September Yoga Exercises for Nerves of Steel

Fitness and Yoga

Exercises for Nerve Strength

Real fitness, as per Yoga, is not just physical strength and endurance, but is actually nerve strength and pranic (life-force/chi) capacity.  In other words, how strong your nervous system is, how much current (Kundalini) can it handle and how well it holds up under stress, is how yoga measures your level of fitness and conditioning.

So for the month of September, let us develop this key aspect of our being, so we can proclaim ourselves to be yoga fit.  To do this, you will find below an excellent hatha yoga pose known to help develop nerve strength and an excellent yoga breathing exercise to expand your pranic capacity and build your entire nervous system.

The yoga pose we will practice together is called Downward Facing Dog, while the breathing exercise is Anuloma Viloma pranayama.  I will specify the variations to use for both these techniques, in order to extract the maximum nerve fitness from them that we can.

Yoga Exercise for Nerve Fitness:

One of the most popular and common yoga technique is Yoga Mountain Pose or Downward Facing Dog.  This exercise is excellent for a variety of reasons, not the least of which is it’s benefit to the nervous system.  This pose is part of all schools of yoga, including Hatha Yoga and Kundalini Yoga.

For our purposes I want you to practice this pose using powerful Breath of Fire.  This will further increase the benefits of Downward Facing Dog for nerve fitness and Pranic Power.  In addition, if your arms or legs tire, take a break, continue the Breath of Fire if you can and then come into the pose once again. You may repeat that several time if necessary.

Here is the link to the full article for Downward Facing Dog –  Hatha Yoga Pose for Nerve Fitness.

Downward Facing Dog for Nerve Power

Yoga Pranayama for Pranic Fitness:

In conjunction with Downward Facing Dog, I suggest you incorporate Anuloma Viloma Pranayama into your practice as well.  This breathing exercise purifies, refines and strengthens your nervous system and increases your respiratory fitness.  It gives you more prana and great internal balance.

To maximize the pranic fitness you extract from this technique, I want you to try the 1:2 inhalation/exhalation ratio I have described in the article.  So for every count of inhalation, extend the exhalation to double the length.  So for 4 counts of inhalation, make the exhalation phase 8 counts.  This elongated exhalation will expand your nervous system even more rapidly.

Here is the link to the entire article on Anuloma Viloma Pranayama: Chakra Balancing Breathing Exercise.

Also, here is a video demonstrating this wonderful breathing technique:

So for this month, let’s work together to get our internal systems fit and strong.  Having a strong nervous system, means you can function with greater energy, vitality and composure.

Powerful Yoga for Bulding Self Confidence | June Exercises

Courage and Self Esteem

Self Belief and Fearlessness

Self Confidence is a key, not just for success in manifestation, but also a key for making genuine spiritual progress.  We all know the important part confidence plays in ordinary life, allowing you to make great strides in your personal development, career, relationships, etc, but in the spiritual realm self confidence is equally important.  In the spiritual realm you have to have confidence in your ability to work your way through the illusion of duality and the ensuing suffering, and the self belief that you will be able to find your way out of the chaos.  At the end of day, as I have often said, enlightenment is a path walked alone.

So how can we build our self confidence?  What can we do to develop our courage and self belief so we can be fearless in our approach to life?  There are many methods and techniques for building this kind of confidence, and in this article I will give you some yoga and meditation approaches to achieve this goal.

These techniques for building self confidence will be the yoga poses for the month of June and will be part of our yoga practice for the month series.  For those who are new to the blog, each month we practice together a particular yoga exercise, pranayama technique and meditation, in order to enhance our skills and learn from each other.  We share our experiences in the comments section below as well.  So join us this month and experience the burst in confidence that this month’s techniques will produce.

Yoga Exercise for Building Self Confidence:

One of the most popular poses from Kundalini Yoga is Archer Pose and this is the favorite for those warrior yogis looking to boost their course and confidence.  This pose is not suggested for ego maniacs as it is just gonna make their heads swell even more , but if you are looking to give your inner strength a boost, there is no better technique than Archer’s Pose.

Remember that the biggest aspect of confidence, course and fear is psychological, so as you do this pose and breathe fiercely, engage your mind in helping you grow your self belief and power.  With every breath feel yourself expanding and growing more powerful, more focused, more strong and more resolute.  Done regularly it will help break the patterns of negative thinking and self doubt.  Practice this pose like you are a Warrior Saint.

Here is the link for Archer Pose for Building Confidence and Self Esteem.

Archer Pose for Power and Confidence

Bhastrika Pranayama for Energy and Vitality:

Another aspect of self confidence is having a healthy body and having lots of energy.  Feeling energetic and healthy will give you a psychological boost and this will translate to you having more confidence.  This particular yoga breathing exercise is excellent for helping you build a more energetic body.  In addition, Bhastika Pranayama can boost your metabolism, help you detox, increase your lung capacity and also help you burn fat.  All of these blessings, especially looking and feeling better, also contribute to having more confidence and power.

Here is the link to this wonderful exercise: Bhastrika Pranayama to Burn Fat and More

Smiling Buddha Meditation for Happiness and Confidence:

Along with looking good and feeling healthy, feeling happy also helps boost confidence, and one of the best meditations for doing this is the meditation supposedly prescribed to the Buddha to cheer him up, the Smiling Buddha Meditation for Happiness and Confidence.  Remember to do this meditation with a smile and not allow negative thinking to bring you down.

So for this month, if you need to build your self confidence, go ahead and try the three techniques above.  Remember though that it is not about having a big ego, but it is about having faith in yourself that you can achieve here in life all that which you were meant to do.

Anger Management Quick Fix Yoga Technique

Anger Management Technique

How to Be Free from Anger

There are some excellent techniques in yoga and ayurveda to help you deal with anger issues and help you free yourself from anger.  Anger, as I have mentioned previously, is simply energy and many of the problems that anger leads to is due to the storm of powerful egocentric and aggressive thoughts that arise as a result of it.  For long term peace and tranquility there is nothing better that meditation for dealing with anger.  Techniques such as Zen Meditation Technique, So Hum Mantra Meditation or Smiling Buddha Meditation for Happiness are great for this.  But, a more active and immediate method for dissipating anger and finding the calm within comes from the school Kundalini Yoga.

anger management

Before jumping into this technique let me point out some of the other articles on the website which also provide ways to deal with anger successfully.  From Yoga Therapy there is the technique described here, Anger Management with Yoga Therapy.  From the healing school of Ayurveda there are the following breathing exercises which are excellent for cooling the system and pacifying anger and irritation, Sheetali Pranayama for Anger and Stress Mangement and Seetkari Pranayama to Lower Blood Pressure.  Feel free to try these, or combine them with the meditations above and the exercise below to create a nice anger management program for yourself.

If you are new to yoga, please be sure to follow the guidelines on how to practice yoga which I have detailed in the following 2 articles, Beginner’s Guide to Yoga Practice and Guidelines for Kundalini Yoga Practice.

Anger Management Kundalini Yoga Exercise:

a. Instructions for practicing Anger Release Technique:

This technique is quite simple to practice and it’s design is to help you get rid of the anger that is within consciously and then find the peaceful and infinite dimension of you being to promote calm and tranquility.

  • Sit up straight.  You can do this exercise sitting on the floor cross legged, sitting up on your heels in rock pose or even sitting on a stool.
  • Now close your eyes and allow any anger within you, suppressed or otherwise, to rise up so you can get rid of it.
  • Next, remain angry, make fists, extend one arm out and start to punch forward with alternating fists.  So as one arm punches forward, the other retreats.  Breathe furiously as you do this.  Allow all the anger energy to be consumed by your vigorous punching.  Keep going if you feel there is more irritation or rage energy you need to get rid of.  You your breath of help you keep going.
  • After completing the exercise lower your arms and relax completely.  Put a gentle smile on your face and bring your awareness to your breath.  Breathe into your heart center and out from your heart center.  So feel each breath moving into the center of your chest and each breath emerging from there and flowing out.  The heart center or Anahata Chakra, is the seat of love and forgiveness and this exercise and subsequent breathing will help open and balance this center for you.  Feel love, affection and forgiveness start to flow.
  •  Remain in this way, calm and peaceful for as long as you like.

b. Duration for Anger Management Technique:

  • You can do the active portion of this exercise for 15 seconds to 3 minutes.  You can do the breathing in and out of the Heart Center for as long as you like.

c. Benefits of Anger Release Exercise:

  • Helps release suppressed anger, irritation and frustration.
  • Helps one consciously learn to release and be free from anger.
  • Helps to overcome hurts and frustration.
  • Helps bestow peace and tranquility.
  • Helps to tone the chest and shoulders.

d. Practice Tips for Anger Management Exercise:

  • Don’t be afraid to get angry when doing this practice.
  • In general, don’t judge yourself when you get angry.  We all get angry and there is nothing wrong with that, it is ok.  Just learn to observe anger when it does arise and don’t get swept away with the ego empowering, hateful, negative thoughts that anger ignites.  Instead, try to use this opportunity to practice forgiveness and love.
  • The real sign of a yogi or monk is keeping their composure and equanimity when faced with stressful and upsetting situations.  So use those situations to practice Mindfulness and use these situations as opportunity for spiritual growth.

Hand Yoga Gestures | Free Comprehensive Illustrated Guide

Hand Yoga Gestures

Free Hand Yoga Illustrations

In part 1 of this series I detailed 5 important Yoga Mudras for you, which I will include in this Free Comprehensive Guide to Hand Yoga.  So below you will find Yoga Mudras Part 1 and following it are more illustrations and details of yoga hand positions and how they can enhance your personal spiritual practice.  In the future, as I add more yoga mudras to the website, I will include them here in this guide so you have complete access to this wonderful science all in one place.

Yoga Mudras

An important aspect of yoga is the subtle, but key practice of hand, body and eye postures, to invoke certain flows of energy and create certain states of consciousness, called yoga mudras, hand yoga or hand yoga gestures.  In last month’s newsletter I introduced you all to yoga mudras and provided 5 important mudras to start with.  In the newsletter I also mentioned I would be creating a comprehensive guide to yoga hand gestures, and here now is that guide.

Hand Yoga Gestures

What exactly is Hand Yoga or Mudras?

Mudras are hand, body or eye positions that facilitate certain energy flows in the body and by forming these mudras you can induce certain states of mind and consciousness.  Many of the meditation and yoga techniques on this website utilize mudras and mudras are a key part of yogic technology.

Hand yoga gestures generally work by preventing the dissipation of prana (life-force) from the fingertips.  In order to do this, one brings the fingers together in various ways, which helps create certain subtle energy circuits.  These circuits then channel prana along particular pathways to affect the mind/body complex in specific ways.

Although their effects are subtle, the changes they produce can be sensed by those with refined awareness.

Below you will find illustrations of many important hand yoga positions and an explanation of what their benefits are.  Many thanks to the hand model for these pictures, my wife Trupti .

Free Yoga Ab Workout Routine:

One of the most popular sets on the website and my YouTube Channel is the Free Power Yoga Ab Workout Routine.  It consists of some simple ab exercises, some weird ab exercises and some tough ab exercises.  So there is something for everybody in this workout .

You will find all the details of this set in the following article and I do suggest reading over it to familiarize yourself with the exercises: Free Power Yoga Ab Workout Routine.

Below is a video demonstration of this workout.  Take more frequent breaks in necessary.  If your abs are very out of shape, start slowly and as they build up over the month, you can increase the time and repetitions of the exercises.

Initially, when you do this routine you will find your stomach muscles sore the next day or two.  This is normal, as the workout targets the abs from various different angles, which stimulates them in ways they are probably now used to.  This leads to the soreness, which just means you gave them a good workout and are on your way to getting those toned, six-pack abs .

Kundalini Yoga Technique for Abs and more:

One of the most powerful Kundalini Yoga exercises is Sodarshan Chakra Kriya.  The amount of feedback I get regarding the amazing benefits of this technique is really over whelming.  It is of course much more than an exercise for you abs, as it is known to bestow a great many other profound benefits as well.  These include boosting your immune system, unleashing psychic powers, raising kundalini shakti (energy) and purifying your entire system.

The exercise though is wonderful for your abs as well, especially if you pump your stomach forcefully while doing it.  So do include this technique into your workout as well and enjoy it’s many benefits.  Below is a free video demonstration of this exercise, but do read the article, Most Powerful Yoga Pranayama as well, as it has many important guidelines for practice this awesome exercise.

Here is the article with a video demonstration and details for this technique:

Yoga Move to Detox Your Body:

For the month of March I think the following Kundalini Yoga Exercise will be excellent to do.  You may have put on some extra pounds over the long winter months and the following exercise will help you get your abs back into share.  It will also help you detox your body and give your digestive system a much needed boost.

This set is called Pavan Sodhung Kriya and you will find the full details in the following article: Natural Liver Detox – Pavan Sodhung Kriya.

All the details in that article and please do read it before starting this practice, but here is a quick easy for how to do this practice this yoga sequence to help you detoxify your system.

  • Start as illustrated in Picture #1, flat on your back with your hands underneath your buttocks to support your lower back.
  • Inhale deeply, hold your breath in for 15 seconds and come into Illustration #2, with legs raised 60 degrees from the ground and knees straight.
  • Exhale as you bend them and bring your knees towards your chest (Illustration #3).  Hold your breath out now for 15 seconds.
  • Inhale again, hold your breath in for 15 seconds and come back into Illustration #2 position, with legs raised 60 degrees.
  • Finally exhale and return to the starting position, and hold your breath out of 15 seconds.  Inhale, hold breath in for 15 seconds as you raise your legs back up to 60 degrees and continue.
  • Continue with this pattern for the remainder of the exercise.  Start with 1-3 minutes and build up from there.

Yoga Pranayama for Daily Practice:

For the yoga breathing exercise for March, I suggest we all practice the following deep breathing exercise.  This exercise is great for improving your lung capacity and getting your energy going.  It will also help detoxify your system and get rid of deep seated toxins. Here is the link to the article with all the details, which also has a video demonstration of this terrific exercise.

Meditation for March Practice:

As I mentioned last month I was going to start with my favorite meditation Zen Meditation Technique, but because I was getting so much positive feedback with So Hum Mantra Meditation, I had decided to go with that instead.  So for this month, let us do Zen Meditation Technique together and enjoy it’s enormous benefits.  This is perhaps the best meditation to detoxify your mind .

Here is the article with a video demonstration and details for this technique:

Best Yoga and Meditation Techniques

Top Yoga and Meditation Articles

In the last few newsletters I presented the very best yoga, meditation and personal development articles and techniques from 2009, and for those of you who read the website via RSS or directly, I wanted to provide you all this valuable summary as well.  In addition, for those who just joined us please find below the very best stuff from last year, which was found to be the most beneficial and useful by all the readers.  Enjoy!

Yoga and Meditation

Best Yoga Exercises & Sets of 2009

In case you missed any of them, here are the top 5 yoga exercises and sets that the readers enjoyed and benefited from most in 2009.

This is a very complete set of simple yoga exercises which everyone can do.  This set works on your balance, flexibility and strength.  In addition, this set is designed to work on all parts of your body.  Thus, your upper body, lower body and abs, all get a good workout and tuneup.  I strongly recommend this set for anyone looking to start or try yoga, or looking for a regular gentle yoga practice.  This set is also a key part of the very popular Free Beginner’s Yoga Class, which was also launched last year.

Although this set of yoga exercises is primarily designed for men, it is an effective set for women to practice as well.  It consists of the best yoga techniques to open and balance the Sex Chakra, and the best techniques to increase sexual potency.  This set is a core component of the Free Tantra Yoga Sex Chakra Program.

If you are interested in Chakra Balancing and Kundalini, this set is for you.  It is a set which incorporates some of the best chakra balancing techniques and progressively leads you through each chakra, starting from the root chakra to the crown chakra.  This set too plays an important part in the free online classes, and specifically it is part of the Seven Chakra Balancing and Healing Program.

The liver is the one of the most important organs in the body and for all the hard work it does, it sure deserves some love and attention.  This is where Pavan Sodhung Kriya is very useful.  This exercise is great for flushing the liver of toxins and at the same time, it helps you tone and strengthen your stomach and abdominal muscles.  Although it is not part of an online class yet, a Full Body Detox Program is in the works for 2010, and you can be sure this exercise will be part of that program.

For those of you really interested in getting fit, and developing your chest, shoulders, arms, abs, thighs and buttocks, you should check out this set.  It will prove how useful yoga can be in building muscle strength and overall fitness.  Many readers were quite surprised that yoga could deliver such good results in the areas of muscle development and strength training.

Best Meditation Techniques of 2009

In meditation lies the future of humanity.  I have no doubt that slowly but surely all of humanity is going to move towards meditation, and in meditation lies our salvation.  This is why I feel so strongly about teaching meditation and have worked so hard to creating the Meditation Teacher’s Training Program.  But here now let me give you the top 5 meditation techniques from 2009.

I finally had a chance to explain the meditation that I created and personally practice, the Silent Mind (SM) Meditation Technique.  In this 2 part video I broke down the 7 steps involved in SM for you in detail.  This technique is the most advanced form of mind meditation, and is designed to bring he thinking mind to a halt.  You can also read more about this technique here: Silent Mind Meditation Technique.

The Gayatri Mantra is the highest Vedic mantra, and is considered the most powerful as well.  In 2009 I was really happy to launch the Free Online Mantra MP3 Downloads collection, and the Gayatri Mantra was the first mantra I added to it.  This article not only has free MP3 download links for you, but it also has some great videos of the Gayatri Mantra.

Perhaps this was the most needed meditation for 2009 :-).  This meditation is a powerful visualization technique, which leverages the power of the Third Eye and the Mind to help you manifest your dreams and desires.

This meditation produced instant results for many readers and yogis.  They were able to immediately feel the depth of this technique, and were able to have many breakthroughs in a relatively short amount of time.  This mantra meditation is the heart of Kundalini Yoga Meditation.

Another video I finally got a chance to make in 2009, was the video for Sodarshan Chakra Kriya.  This is considered the most powerful meditation in all of yoga, and is known for it’s ability to bestow pyschic powers, supreme excellence and kundalini awakening.  So you can understand why it is so popular :-).  This new video clarifies this important technique, and ensures you are doing it correctly.

627 B Westover Hills Blvd.
Richmond, VA 23255

Description:

Sean T. Everett is the founder of Enso Meditation Society as well as the lead instructor at the Enso Meditation center.  Beginning the practice of meditation at the age of 3, when taught by his father, the practice of awareness of breath, he is more than experienced in the meditative arts.  Thirsty for more knowledge of these great techniques, Sean set out to find a qualified teacher.  Finding Geshe Jampel Thardo a Tibetan Buddhist monk sent to the United States by H.H. the Fourteenth Dalai Lama to teach the dharma.  Geshe Thardo proved to be a greatly compassionate person and held more wisdom than the salt in the ocean, this match was meant to be.  Learning a staggering amount in a matter of a several years under his teacher’s direction Sean was ordained a Buddhist by Geshe Thardo in the Gelug-pa tradition.  Several years later Geshe Thardo passed away causing Sean to have to make serious decisions about where the path would lead next.  Giving this gift to others was the only sensible choice.  Now at Enso Meditation Society, Sean wishes to start a new type of living standard for all to live by.  By bringing clear compassionate non-judgmental awareness to our everyday activities slowly we can cultivate happier minds.  Happier minds makes happier people, happier people makes happier families, happier families makes happier communities, and happier communities can make a happier world.  Enso Meditation Society is non sectarian multi-denominational group.  All are welcome!

Did Yoga and Meditation Remain #1 In 2010 Resolution Survery? Results Posted…

Yoga and Meditation Still #1

Top 2010 New Year’s Resolutions

Here the results of the Top New Year’s Resolutions for 2010 Survey.  Also posted below are the results from the same survey taken in 2009.  The results are quite similar, with “Spiritual, Yoga and Meditation Practice” holding the #1 spot and getting even more votes and also “Service, Help Others” gaining some steam.  Nice trends.  I think we will hit 100% for “Spiritual, Yoga and Meditation” in 2012 .

Since more than one answer was allowed, the percentages are calculated against the total number of participants.  So 85% means that 85% of those of you who responded to the survey said that “Spiritual, Meditation & Yoga” was a resolution you had made.

Yoga and Meditation Remain

To help you realize your resolutions here is one of the most popular articles from 2008 – 10 Keys for Turning Ideas Into Reality.  I do recommend reading that article as it was very inspirational to many.  In fact, some local businesses in the area actually picked up on this article and used it in their staff meetings to motivate and inspire their employees .
