Vladimar runs the great site The High Self, which offers an excellent collection of music for meditation, yoga, relaxation, awakening the soul and the road to enlightenment.  Each of these tracks is several minutes which gives you an hour in total of soul awakening sounds.

Meditation Music can be great for relaxing and stress reduction.  It can also be used as music therapy for self healing and, of course, can be very inspiring as it directs your mind and heart towards the sublime.  Below are some ways in which to use these MP3s to enhance your life and practice.

Meditation Music to Awaken the Soul:

Vladimir writes beautifully about the power of music to touch our souls.

“Of all the arts which serve our enjoyment, music is the loftiest. It brings us closer to truth than any other art. Music speaks a language which is universally acknowledged throughout the world.

When we try to understand this peculiar power which resides in music, we find that it is the most transient of all the others. The sounds which delight our ears have appeared suddenly out of the absolute silence which envelops the world and they disappear almost instantaneously into that same silence.

Music carries with it something of the divine power which lives in that great silence. It is an ambassador sent by God to remind us wandering mortals of our real home.”

Awaken Your Soul Part One – Six MP3s for Free:

The Life of a Soul Warrior: Looking Back

Welcome to an article by our new guest contributor, Dr. Bina Nangia. Dr. Nangia is a long-time spiritual seeker who works with children. This week she looks at a warrior of the soul who is reviewing her life to date.

Today the warrior looks back.

She has so many times been afraid of going into battle.

She has said ‘yes’ when she wanted to say ‘no’ and at times failed in her spiritual duties. Every warrior of the soul must have suffered for the silliest reasons. At some times must have lied or betrayed someone in the past. The warrior now knows she must have at times even hurt someone she loves; for every warrior must have trodden a path that was not theirs.

But now she looks back and knows that she has been through all this and yet has never lost hope of being better than she is.

At this moment she realizes that all her battles were necessary to help her go across and reach that inner self where only she can enter and knows the truth. All the battles were orchestrated absolutely perfectly and now she can look upon all of those as necessary experiences.

She now realizes the importance of all those situations and circumstances which came her way.

The soul warrior always listens to the words of certain thinkers such as these by T.H.Huxley:

“The consequences of our actions are the scarecrows of fools and the beacons of wise men”.

The chessboard is the world, the pieces are the gestures of our daily life, and the rules of the games are what we call the laws of nature. The players on the other side are hidden from us, but we know that HIS play is always fair, just and patient. The warrior simply has to accept the challenge.

She knows that God never overlooks a single mistake by those he loves, nor does he allow his favourites to pretend ignorance of the rules of the game.

When life lives through the soul warrior and she experiences the experiences, she realizes the importance of spending time with herself. This time she knows is most important to re-connect, contemplate and reflect, and so even in the midst of battles she manages to meditate.

There is fast movement all around her, things are happening at such a fast pace, that the soul warrior is awestruck but during these times she often sits down, relaxes and lets everything just happen, the way it is happening. She merely witnesses and lovingly surrenders to all movement of life around her.

Earlier what seemed difficult and impossible looks well orchestrated. The soul warrior is glad and offers silent prayers to God and her masters.

The soul warrior has learnt patience over her battles which were difficult and understands their purpose. There has been restlessness, uncertainty, anxiety, but replacing these with courage, she has won many inner battles.

The warrior has realized that the words ‘worrier’ and ‘warrior’ look alike except for the ‘a’. This means the ‘attitudes’ of the warrior. For a soul warrior her attitudes have kept her going, never faltering remaining steadfast calm and composed. She views life with tenderness and determination. Her attitudes coupled with faith, belief and determination will help her ultimately solve the mysteries of life and complete the task of the universe.

She understands that life is beauty and sees a profound awareness in that beauty. The greatest wisdom lies in choosing this awareness wisely.

The soul warrior is so determined that she will never give up. She will continue to sail her boat of actions with God’s breadth upon the sails, directing, nudging, motivating and cajoling her into doing what she is meant to do.

She drifts slowly but surely with steadfastness and determination to carry the soul’s messages to other soul warriors.

There are no resentments, judgements, expectations, attachments only unconditional love and appreciation to one and all.

How to Discover Your Soul, Atman or Higher Self

Summary: Atman, Soul, Higher Self, Christ Consciousness, Buddha Nature is something you find referenced repeatedly in spiritual texts, but, how do you come to know this True aspect of yourself?  In this article we explore this very interesting question of how to realize and recognize your Divine Nature.

How to Discover Your Soul, Atman or Higher Self

Often times I receive some excellent questions from readers via email and as I set out to answer them (sometimes a few days later than I would have liked :-), I feel that the discussion would be well worth sharing with you all.  So I am starting this new series where I will share the answers I give to some of these terrific questions.

Recently a very evolved and intelligent reader who is far along on the spiritual path asked the following insightful question.  She asked,

Discover Your Soul

Question: “How does one know when one meets one’s Higher Self?”

Her question emerged from certain transcendental experiences she is having and I think this question is of great value.  First, let me just say that the Higher Self being referred to here goes by many names depending on the tradition naming it.  The Buddhist’s call it Buddha Nature or Big Mind, the Hindus – Atman, the Christians – Christ Consciousness, other religions just the Soul, Jiddu Krishnamurti calls it that aspect of your being beyond time and limitation, philosopher’s call it Higher Consciousness, some just call it Love, others True Divine Nature, Sat Nam, One Mind, Universal Consciousness, Self, I AM etc, etc.  Sometimes, like idiots, us human beings start to fight just because we have different names for the same thing!  In any case, I am referring to this higher aspect of a human being in this article.

Answer:  “How does one know when one meets one’s Higher Self?”

In The Apocalyse Post written for my friend Albert’s Blog Meme, I gave the following description of the Higher Self or Atman.  The secret to encountering and recognizing this aspect of your being is to recognize or encounter any one of these attributes.  In other words, the Soul is discovered when its attributes are discovered within, and as you realize one aspect of your Higher Self, in time you will realize all the rest as well.

Attributes of the Atman (Soul) or Higher Self:

  • You are Infinite, Eternal and Timeless.  Never do you take birth, nor do you ever die.
  • You are the ever silent witness to the drama of existence.
  • Everything occurs in you.  You are the substratum.  The apparent world appears and disappears in your consciousness.
  • You are blissful and complete – lacking nothing.
  • You are divine love and compassion.
  • You are the highest intelligence.
  • You are an organic extension of the Lord.  You and the Lord are One.

So encountering the Higher Self, is the encounter of any of these attributes of the Higher Self.  If you are feeling Great Bliss, Great Silence, Great Love, Great Oneness or lucky enough to experience the Actuality of Divinity, it means you are encountering your True Divine Nature – Your Buddha Nature – Your Christ Consciousness.  The Soul is shinning through and consequentially acting through “you”.  You are welcome to call it experiencing the Lord, as your Divine Nature (Atman) and the Lord (Brahman) are one and same.  Me and My Father are One.

Having said that, the wonderful thing about enlightenment is that it’s not a fixed point.  It has infinite variety and you may experience it as no one has before.  So although the above is a guideline, it certainly is not law.  You may experience your Higher Self in ways that perhaps it only wants you to and that is why this journey is such an adventure.  It is about infinity, the deeper you go, the more infinity you find.

No Body, No Mind, Only Soul

Spiritual Story – No Body, No Mind, Only Soul

Zen Meditation Stories: Advaita Vedanta

Kundalini-Yoga-Practice1

(Warning: This story contains some strong language.  Please do not read if you find that offensive.)

Chapter 1: The Getaway

The airport was bustling with activity.  It was the busiest time of the year for traveling and Injin knew that this was to his advantage.  He nervously checked himself in the mirror.  Making sure that his mustache was securely fastened, along with the brown curly toupee.  All looked in order and Injin assured himself that the disguise was immaculate and that there was no way the authorities would recognize him.

He strode out of the men’s room with renewed confidence and made his way to the book store.  A smug smile crept across his lips as he glanced at the front page headlines of the London Times…

“KOHINOOR DIAMOND STOLEN… THE IMPOSSIBLE HEIST !!!”

“Not so impossible,” Injin mused as he paid the cashier for the paper.

He made his way to the gate, briefcase in one hand, the times tucked under his arm, his topcoat hanging over the other forearm and the Kohinoor diamond wrapped in a scan proof plastic container surgically placed inside his stomach.

It was almost too easy.  The metal detectors had been fooled, the extra police checking passports had been fooled, the plain clothed Interpol agents had been fooled.  Injin was thrilled, his row had been called and it was time for him to the board the plane.  But what Injin saw up ahead rudely ended his short lived euphoria.

Clearly that was an Interpol agent, he felt sure of it.  It was the tense, suspicious looking fellow in his early forties who Injin had noticed loitering around the waiting area earlier.  This fellow was now boarding the plane ahead of Injin.  Injin was perplexed.  He could think of no good reason for an agent to want to actually board the plane… did they have a lead?  Injin forced himself to stay calm, “He’s probably just a guy afraid of flying and so is looking anxious.  He’s not an agent,” he tried to convince himself.  “Everything is going to be just fine.”  Injin nervously boarded the plane.

Chapter 2: Confusion

Injin leapt at the agent who had just risen from the aisle seat diagonally across from him and who was in the process of drawing his weapon.  The 9mm pistol went off twice.  The first bullet smashing through Injin’s chest and the second imbedding itself square into the container sitting in his tummy.  Injin blacked out.

Injin heard the voices.  They were faint and faraway at first but then gradually grew louder and clearer.

“What a brave soul this man is,” he heard the first say.  “He was the first guy  who jumped that hijacker and wrestled free his weapon, after that half the plane pummeled that terrorist.”

“Yeah, this guy has the heart of a hero,” the second said.

“Fucking hijacker!!!” Injin couldn’t believe it.  “That guy was a hijacker.  Shit, just my luck.  Well at least I’m alive,” he thought.  Then a terrorizing thought occurred to him.  “One bullet hit me in the stomach.  Shit, shit, shit, they are going to find the diamond if they operate.  Damn!”

Injin wondered where he was.  He couldn’t open his eyes or move at all.  He felt no pain either.  He could hear the roar of the traffic though but did not hear any sirens.  He tried to speak but couldn’t. He felt a bit confused.  They were not in an ambulance but they were on the road.  He heard the second voice say, “Damn traffic, Bill is the convoy still behind us?”

“Yeah, I can see the trail of lights.  Looks like all the passengers and their families are coming to attend this poor chap’s funeral.”

“Funeral… what…?” Injin was baffled.  “Funeral… I’m not dead you fools.   Hey morons… I’m not dead,” Injin tried to shout… in silence.  “This must be some kind of joke,”  he mused.  “Everything is going to just fine.”  The hearse sped onwards.

Chapter 3: The Burial

“Friends, we are gathered here today to put to rest Mr. Drake Parkson, a brave brave soul…”

“My eulogy…. they must be kidding!”  Injin had tried yelling, moving, breathing, coughing, spitting and every other bodily function in an attempt to get noticed but it was all for naught.  Apparently the airline’s effort in locating any family of Mr. Drake Parkson had been defeated and then to put this whole incident to a quick end they had sprung for a lavish funeral and labeled him the Solitary Hero.  He had been pronounced dead on arrival and no medical treatment had been administered to him.

It was now that the most horrifying thought occurred to Injin, “Maybe, I am dead and this is what happens when you die!” He felt sick… well he thought he feel sick.  He just wasn’t sure.  He was not breathing, as a matter of fact nothing seemed to be happening.  He was not sure if he was actually feeling anything or if he simply thought that he was feeling something.  In any case he did not like the looks of it.  An eternity of just doing nothing! He could hear the thud of the mud as it struck his casket. “God help me, I am being buried alive… dead… I am being buried.”

Chapter 4: Nothing at all

Days had passed.  At first Injin thought that maybe he was in some sort of a coma and that he would wake up.  He wasn’t so sure that he wanted that to be the case.   He then figured that maybe there was some sort of a waiting list or something and that his turn would come up eventually.  That assurance didn’t hold up for long.  He decided that the best thing to do was pray and he recited whatever he could remember of the Bible.  He did that for about 2 full days.

He hoped he might just fall asleep, but that never came to pass either.  No sleep, no dreams just endless boredom of his chattering mind.

Maybe this is hell.  He challenged the Devil to show himself.  Then he challenged God, then he challenged anybody at all.  He was all alone… forever.

He tried to will himself to die, thinking that maybe he was hanging on and that was causing the problem.  He tried to recollect from what he had read anything at all about death and after-life.  He looked for the soothing lights, listened for the angelic music, waited for the grace of God but heard nothing but the echoes of his relentless mind.

He was itching to move, to run, to take a deep breath.  He wanted to laugh, to shout but all he could do was cry and all that fell were empty tears from lifeless eyes. Weeks passed.

Chapter 5: The Getaway II

“They are digging me up,” Injin couldn’t believe it.  But sure enough the bulldozer had dug up 6 feet of mud and the casket creaked as the crane hoisted up the Solitary Hero’s coffin.

Injin heard the cacophony of workers voices and the revving of a truck’s engine as his coffin was driven out of the burial area of the cemetery.  After a short ride, Injin could make out that his coffin had been rolled into a building, down an elevator and finally after being set down it was being pried open.

“Doctor, is this the fellow who you sowed up?” he heard a calm voice ask.

“Yes… yes this is him, Injin Banister…. I am sure.” a familiar voice replied.  Injin recognized the voice as that of the surgeon who he had paid off in London to sow up his stomach.  So they had eventually cracked the case of the missing diamond. “Fire up the incinerator,” he heard the calm voice command. “Yes sir, Inspector, right away,” another replied.

Injin heard the hissing of gas followed by a low pitched thump signifying the lighting of the oven.  He wondered if it would hurt.  He almost felt that even that would be better than this nothing that he had had to endure for so many weeks.

He heard the heavy breathing of men, a few grunts and they a loud thud.

“Shit, sorry about that,” he heard a voice exclaim.

“They DROPPED me, Jesus Christ, these freaks,” Injin was pissed.

“I think we broke his arm, and maybe a leg too,” one voice stated shakily.

“So what he’s a corpse you dunce, jeez the incompetence these days, just get him up and toss him in, ” the inspector commanded. A few thuds later Injin heard the whipping of flames and crackling of burning skin.

A couple of minutes passed and then all of a sudden he felt very strange.  He started to feel himself contracting.  He felt his whole being pulled inwards to a single point.  It got tighter and smaller.  He felt tremendous energy being focused and brought in.  Then… just as suddenly he felt himself explode.  He was moving in all directions all at once.  There seemed no boundaries and sense of space seemed to stretch infinitely everywhere.   A sense of unending joy and peace seemed to flood every corner of the limitless space.  Injin lost his sense of time and self but only momentarily as he suddenly felt himself being sucked back to the nightmarish state of somethingness.

The sound of the whipping flames came to an abrupt end .

“Oh man, the incinerator malfunctioned,” cried out one of the voices.

“Jesus Christ,” wailed Injin, “For God’s sake get the fucking thing working again.”  Injin was distraught.  He couldn’t believe it.  “The incinerator stopped working… get it working again you dorks!”

“Has he burned through yet?” the inspector was inquiring, “Can you see the Diamond or the container?”

Injin held his breath… or at least he tried to.

“O please Lord, let them continue,” he pleaded, “I have to be rid of this body and mind.”

“Un Un, I can’t see it yet,” he heard the rustling of a poker against metal and bone.

“Well, lets fire up her up again boys, we want this meat well done!” commanded the inspector.

Whoosh, the familiar sound of flames captured the air.  The body ignited, Injin exploded again, and merged with the blissful silence.  All that was left this time was a pile of ashes, 2 bullets and a sparkling diamond.

What is 10 Bodies of Light Yoga Numerology:

The 10 Bodies of Light Yoga Numerology is a fantastic tool for gaining deep insight into your life and soul.  It is an ancient mathematical science which uses your birth date to compute various aspects of your being, based on the 10 Bodies of Light model.  These insights then point out exactly what you need to do in order to maximize your success and potential in life.  The science is so powerful that an intuitive and proficient teacher, once having done the numerological analysis, will often know more about the student than the student themselves!

Today quantum physics and other advanced mathematical systems are shedding more light into the connection between numbers and the subtle, spiritual universe.   This connection and vibratory value of numbers was known long ago to the yogis and saints of ancient India.   The 10 Bodies of Light Yoga Numerology can be considered this bridge between mathematics and the multi-dimensional, spiritual being.

Ram Dass Talking About Who or What the Guru Really Is

Our popular contributor Kara-Leah explores the notion of Guru. What is a guru and does it have to be a person?

by Kara-Leah Grant

Author of Forty Days of Yoga – Breaking down the barriers to a home yoga practice.

This week I’ve been reading a most excellent book by Ram Dass (he of Be Here Now) called Be Love Now.

And lo & behold, wouldn’t you know, it’s answered all of my questions about finding a guru, what a guru is, and the relationship we have with a guru.

I’m stoked, to say the least.

Ram Dass was once a Harvard Professor, and was best buddies with Timothy Leary. Together they did a bunch of acid trips, and Richard Alpert (as Ram was known then) headed off to India to find someone who could explain the various types of conscious awareness he’d encountered in his acid trips.

What he found was his guru, Neem Karoli Baba (Maharaj-ji), sitting on the side of a hill, wrapped in a blanket.

Says Ram Dass of his experience:

What followed was the kind of opening that can only be performed by a true guru who knows the precise moment the nut is ripe to be cracked open with a sharp single tap.

Maharaj-ji began telling me things about my previous night under the stars that he couldn’t possibly know. Then he said “Spleen!” in plain English, which is what my mother died of, and my unreleased emotions cascaded with the impossible fact that this baba in the Himalayas knew every detail about my mother.

Something in me shattered, and I began to sob. I was flooded with grief, and relief, and the immensity of travelling halfway around the world to find this loving old man in a blanket who knew.

At that point, Richard completely surrendered to letting Maharaj-ji run his life – tell him what to do and where to go and how long to do it. He stayed in India for six months, meditating, learning yoga and pranayama, and just going inwards – all under the direction of Maharaj-ji. And then Maharaj-ji sent him back to the States and said he should stay for two years. He also gave a blessing for Ram’s book. Says Ram Dass:

I said “What book?” I had no idea what Maharaj-ji was talking about.

That book was Be Here Now, which became a seminal spiritual text of the ’60s and launched Ram Dass as a spiritual teacher in the West.

Now, over thirty years later, he’s published another book (there’s been a few in between too) called Be Love Now. In it, Ram goes into great detail about the nature of the Guru, and the relationship between the student and the Guru. Maharaj-ji has since died, but remains Ram’s guru.

And therein lies the truly fascinating thing about gurus – they don’t need to be alive, nor exist on the physical plane. You may never met your guru in real life per se… but it doesn’t mean you don’t have one.

Finding a guru is really an oxymoron. It doesn’t matter whether you know your guru. Your guru knows you.

Most of us aren’t ready for that kind of opening. We may meet but not recognise our Guru. The guru allows us to come and go, knowing that sooner or later, in this life or in another we will meet when the moment for transformation is ripe.

Ram goes on to illustrate his point by sharing stories about the hundreds of people who would come and meet with Maharaji-Ji, and the few that would truly “see” him, emphasizing that the guru manifests when the devotee is ready.

Now I’ve heard all this before, but somehow, reading it here and now it’s permeated. I feel a softening and relaxing.

An understanding that’s seeping into my bones as I realise having a guru doesn’t matter and I don’t have to do anything to find one.

That’s pretty cool.

But what’s even cooler is how Ran Dass makes clear that the Guru is about Love. Real Love. The unconditional kind of Love that envelopes everything and is everything.

To love God or the Guru is to let go of everything that separates you from the Beloved. This is the essence of devotional surrender and renunciation. …Maharaji-ji’s love touches love in me, and I become that love.

In this loving awareness of each moment there is also surrender, surrender to the guru, to the moment, to your soul. There is only the heart and the love that consumes the lover who becomes the Beloved. Love is a state of being, not a trip from here to there.

And that’s what’s really tweaked for me.

Love is a state of being.

In the past, I’ve sought love in relationship. And I’ve found it, over and over again. But every time the relationship ended, so did the love. And so in order to find Love again, I needed to find another relationship.

Not this time.

After ending my last long-term relationship in December 2011, I found Love within and discovered it was possible to be In Love without any external object to focus that Love on… what a revelation!

It began with a conscious effort to love myself – to treat myself as a Beloved at all times. To take care of myself the way I’d always looked to be taken care of – sometimes this was as simple as feeding myself nourishing food by taking the time to cook for myself.

Somehow, this experience of being Love of the last eight months, and Ram Dass’s words have brought this home to me…

Love is the Guru.

That’s why we need Gurus – to show us Love, so we can become Love. Because there is nothing else – all else flows from Love.

Surrendering to the guru or the Beloved doesn’t mean giving power to another human being – it’s letting go of the stuff that keeps you separate. Each time you surrender, it leads you further in, deeper into yourself. Giving up things is incredibly easy in the presence of love.

Knowing this has given me a place to be here and now.

It’s reminded me that the longest and most arduous journey that any of us ever takes is the one from the mind to the heart.

That’s the only journey I need to take, and I can take it in every moment.

There’s a mantra that Ram speaks of, it’s simple, and in English, and I’ve been using it every day.

I am loving-awareness

That’s it.

I am loving-awareness.

And you know what?

So are you.

About Kara-Leah

Kara-Leah is a writer and yoga teacher who has always been infinitely curious about the make-up of the human psyche and body. Regular yoga helped her heal and recover from chronic back issues, including a spinal fusion at age 16, and two episodes of psychosis at age 29.

Her daily home yoga practice began in earnest when people kept asking her to teach them yoga.  She’s since trained as a teacher with Shiva Rea, and immersed herself in practicing, teaching yoga and writing about yoga. Kara-Leah lives just outside of Queenstown, New Zealand with her son Samuel.

She’s the publisher of The Yoga Lunchbox and has just published her first book, Forty Days of Yoga – Breaking down the barriers to a home yoga practice. She’s also a regular contributor to the Elephant Journal

Five Excellent Yoga Books to Add to Your Library

Our popular contributor Kara-Leah looks at the importance of surrounding yourself with a supportive community of friends – people who understand the spiritual path and can help you along it with honest and compassionate feedback and support.

by Kara-Leah Grant, Author of Forty Days of Yoga – Breaking down the barriers to a home yoga practice.

I love books – and I especially love yoga books. I’ve even written one of my own :-). My library is mostly made up of yoga books, and I refer to them again and again. Here’s a selection of my favourite yoga reads.

Yoga of Heart: The Healing Power of Intimate Connection by Mark Whitwell

Join Mark as he takes you on a journey through the intimacy of yoga practice – how it’s designed to help us connect with each other too, not just with ourselves.

This exploration of yoga as relationship goes right into looking at intimacy and sex as they apply to yoga. He describes sex as a vinyasa and suggests that love-making could also be seen as a daily spiritual practice.

Marks also looks in-depth the relationship between a yoga teacher and a yoga student.

He’s pretty damning at times on the way that yoga has been taught over the years – describing B.K.S. Iyengar’s teaching as ‘gymnastic anatomy with scant regard for the principles of yoga’ and describing K. Phattabhi Jois’ asana sequences as ‘being taught out of the context of the full yoga story’.

Popular teachers are running competing businesses with arbitrary boxes of information and goals. Claiming authority, they have pushed exercise systems into the market and called them yoga. Much of it is misinformation or very partial information out of context of the whole story. They… exploit people’s gullibility and good will. These systems create fixed patterns in the body and mind, and, at worse, cause physical and psychological injury and addiction.

Autobiography of a Yogi by Paramahansa Yogananda

This is a break-through, must-read, buy-it-now book.

It’s so damn good, that whenever I stumble across a copy in a secondhand book shop, I buy it, because I’m always giving away the copy I own.

This guy will blow your mind. A university graduate, Paramahansa Yogananda spent over thirty years living in the West. He was one of the first great yoga masters to come over from India.

In this book, he tells the tale of studying with his guru – and a fantastical and magical story of expanded notions of reality it is. There’s everything from dematerialising gurus to an old woman who doesn’t eat or drink but just lives on prana, to fulfilled prophecies of illness and disorder and remembered previous incarnations.

Yet it’s inherent groundedness and practicality makes one think that maybe these experiences truly did happen. Here’s an exchange between Paramahansa Yogananda (Mukunda) and his guru.

“Mukunda, why don’t you get an astrological amulet?”

“Should I, Master? I don’t believe in astrology”

“It is not a question of belief: the scientific attitude one should take on a subject is if it is true. The law of gravitation worked as efficiently before Newton as after him. The cosmos would be fairly chaotic if its laws could not operate without the sanction of human belief… All parts of creation are linked together and interchange their influences. The balanced rhythm of the universe is rooted in reciprocity.”

Yoga and the Quest for the True Self by Stephen Cope

Part autobiography, part exploration of the link between yoga and Western psychotherapy, this book was enormously critical in helping me to understand the yogic journey within a psychological framework.

Stephen Cope, a psychotherapist who left a practice in Boston to live, study and ultimately teach at the Kripalu Yoga Ashram, tells a damn fine story as he examines the way in which our practice of yoga affects our psyche – the ups and owns, the traps and pitfalls, the freedoms and liberation.

It’s the kind of in-depth, specialist understanding you’re unlikely to get from your local yoga teacher, and it helps to ground the spiritual journey in a Western context. Stephen also goes into great depth about the awakening of Kundalini energy in the spine – something he both witnessed and experienced during his time at Kripalu. Here’s him talking about his first experience of watching Kripalu’s guru surrendering to the flow of prana in a demonstration of the true essence of Hatha Yoga:

Ten minutes into the experience, I noticed a chance in my perception. Colours had become brighter, bolder. Light itself had become a palpable golden presence. The whole room dissolved into waves of light, particles of energy. I felt the room breathing together, moving together, pulsing and expanding and contracting. At one point, I had an experience of energy rushing up and down my spine.

Compassion in Action: Setting out on the Path of Service

by Ram Dass and Mirabai Bush

I discovered this book via a recommendation from a friend at a time when I was really struggling with judgmental thoughts about people in general, feeling spiritually more evolved or spiritually superior to more people I was running across. And then of course, I was judgmental against myself for having judgmental thoughts about other people all the time!

This didn’t help… all I could see was people’s faults and weaknesses. I wanted to know where all the loving, compassionate, open spiritual people were and surround myself with them!

This book helped me understand this phase in the spiritual journey as the first half of the book is Ram Dass (who wrote the seminal ’70s text Be Here Now) talking about his journey. The second half is Mirabai Bush talking about practical steps for being of service in the world. It was Ram Dass’s journey that really spoke to me initially – especially when he tells the story of having to return to his family home at the age of 55 and take care of his ageing father.

This period of looking after Dad’s household gave me a profound sense of well-being for having the opportunity to serve my father. When Mother had been ill and dying, there was Dad to look after her – and besides, I was far too busy being an independent, self-important somebody to find time or even acknowledge any responsibility for her care.

Beyond Power Yoga: Eight Levels of Practice for Body and Soul, by Beryl Bender Birch

When I first got back to New Zealand, lack of yoga meant I had to turn to a home practice. This book, and another of Beryl’s, Power Yoga: The Total Strength and Flexibility Workout, were my bibles. Not only step-by-step instruction for Power Yoga, a derivative of Astanga yoga, but also details on other aspects of yoga including Patanjali’s eight limbs.

In Beyond Power Yoga, Beryl does just that, goes beyond Power Yoga and explores her journey into yoga and to India, yoga in action, breathing, meditation and ‘leap into liberation – bliss’. She tells a damn good story, does Beryl Bender Birch (and how perfect is that name!?), using real life experiences from her own life to illustrate yogic concepts like bandha, vayu, tapas, yamas and niyamas.

I love her description of yoga as:

…going in the direction and ‘uncomfortableness’, and making it comfortable… I don’t mean going to the extreme expression of discomfort. I don’t mean torture, for heaven’s sake. I just mean slowly becoming more resilient, maybe noticing discomfort less, and requiring less comfort in your postures and in your life. And one day you will notice that, perhaps, some small level of ‘discomfortableness’ simply will not have authority over you or your experience at that moment.

This is just a small selection of many of the excellent yoga books out there just waiting for you to read.

The Friends You Choose Make All the Difference – Choose Wisely

Our popular contributor Kara-Leah looks at the importance of surrounding yourself with a supportive community of friends – people who understand the spiritual path and can help you along it with honest and compassionate feedback and support.

by Kara-Leah Grant

Author of Forty Days of Yoga – Breaking down the barriers to a home yoga practice.

One of the joys of being serious about yoga and meditation practice is the community of like-minded friends I’ve built up around me.

Traditionally, a serious aspirant on the spiritual path would have a teacher or guru to turn to for help, guidance and assistance. However, for many of us living ordinary householder lives, while walking a spiritual path, we don’t have access to a serious teacher or guru.

Instead, in my life, this teacher or guru hows up in my life in the guise of friends and family – many of whom happen to be yoga teachers.

This kind of like-souled support is so crucial because walking a spiritual path is not easy.

One could liken it to the difference between sticking to life in the village, where day to day living revolves around gossip at the water well, caring for family and getting the chores done, and leaving the safety of the village to go on a quest. Once the safety of village life is left far behind, the traveler encounters obstacles and strife, and must battle to overcome the dangers along the way.

Think Frodo in Lord of the Rings – a task is thrust upon him, and with his small group of friends, off he must go to complete his quest.

Giving up is not an option, and as much as one might dream of the easy life back in the village, it is impossible to go back to the village knowing that there is another world out there, and that the quest has been abandoned. Indeed, in Frodo’s case, the very survival of his world relies on him completing his quest.

Just like Frodo, when one embarks on a journey of spiritual growth and discovery, one leaves ‘ordinary’ life behind.

Once the decision has been made to wake up to the full potential of life, it’s impossible to fall back asleep again and be content with ordinary day-to-day life. And to a degree, the survival of our world could possibly depend on us waking up to the Truth – that peace and contentment lies within, and only when we live this we will we create peace on Earth.

Once one has stepped out of village life, the trials and tribulations of life take on a completely different hue.

No longer are the conflicts all about the other, and what they did or didn’t do, but all about what one is holding on to deep within. Those who are still in the village don’t understand this, and so when circumstances seem to create strife and struggle, their natural inclination is to advise to change those external circumstances.

Kinda like telling Frodo to stay away from Mordoor because he might run into trouble, rather than helping him become strong enough to travel into it.

The spiritual path is the same – everything we encounter that seems to create struggle and strife is an opportunity for us to grow and change. And as we grow and change, we discover that circumstances that once caused us to struggle no longer affect us at all.  We realise that it was our own thoughts and attachments that created our misery – every last ounce of it.

For example, I remember once catching up a with a friend for coffee. It was a delight to sit and share our experiences of life from our spiritual understanding. I was grateful for Kelly’s compassion and understanding.

Most of all, I was grateful for her insight. I had been wrestling with a particular issue for a very long time, and as I lamented to her over our tea and OJ:

I just can’t wait until I’m through all of this.

Kelly nodded and thought for a moment and then replied:

Maybe it’s not about when it all ends, but being in a place where you no longer want it all to end.

It was a simple sentence, amongst many that late afternoon, but it struck home.

Of course! In wanting something ‘not to be’, I was resisting the moment. And it is in resisting what is that we create misery because we are no longer in harmony with life.

The issue wasn’t that I had these awful feelings coming up to deal with, the true issue was that I wished they weren’t coming up.

When we stay stuck in resistance, in wishing something wasn’t, we are paralyzed, and unable to move forward. Moving into a place of acceptance creates the space we need in the moment to be able to take action to create different feelings and thoughts.

There is something so very powerful about saying:

Right, this is how it is… and that’s cool. Now, what am I going to do about it?

Being friends with people like Kelly, who can discern these simple truths and gently reflect them back to me, is truly valuable thing.

It is the support of these friends and family, that has made it possible for me to keep walking the path I am on.

It has been a tough path to walk, yet paradoxically, as Kelly reminded me on Friday, I am the source of much of the misery and struggle. It doesn’t have to be tough at all.

After all, I am also the source of my joy, peace and contentment – with a little help from my friends.

So if you’ve decided to embark on a search for self-realisation – for this is what the quest is all about – find friends that share your vision, and stick close to them because when the path twists and turn and the way turns dark because your friends will make all the difference. Like the ring in Frodo’s quest, the ego is a tricksy thing, always there to tempt and confuse us. It is our friends that can see the truth and remind us of the quest we are on.

And if your friends prefer to stay in the village and enjoy life there, have the courage to step out on your quest anyway, knowing there are always new friends to be made.

There are many, many people around the world seeking truth, all you need do is take that first step, and you’ll find that someone is always there to offer a helping hand.
