlightenment experiences in the history of man, and hopefully, there will be countless more, and the one thing that will stand out is the great variety of these experiences.  In my own experience, enlightenment episodes, awakenings and states have had enormous variety, and if you are interested you can read about a few of these that I have shared with you here, Anmol’s Journal – Enlightenment Experiences.  There is, of course, also the question of whether enlightenment should even be defined in the context of an experience?

Osho-Quote

Given the above, here is Osho’s perspective on enlightenment, which I think is a rather nice way to look at it.  He says,  “Enlightenment is the reward for watching yourself in action”.  That’s it.  This definition is quite ingenious and from it the following can be understood regarding enlightenment.

Enlightenment is a reward.  Nothing more needs to be said about what it is.  Rewards are generally good to get and the same holds true here.  Always nice to be rewarded with enlightened :-).  Further a reward is given to you, you cannot acquire it.  This is very important to understand.  Chasing enlightenment is futile.  You can chase it all you like, but you cannot summon it.  It is beyond your volition and will.  It simply comes to you, when it comes to you.  That being said, this definition does assign you with a great task.

“Enlightenment is the reward for watching yourself in action”.  That is what you must do.  You need to watch yourself like a hawk.  This watching can be understood as observing all three dimensions of yourself in action.  The physical, emotional and mental dimensions.  You job is to watch these 3 dimensions of yourself as you go through life.  That’s it.  That is your job.  Be aware of whatsoever you are doing, feeling and thinking as best you can.  If you can do this, life will be pleased and the reward of enlightenment may be presented to you.  It’s simple, yet it’s hard.

Inspiring Osho Quote on How to Live Courageously

Osho on Courage

On Mastery of Meditation, Friday is for articles about the Spiritual Blogsphere and the thoughts of other Masters of Meditation.  Who better to kick off this new schedule that the great mystic master Osho.  I hope you find the following exerpt from Osho (Rajneesh) on courage as inspiring as I did.  Enjoy…

Title:         Courage – The Joy of Living Dangerously
Author:      Osho
Chapter:    The Way of the Heart

“The word courage is very interesting.  It comes from a Latin root cor, which means ‘heart’.  So to be courageous means to live with the heart.  And weaklings, only weaklings, live with the head; afraid, they create a security of logic around themselves.  Fearful, they close every window and door – with theology, concepts, words, theories – and inside those closed doors and windows, they hide.

Osho-Quote

The way of the heart is the way of courage.  It is to live in insecurity; it is to live in love, and trust; it is to move in the unknown.  It is leaving the past and allowing the future to be.  Courage is to move on dangerous paths.  Life is dangerous, and only cowards can avoid the danger – but then, they are already dead.  A person who is alive, really alive, vitally alive, will always move into the unknown.  There is danger there, but he will take the risk.  The heart is always ready to take the risk, the heart is a gambler.  The head is a businessman.  The head always calculates – it is cunning.  The heart is non-calculating.”

The 3 most important aspects of courage I think to take away from this quote are…

1. Courage is Not Fearlessness:  That’s right.  Since you are going to be dealing with the unknown and with uncertainly, there is bound to be apprehension.  That’s ok.  Courage is to move forward despite this fear.  So don’t feel like you lack courage simply because you have fear.  Look at the fear as an opportunity to exercise your courage muscle.  As Osho would put it, embrace uncertainty.

2. Listen to the Heart, Not the Mind: In the article How to Escape Your Suffering: The Blind Man vs. The Cripple I went into this point where your guide ought to be your heart and not your mind.  The mind will endlessly battle for security, it will wobble between the pros and cons.  The heart, on the other hand, will help you to jump into the great unknown and help you to be true to your passions.

3. Courage Allows you to Live in the Present:  This is the essence of courage.  To allow the unknown future to take shape and be willing to move out of the mind and into the moment.  So instead of trying to manipulate life to avoid uncertainty, simply take an innocent attitude instead.  There are no guarantees here that things will go right, there is only danger and mystery, courage means to be willing to go forward nonetheless.

Osho Quote On Happiness & Simply Being Yourself

The following inspiring quote is from the great Mystic Master Osho (Rajneesh).

“Look at the trees, look at the birds, look at the clouds, look at the stars… and if you have eyes you will be able to see that the whole existence is joyful. Everything is simply happy. Trees are happy for no reason; they are not going to become prime ministers or presidents and they are not going to become rich and they will never have any bank balance. Look at the flowers – for no reason. It is simply unbelievable how happy flowers are.”

Happiness & Simply Being Yourself

FUNDAMENTALLY JUST HAPPY!  Remember this statement.  It is the reward of a meditative life.  It is important here to differentiate between pleasure and happiness.  Pleasure being something derived through some cause, and by happiness here meaning a state of joy without any cause.  This joyfulness naturally emerges.  It starts to flow from deep within and in it you simply rejoice and celebrate life.

This happiness comes when you simply reside as yourself.  The trees are not only not trying to become prime ministers, they are also not trying to become the stars and the stars are not trying to become flowers.  They are all residing as themselves.  Thus, there is freedom from comparison and freedom from chasing “the other”.  There is no sense of feeling “less” or something lacking, which is brought about through the insanity of measuring against some fictitious ideal, or another.  This means that you don’t have to try to become something other than who you are.  In Zen speak – the frog becomes the frog.

If fundamental happiness was not enough, one more most beautiful thing starts to happen when you reside as yourself and joy starts to spontaneously flow… it gives birth to the miracle of Love.

My Time at an Osho Retreat When My Body Disappeared

Osho Retreat Experiences:

There is a wonderful Osho (Bagwan Shree Rajneesh) retreat that takes place here in upstate New York, it is one that I have, unfortunately, only been able to attend once, but what an experience that was!  I am not a “sannyas”, meaning someone who has formally joined his organization, but I do find his books very inspiring and insightful.  In fact one of the first books I read was “The Alpha and the Omega”, which really propelled me onto this path of meditation and yoga.  After that I discovered Jiddu Krishnamurti’s “Network of Thought” and then there was no turning back — I had reached terminal velocity and was well past the point of no return.

An Osho retreat, if they are all like the one I attended, is really something out of this world and worth attending if you have the opportunity.  This retreat was held at a mystical Sufi Ashram up the mountains of upstate New York and they could not have picked a better location.  The ashram was surrounded by quiet hills and just being there created a sense of serenity and depth within.  We arrived and checked in on a Friday evening and soon after everyone had settled in, the party began.  The program was packed with Osho’s famous guided meditations.  There was Osho’s Dynamic Meditation, Osho’s Kundalini Meditation, Movement as Meditation, among others… and if you know anything about Osho’s meditations you know they involve a lot of music and lot of dancing.  Since I love both immensely, the whole weekend was like one huge celebration of energy and spirit.

Osho Retreat

Now, before you get the idea that the retreat was like hitting the local nightclub, let me warn you it was very demanding.  Osho’s meditations are physically challenging.  They are designed to break down deep rooted patterns and ignite one’s awareness.  The meditations use a great deal of breath and movement to force a catharsis of anything repressed, so that space is created within for meditation to occur.  During my time there and soon afterwards several astonishing experiences took place.  Of these here is one that was particularly interesting and insightful.

It was during the later part of Saturday evening’s meditation program.  We had just completed, what must have been hours of physical meditation and dance, and were viewing some of Osho’s video commentaries and getting some much needed rest.  I had found a comfortable floor chair and was cherishing this period of relaxation, when I was taken aback by what started to transpire.  My physical body began to disappear from my field of awareness.  At first some parts began to vanish, then shortly thereafter, the whole body was gone.  I was just a witness to what was transpiring.  The experience was not at all scary though, in fact it was quite pleasant and most of all very intriguing.  As I became more comfortable with this unusual state of consciousness I actually began to experiment with it.  I tried to mentally find my body, locate it in time and space, but it had completely disappeared from my field of awareness.  I was unable to rediscover it no matter what I tried.  I was no longer a physical creature in any shape or from.  I was just energy, just awareness.  Eventually, on its own accord the body returned, or better said I returned to my body.

This experience gave me deep insight into the nature of our reality and consciousness.  It also helped me understand first hand what Osho was trying to accomplish with his meditations.  His meditations always work to empty your mind and body, and then require you to remain vitally aware and wait for what life might bestow on you.  This is exactly how it happened.  The meditations purged me of all the junk I was holding within, and then unexpectedly, while just relaxing, consciousness shifted to a different dimension of being and awareness.  For those looking to try Osho’s meditations I will provide some of them on this website as well, but until then you can grab one his books, or better still, attend one of his retreats.  I mean, what can be so bad about dancing your butt off while at the same time, discovering what your True Nature really is.

For those in the Northeastern US who wish to attend this retreat you will want to keep an eye on Osho Padma Meditation Center in NY.  This is where I found out about the retreat, I believe the person running this center is Ma Satya Priya.  The retreat, by the way, is usually during Halloween weekend, which is just perfect as for once you get to take your masks off, instead of putting more on :-).  I might go again this year if they hold it.  The center also runs several weekly Osho Meditations, I have not attended those (as I am not in that vicinity), so if you wish to try it out, you can check out their schedule on the website.  Do let me know your feedback if you attend.  Other Osho websites you may want to explore are: Osho Home Page, Osho World Vision of Enlightenment and Friends of Osho.  Enjoy!

Inspirational Quotes from the ‘Father of the Nation’, Nelson Mandela

It seems appropriate in the wake of his recent death to take some time to look at a few of the great things that Nelson Mandela said – many of which pertain to yoga, meditation and the self.

Often called Father of the Nation, Nelson Mandela was born into the Thembu Royal Family. He studied law at university and was politically active as a young man. It was these activities that led to him being charged with conspiracy to overthrow the state, and thrown in prison for 27 years.

He was finally released in 1990 and joined negotiations with President F. W. de Klerk to end apartheid in South Africa. In 1994 he was elected South Africa’s first black President. He declined standing for a second term, but continued his involvement in international politics.

Nelson Mandela died on December 5, 2013.

Inspirational Quotes from Nelson Mandela

“As I walked out the door toward the gate that would lead to my freedom, I knew if I didn’t leave my bitterness and hatred behind, I’d still be in prison.”

“Those who conduct themselves with morality, integrity and consistency need not fear the forces of inhumanity and cruelty.”

“There is nothing like returning to a place that remains unchanged to find the ways in which you yourself have altered.”

“Do not judge me by my successes, judge me by how many times I fell down and got back up again.”
“As I have said, the first thing is to be honest with yourself. You can never have an impact on society if you have not changed yourself… Great peacemakers are all people of integrity, of honesty, but humility.”

“There is no easy walk to freedom anywhere, and many of us will have to pass through the valley of the shadow of death again and again before we reach the mountaintop of our desires.”
