Visualization Yoga Technique for Aura Healing

Healing Your Aura

It has been some time since I published a technique to do aura healing.  Previously I wrote about 2 useful techniques for working on your aura and they are Eagle Pose for Powerful Aura and Yoga Criss-Cross for Aura Cleansing.  Today’s technique though is quite different from these 2 techniques as it has a very large visualization and mental component.  So for those who are artistic or visual in nature, this technique will be perfect for you :-).

This technique is usually part of a set specifically designed to work on your aura, but of that set it is generally the key exercise.  I suggest doing these exercises independently as a mini set, or adding them to to end of a routine focused on energy and refinement.

Chakra Center Aura

Your aura, as per Kundalini Yoga, is the sum total power of your nervous system and it reflects the power of the prana or life force flowing through you.  The greater your aura the more magnetic and influential you can be, and those that have great presence and charisma are those who have a strong, bright aura.

When it comes to health, healing and working on yourself, it is important not to overlook the power and influence of your mind and this particular technique exploits that dimension.  Specifically, it uses the power of visualization to help you develop and energize your aura.

Yogic Breathing for Aura Purification:

As I explained above, auric power is a reflection of pranic power, so the more clear your channels the better the flow of prana (life force) and the brighter and clearer your aura.  So along with physical and mental exercises, breathing techniques are also excellent for healing your aura.  Below are 2 such techniques which are very useful for this.

You can use these breathing exercises to create your own aura healing set.  Do them first and then do the aura healing technique.

Anuloma Viloma Pranayama

Bhaktrika Yoga Pranayama

More Yoga Exercises and Stretches:

In addition to the exercises and poses above, you will find more yoga techniques in the following 2 online collections – Free Hatha Yoga Galleries and Free Kundalini Yoga Exercises.  Also, you will find more useful breathing exercises in the Free Online Yoga Pranayama Collection

For Yoga and Meditation Certification Course Students:

For students enrolled in the Online Yoga Teacher Training and Certification Course or Online Meditation Certification Program, note that these poses are challenging to hold for extended periods of time.  So the best way to motivate your students to do these postures is to do them yourself along with the class.  This way you are leading by example and you are also working on healing and cleansing your own aura at the same time :-).

Aura Healing Technique

Below please find details of how to practice this technique, along with illustrations, step-by-step instructions, benefits, cautions and practice tips.

A. How to do Aura Healing:

  • Start by sitting up straight with your legs crossed.  Close your eyes.  If you cannot sit cross legged you may sit up on a chair.  It is important to keep you back straight though.
  • Take 5 slow deep breaths and clear your mind of all worries, anxieties and fears.  Relax.
  • Next lift your right arm straight up with palm facing in and fingers extended and left arm straight out to the side, with palm facing up and fingers extended, as shown in Illustration #1 above.
  • Now begin the Breath of Fire Breathing Exercise.  And while holding this position, visualize a waterfall emanating from your right palm, arching down and falling onto your left palm.  If you have trouble visualizing a waterfall, you can visualize a white, bright beam of light arcing between your right palm and left palm.  If you have trouble keeping up with Breath of Fire, switch to Long Deep Breathing instead.  Hold and continue to visualize for a duration that is comfortable for you.
  • Next reverse the arm positions as shown in Illustration #2 above and again do the visualization along with the Breath of Fire.  Continue for an equal time.
  • Finally, extend both arms out to the sides, with palms facing up and fingers extended and visualize the waterfall or semicircle of light flowing between the 2 palms.  Remember to continue with the Breath of Fire.
  • To end, lower your arms to your lap, switch to long deep breathing and for 5 slow breaths visualize yourself with a shinning bright white aura.  End with a smile.

B. Duration:

  • Depending on your capacity, start with 15 seconds for each phase of this exercise and build up from there. You can do up to 3 minutes per phase.

C. Aura Healing Benefits:

  • Helps to heal, charge and energize your aura.
  • Increases your charisma and magnetism.
  • Makes you more influential and powerful.
  • Protects you from negative energies.
  • Improves your lung capacity and strengthens your shoulders.
  • Helps you develop your power of visualization and creativity.

D. Practice Tips for Aura Healing:

  • If you are new to doing Breath of Fire and are having trouble with it, this is not uncommon so don’t fret.  It takes time to get this breathing correct.  Exclusively practice Breath of Fire for 1-3 minutes daily and it will help you master it. In the meantime use long deep breathing for the aura healing technique.
  • If your arms get tired, you can lower them and place them in Cosmic Mudra, but continue to do the visualization and breathing.
  • Remember with regard to discomfort, that often the mind gives out first, so impose your spirit over your mind and go further than you think you can.

5 More Tips To Help You Meditate Better

1. Be Kind To Yourself:

Real meditation is hard work.  This is especially true if you have gone deep into this art and are now at the stage of doing the ultimate meditation which I define as, comprehending your thoughts from moment to moment via direct perception.

If you have sincerely tried this, you will realize that it is not a trivial ask.  Thoughts are subtle and swift and in order for them to be “digested”, a great deal of energy, awareness and intelligence is needed.  So if you are struggling, that is ok. This is a challenge for all of us, so don’t add obstacles by thinking negatively and being harsh on yourself.

Even if you are not doing such advanced meditation, in general meditation is not easy.  Sitting still, focusing, attending, letting go, etc, can all difficult be to do, so don’t beat yourself up if you are not meditating well all the time.  At the end of the day all you can do is put your best foot forward.  Enlightenment is not a guarantee, you can simply do your best and leave the rest in the hand’s of the Universe.

2. Stay Aware at All Times:

Meditation is not just about sitting for 20 minutes or 1 hour a day. Meditation is a full-time job.  Try, as best as you can, to be as mindful and aware of that which is taking place in your outer and inner environment all the time.  See how well you can remain an observer, a witness, to the comings and goings of your life.  This practice is the key to undoing the detrimental conditioning that has been done to the human mind and is the key to encountering what is Real and Ultimate.

3. Eat Right:

There is a good reason why Ayurveda, the holistic science of health and healing, says that one should eat light and pure (satvic) food.  It is because it helps the body, mind and senses be more sensitive, and sensitivity is another way to describe a meditative life.

For meditators there are 2 aspects of eating right.  First, they should eat light and healthy food in general to promote alertness and sensitivity, and second, prior to sitting in meditation, they should not eat a heavy meal to avoid feeling sleepy and lethargic.

You can read more about right eating in the following 3 popular articles:

4. Find a Teacher, Book or Video:

In the article, 3 Simple Tips to Invite Enlightenment, I discussed how simply reading enlightened material can refine one’s energy, trigger kundalini and create shifts of consciousness.  Reading good books and learning from a good teacher can do a great deal more as well of course.

You can learn how to meditate correctly, be inspired and also, get their guidance on how to overcome blocks or obstacles. If you can find a great teacher near you, certainly take the opportunity to learn from them and if you need suggestions on some good books, you can check out the following article and comments thread…

5. Set a Meditation Time and Space:

I have written about this before and want to emphasize it again here.  Don’t underestimate the value of setting a definite time for meditation and creating a meditation space.  Both these items will be very useful to you in establishing a consistent, daily meditation practice, the value of which is immeasurable.

The following 2 articles go over these 2 items in detail and provide you many more tips and advice to help you meditate better.

One of the most popular article on the website, is How to Stop Negative Thinking.  The author of that post is Yachna Tyagi, who is a passionate yogi and terrific spiritual blogger, and today I am happy to present another great article from her – 6 Effective Anger Management Techniques.  If you enjoy Yachna’s articles, I strongly suggest checking out her blog at Yachna Yoga, which is a wonderful resource for Yoga, Meditation and Pranayama.

Yachna is also a graduate of the Mastery of Yoga Instructor Training Program and if you would like more information on that program you can find that on the following website Online Yoga Teacher Training.

how to control anger

How to Effortlessly Increase your Threshold for Anger and Stress

By

Yachna Tyagi

What if you could effortlessly increase your threshold for anger and stress without having to repress your emotions and feign complacence by seeking refuge in conventional anger management tools that just don’t seem to work for you?

Today’s article discusses some very simple and practical tips that will help detoxify your mind and body, grant you the ability to think clearly and rationally and help you retain your composure effortlessly, to make you feel simple, sweet, calm and collected.

What is Anger?

Anger is a strong negative emotion that we have all experienced at some time or another. It is often preceded by a bruised ego, impatience, or a sense of loss of control over a situation. Anger can range anywhere from simple annoyance to violent fury and can manifest as anywhere from splenetic behavior and speech to outright vile actions. Once vented, it almost always results in regret.

Occasional expression of anger in a reasonable manner is normal and necessary to prevent toxic build up inside our mind and body. Anger channeled in an unselfish direction becomes righteous indignation. But when one feels chronically angry even over trivial matters or feels the need to inflict injury on someone it should be regarded as a red flag that warrants attention and remediation.

Effects of Anger

Anger is really a destruction of the self, of one’s health, and peace of mind. It depletes the body of energy resulting in mental and physical fatigue. Chronic anger or cumulative build up of anger damages the nervous system. Anger activates the flight or fight response in the body which leads to a release of stress hormones cortisol and adrenaline into the blood stream. High levels of cortisol can lead to obesity, increase in blood sugar, a weakened immune system, heart disease, stroke, Cushing’s syndrome, loss of muscle tissue, high blood pressure, loss of bone density, etc. Anger impedes the flow of energy in the body and results in blockages and sickness.

6 Practical and Effective Anger Management Techniques and Tips

Implementing a few simple, but very powerful techniques listed below will guarantee you increased tranquility and fortitude. I would strongly recommend that these techniques be applied conscientiously for at least 10 days in order to notice a marked improvement.

1. PERFORM THESE PRANAYAM EXERCISES:

Chandrabhedi Pranayam:

Chandrabhedi pranayam is a very powerful breathing technique that stimulates the parasympathetic nervous system.  The parasympathetic nervous system is responsible for the non emergency or maintenance functions of the body like rest and digest in contrast to the sympathetic nervous system which prepares the body to operate under stress. Chandrabhedi pranayam pacifies the nerves, reduces anger, stress, blood pressure, bile and body heat and helps detoxify the blood.

Follow the steps below for Chandrabhedi Pranayam:

  1. Sit in a comfortable position with your spine erect and chin slightly tucked in.
  2. Rest your left palm down on your left knee.
  3. Press your right nostril with your right thumb and inhale deeply and slowly through your left nostril till you fill up your lungs completely.  Your chest should expand when you do this, not your stomach.
  4. Now release the pressure of your thumb on your right nostril and simultaneously press your left nostril with your ring finger and middle finger and exhale through the right nostril in a slow controlled manner.
  5. This constitutes one round of chandrabhedi pranayam.
  6. Do about 10-20 rounds daily up to twice a day depending on your temperament, inhaling through the left and exhaling through the right nostril.

Sheetali Pranayam  Perform 5-10 rounds or

Sheetkari Pranayam Perform 5-10 rounds (for those who cannot do sheetali pranayam)

NOTE:

The above pranayams help soothe and calm the nerves. They are quite cooling in nature and should be avoided in the cold winter months. But people who suffer from aggravated pitta or excess heat (which manifests as inflammation, boils, ulcers, heartburn, indigestion, premature graying, balding, IBS, constipation, skin diseases and who suffer from excessive or uncontrollable emotions of anger, irritability, rage, hatred, jealousy, hostility, impatience, pride etc) may continue to practice in the cold months adopting a common sense approach. For example, instead of doing 10-20 rounds of Chandrabhedi twice a day, you might want to do 5-10 once a day and see how if affects you.

Similarly in dry and cold climates, it is not advisable to practice Sheetali or Sheetkari. Each individual is advised to find their own comfort point. In a nutshell, listen to the signals your body sends you. Cut back or increase the practice accordingly to find your sweet spot.  Another caution to keep in mind is to never perform suryabhedi pranayam immediately after chandrabhedi pranayam or even on the same day as they are contradictory in nature. Chandrabhedi should also be avoided when one is suffering form cold or cold related ailments like asthma and bronchitis.

2. DIET AND COOLING HERBS:

Eliminate foods from your diet that increase pitta/bile or the fire element in the body and rajasic quality of mind. Rajasic quality manifests as passion, cut throat ambition, restlessness, anger, lust, pride etc. Usually these foods are sour, bitter, fried, temperature hot and also inherently hot, for example: pickles, peppers, onions, garlic, ginger, alcohol, caffeine, meat, mustard, tomatoes, spinach, mustard greens, yogurt, buttermilk, sour fruits, fruit juice, honey etc. These foods increase heat/pitta in the body and cause mental agitation and increase aggression.

Instead consume foods that are cooling in nature like avocado, mangoes, melons, pears, coconut, cherries, melons, cucumbers, apples (no green ones) and most vegetable and beans cooked in mild spices, basmati rice, wheat, milk, ghee, cilantro, basil, parsley, fennel, cardamoms, almonds soaked overnight and peeled the next day, herbal teas, sunflower seeds, flaxseed. You can also purchase organic pitta balancing herbs/tablets. These tablets contain cooling herbs like Brahmi, Bhringaraj, Shatavari, Fennel etc that help pacify the fire element in the body and restore balance.

3. DO NOT OVEREAT:

Overeating and eating in between meals increases the tamas (ignorance and sloth) quality in an individual. It results in sluggish metabolism and poor assimilation of food which leads to an accumulation of toxins in tissues thereby resulting in disease. Hence it is advisable to wait at least 3 ½ hours between meals.

4. MASSAGE:

Massage your scalp and feet with organic coconut massage oil, sunflower oil, or pitta balancing massage oil at least once a week and leave it on for roughly 30-45 minutes before you shower. If time permits you may massage your entire body starting from the scalp and working your way down to your feet. Self massage improves blood circulation and helps eliminate toxins through perspiration. Limit the use of coconut oil to summer time only as it is very cooling in nature.

5. MEDITATE:

We are all aware of the wonderful benefits of peace and tranquility that meditation can bestow upon us. If you are new to meditation or find it hard to meditate, practicing guided meditations or mantra meditations that involve chanting mantras can be equally powerful. For example, the Aum Mantra Meditation practiced daily for 30 minutes would be ideal, but if time is an issue, spending even a minimum of 15 minutes can prove to be highly effective.

Meditation will help one feel centered and grounded. It is better to spend 15 minutes of energy and attention intensely focused on meditation than to spend 45 minutes on the mat checking the clock.  According to Patanjali’s Yoga Sutras-“ When the agitations of the mind are under control, the mind becomes like a transparent crystal and has the power of comprehending the smallest as well as the greatest – as it is free from all limitations and conditionings.”

6. PRACTICE SELF AWARENESS:

Practice awareness in thought, word and deed. Eliminating negative thinking and encouraging positive thoughts helps strengthen and balance Ojas, Tejas and Prana. When these three are balanced, one enjoys perfect health in mind, body and spirit.

These are some simple yet powerful guidelines to get you started on your way to anger management and help you achieve significant results. Remember 50% of something (good) is better than 100% of nothing. You will be absolutely amazed with the results and might consider adopting the suggestions above and making them an integral part of your daily life. Once you have achieved some level of balance you may judiciously include some of the blacklisted foods above occasionally and in moderate quantities.

If you suffer from anger and stress, I do hope you will try out some of these excellent anger management techniques, and once again here is Yachna’s blog for you to enjoy and learn from – Yachna Yoga (http://yachnayoga.wordpress.com/)

3 Powerful Yogic Breathing Exercises for Energy

Yogic Breathing

Powerful Breathing Exercises

To boost your energy levels, both short term and long term, there is almost no better method than the regular practice of yogic breathing exercises (pranayamas).  These exercises have been developed and honed over thousands of years to bestow their powerful benefits, so if you are looking for more vitality and energy, I strongly recommend establishing a consistent, daily pranayama practice.

Yogic Breathing

To get you started, here are 3 terrific yogic breathing techniques known to power your energetic systems.  The first is a new technique that I am introducing you to and it will be added to our Free Online Yoga Breathing Exercises Collection.

So, you really want to get an infusion of energy?  Are you ready to upgrade your order to SUPER SIZE :-)?  Well here is a unique pranayama which is going to put together 2 techniques, which are already considered amongst the best exercises for increasing energy, into one.  The 2 techniques are Kundalini Yoga’s Breath of Fire Breathing Exercise and Hatha Yoga’s Surya Bedi Pranayama and for this exercise your are going to do Breath of Fire exclusively through the Right Nostril.

As I mentioned above, Breath of Fire is excellent for increasing energy and so is Surya Bedi Pranayama (Right Nostril Breathing), so you can imagine what combining these 2 would do!

To practice this pranayama, block your left nostril with your left thumb, then do Breath of Fire through just the Right Nostril.  Start with 15 seconds and build up to 3 minutes.  Don’t do more than that, as this exercise is too potent.  The benefits it will bestow are the combined benefits of both the pranayamas is uses.

This simple breathing exercise of pressing your hands together in Namaste Pose, and inhaling in 4 parts and exhaling in 4 parts, is a great way to fire your energy pathways and get your entire system buzzing.  It is one of the most used yogic breathing techniques for starting a yoga class, as it gets you going and ready for the rest of the routine.

Here is a quick list of the benefits of this exercise:
  • Rapidly oxygenates your blood, thus helping the body heal, detoxify and remove waste more effectively.
  • Increases the amount of Prana (life-force) you are bringing into your system.
  • Improves the elasticity of the lungs and increases respiratory capacity.
  • Activates the energy flows in your body.

Undoubtedly considered one of the best yoga breathing techniques for increasing energy is the Hatha Yoga version of the Breath of Fire.  It is immensely powerful and extremely effective.  Be careful not to get dizzy while doing this potent exercise.  This pranayama is also good for burning fat and promoting weight loss.

Energy Boosting Yoga Breathing Exercises Summary:

One of the earliest benefits of yoga practice is the significant boost in energy that yogis experience, and one of the key reasons for that is the yogic breathing that is practiced as part of any good yoga routine.  The above 3 techniques are good choices for acquiring such benefits and you can see how they are integrated into daily yoga routines by checking out the Free Online Yoga Classes here on Mastery of Meditation and Yoga.

True Inspirational Stories of God Realization

Real Inspiring Stories

Experiences of God Realization

Previously I provided real life testimonials from readers who were practicing the techniques on the website and making progress towards health, happiness and God Realization, but in this series I will provide some truly inspirational stories of some mind blowing experience readers have written to me about.

One of the great blessings and privileges of running a large spiritual blog is that I get to befriend some truly remarkable people, whose experiences and life stories are not just astonishing, but also incredibly inspiring and enlightening.  With their permission I am honored to share with you the great insights they have acquired and I hope you are as equally encouraged by these testimonials as I am.

Real Inspiring Stories

One of the key challenges in spiritual progress, is to keep going and see it through to the very end, and to help us stay on the path, such inspiring people and inspiring stories are very helpful.  All I can say after reading so many incredible tales is that life is a great mystery, and that our self-indulgent, endlessly busy mind only sees a very small fraction of the great wonder that this Universe holds.  I can also say that the more I realize, the more I am awed by the unfathomable power and grace of God.

The experience described below is from just such a friend I have made through the blog, who thankfully takes the time out to share with me some of the sights and sounds of his spiritual journey.

How special is he?  He will say he is not special, only God is.  How do I know this?  When I asked him if I should credit him with the quote, his reply was the following:

There is no need to use my name for the article because God deserves all the credit.  He is all and He is in all, nothing is separate from Him.

Not even a single breath belongs to us, we are alive and the whole creation is running due to His grace.

But sadly most of us have forgotten Him because we are so busy with our little “I”.

Forget his story about God Realization, that reply in itself is inspirational .  In any case, below you find a description of some true spiritual experiences that my friend has generously shared with us.  His real life story is full of great insights and below the excerpt, I highlight some of them in the summary section.

My friend writes:

Since my spiritual practice I have progressed well and wanted to share with you one of my spiritual experiences during meditation.  I hear the sound “OM” coming from my heart chakra, sometimes during and after meditation I feel tremendous happiness without any reason and I am in that blissful state for hours or days.

During meditation I become thoughtless.  There is no thoughts, no mind, no physical body and there is me who is just an awareness watching the whole process.  I see that I am not the body and mind, and that my own personality is just a fake illusion of mind and ego.

One of the most interesting experiences I had was that one day during meditation first I started to see some white and golden lights in my forehead.  After that the lights where everywhere.  Then a very beautiful and radiant lady appeared before me and her presence was very peaceful.

She looked like an Indian deity but I could not recognize her then she chanted some mantras and at that moment my state of consciousness was pushed to a very high state.  Its difficult for me to explain in words that high state of consciousness, only through experience one can understand it.

When I was in that high state of consciousness I could see the whole universe as me.  I could feel that the whole universe and every living being is part of me.  I was every animals, insects, mountain, plant, water, sea etc.  Practically I was part of everything.

During that high state of consciousness I realized that I am immortal.  I am not the body or mind, I am Atma all transcending eternal being.

This experience has changed and taught me many things.  Now I have a lot of respect for every living being and there is no fear of death.

In this world, people run after their desires like money, name, fame etc.  And the list of their desires is endless.  Even if a person achieves their material goals, after a little time he becomes unhappy like before and wants more and more.

People don’t realize that desires will only lead to more suffering and unhappiness.

We all know that when we come and go from this transitory world we never take with us the material things, name, fame etc.  So why are we running behind all these things which will perish with time.  The root cause of all this is our desires and attachments, which are created by our own mind.

It is very true that the mind creates bondage and also, the mind leads one to true liberation.  But for that one has to bring the mind under control with arduous spiritual practice and the most important thing is the purest longing to realize God.  Only then God will reveal himself to that soul.

We should all give thanks to God for giving us the greatest gift of life because now we are born like human beings.  Who knows how many incarnations we have to go through before taking birth as a human being and so we should use this life very wisely.

I bow to the lotus feet Lord for bestowing his grace upon me.

Om Namah Shivaya

True Inspirational Story Highlights:

I don’t know what not to highlight from the above note .  It is so packed with wisdom and inspiration that it is hard to pick and choose.  But, in any case, here are some points from the experiences that are worth reiterating.

1. Witnessing Consciousness:

Develop your witnessing consciousness, be constantly Mindful.  Learn to simply be a witness to all that is taking place.  I have written about this many times, most recently in the article Shri Ramana Maharishi Teachings on Meditation.  In my view, this is the most important spiritual practice of all.

2. Live in Peace and with Compassion:

This is something you can aspire to, regardless of whether you have mind blowing enlightenment experiences or not.  Respect all of life and please stop fighting with each other.  This whole world is yours.  It is a integral part of you.  It is you.

The following 3 article delve into this more deeply.  But for starters, live in peace.

3. God Realization – Self Realization:

The greatest blessing one can have is an abiding passion for the Truth or God.  If you have this, you have all you need to fulfill your purpose on Earth.

More on the importance of this passion in the following article:

Silent Mind Meditation Program – Passion

4. Suffering:

As my friend points out clearly above, the root cause of all suffering is desire and attachments, and there are no end to desires.  So evaluate how you wish to spend your energy and time in this precious life God has blessed you with.

The articles below discuss this topic further:

5. Inspiration:

The reason I have started this series is to help inspire you and keep your passion for God Realization burning bright.  I hope you find it motivating and stay tuned for more true stories from readers just like you.

For training your abs, there are 2 great sets currently on the website, Core Abdominal Power Yoga Set and the Terrific Yoga Ab Exercises and Workout for Shaping Stomach, and today I will give a pure Kundalini Yoga exercise to supplement these sets and help you max out your ab workout.  At first glace, this particular technique may not appear be a great ab training tool, but if done correctly, it is quite effective in helping you tone and strengthen your stomach muscles and core.

The great part of this technique is that it is very different from your usual abdominal exercises and I have found many students, specially the ones with a creative and artistic side, really enjoy doing it.  This exercise, like Kapalbhati Pranayama, works your abs by the pumping motion it incorporates, but unlike most other exercises, it uses sound power to further accent the effect.

yoga for abs

That’s the reason I titled this article, pure yoga technique.  It is because this technique uses a mantra to help you work your core.  That’s right, a mantra for abdominal training .  This technique uses the sound “HAR” or “HARRRRR”, which rhymes with “BURRRR”, and which is considered a sound for awakening the Navel Chakra and is associated with the stomach and abdominal region.  Just go ahead and make this sound powerfully now, and immediately you will feel your abdominal muscles going to work.  I call this technique Abdominal Training with Yogic HAR.

Details of how to do this exercise are in the practice section below.  Abdominal Training with Yogic HAR will be added to our free ongoing yoga exercises e-book, which you can find here: Online Kundalini Yoga Exercises e-book.  In addition, be on the lookout for yoga sets incorporating this exercise in the near future here: Free Online Kundalini Yoga Sets.  Also, be sure to check out the Free Online Yoga Classes that we already offer on the website.

At the bottom of this article I have provided some more pure yoga exercises for abdominal training, so be sure to check those out as well.  As always, please follow the guidelines for yoga I have laid out in the following articles…

Abdominal Training with Yogic HAR:

A. How to Do this Pure Yoga Technique:

  • Here is an exercise which is going to work your abs, without a lot of movement .  Sit up straight with your legs crossed or sit on your heels.  You can also sit on a chair for this technique.  Just make sure your back and spine are straight.
  • Next, interlace your fingers and extend your arms straight out as I have shown in the illustrations above.
  • Now take a deep breath and chant out loud with POWER.  HAR HAR HAR HAR (Very Fast) (Pause Slightly) HAR HAR HAR HAR (Very Fast) (Pause Slightly) HARRR HARRR HARRR (slow).  So you will say out loud, with power 4 times HAR HAR HAR HAR very fast, then again after a slight pause HAR HAR HAR HAR very fast, and then after a slight pause say HARRRR HARRR HARRR 3 times, with each of these HARRRs slow and with emphasis.  In addition, with each HAR you will consciously pull your stomach wall back towards your spine (pump your stomach/suck it in). For the fast HAR HAR HAR HARs you will only be able to pump your stomach lightly, but for each of the slow 3 HARRRs pump your stomach with FORCE. You can say the HARs as loud as you want.  Don’t wake the neighbors .
  • Take deep breaths whenever you need to, and also take a break when you need to.  See how the sound HAR explodes from the ab region.
  • If you are doing it correctly you will start to feel your ab muscles burn and fatigue in due course.  Continue on for the duration of the exercise.

B. Duration for Ab Training with HAR: 30 seconds – 11 minutes.

C. Benefits of Pure Yoga HAR Ab Exercise:

  • Good technique for training your abs and strengthening your core.
  • Balances and awakens the Navel Chakra (Manipura Chakra).
  • Build willpower and strength of character.
  • Helps the respiratory system.
  • Increases energy and gives vitality and vigor.

D. Practice Tips and Cautions for Abdominal Training with Yogic HAR:

  • For this technique to be successful some intensity is needed from your side.  So don’t be shy when practicing the chanting and really let the sound HARRR HARRR HARRR, explode from your tummy.
  • For those looking to do Third Chakra work, this is an excellent exercise for you.
  • Doing this in a group or a yoga class is a lot of fun, so be sure to try it in class if you are a teacher.
  • Kids love this exercise so do it with them too.
  • This exercise is something you can add to the end of the abdominal sets you do.

More Pure Yoga Ab Exercises:

In addition to Yogic HAR for Abdominal and Core Power, there are several other exercises from yoga which are great for ab training and below are 3 more for you to enjoy and benefit from…

Exercise for Fast Abs

Yoga Sit Ups for Building Abs

One of the important factors to optimize fitness gains is to introduce variety in the exercises you use to target various muscle groups, and in that way abs and stomach muscles are no different.  Not only does variety help keep your fitness and yoga routines fresh, but it also help to challenge the muscles in different ways which is essential to their development and strength.  So I think for those who have been doing the various ab exercises and workout already on the blog, such as Core Abdominal Power Yoga Set or the Terrific Yoga Ab Exercises and Workout for Shaping Stomach, it is time to introduce you to the another excellent technique for getting a fast ab workout, the potent Yoga Situps.

yoga abs

As you would expect, Kundalini Yoga exercises will certainly keep you moving and try to exploit the value of dynamic pressures to help rejuvenate, heal and strengthen various regions of the body.  And Kundalini Yoga Sit Ups are no different.  Kundalini Yoga emphasizes speed in terms of bestowing results and in this case the focus is the same here as well.  To target the abs and accelerate their development as fast as possible.  This particular exercise targets, at one time, both the lower abdominal as well as the upper abdominal, so it is a great way to work the entire stomach and develop six-pack abs fast.

The drawback to using fast and powerful techniques is that they come with dangers of injury, so you really need to be cautious when using these potent exercises.  To that end please follow all the guidelines I have laid out in the following documents prior to practicing these Kundlaini Yoga exercises and workouts.

Beginner’s Guide to Yoga Practice

Guidelines for Kundalini Yoga Practice

Yoga Sit-ups Overview:

Kundalini Yoga Sit-ups combine several postures into one fluid and ab busting motion.  It combines Forward Bend, Corpse Pose and Plough Pose into one exercise which will give you one hell of an ab workout.  If you are interested in fast ab results and quick six-pack abs, then doing these Yoga Situps are just what the doctor ordered.  Not too easy, but a lot of fun and great results.  As we are approaching the summer here in the US, I will be providing you more great yoga exercises for getting flat, toned abs, in the near future so you can enjoy the body you have been gifted.  So be on the lookout for those.

Yoga Sit Ups will be added to our free ongoing yoga exercises e-book, which you can find here: Online Kundalini Yoga Exercises e-book.  In addition, be on the lookout for yoga sets incorporating this exercise in the near future here: Free Online Kundalini Yoga Sets.  And also, be sure to check out the Free Online Yoga Classes that we already offer on the website.

Below are all the details, along with illustrations for Yoga Sits, do them regularly and washboard abs are yours.

Yoga Situps Fast Ab Exercise:

A. How to Do Yoga Situps:

  • Start as shown above in Illustration #1 – Yoga Situps Starting Position.  Please note you do not have to reach your toes or have to have your head reach your knees.  Just reach forward as far as possible.
  • From this position start to lie back and come into Corpse Pose.  In Corpse Pose you are simply lying on your back with your arms to your side and legs extended.
  • Now swing your legs over and come into Plough Pose which is Illustration #2 above.  The only difference is your hands DO NOT have to come up to support your lower back, instead just keep them flat on the ground as they were when you came down into Corpse Pose.  Also, you do not need to tap the floor with your toes if you cannot reach that far back.  Just swing them over as much as comfortable and be careful with your neck.
  • Next swing your legs back down and come back into Illustration #1 position.  As you swing your legs over and down, bring your upper body back up and reach forward with your arms towards your toes.  Continue on in a smooth motion in this way.
  • Variation for advanced practitioners.
  • If you are ready for a slightly tougher challenge and ready to blast your abs even more do the following sequence.
  • Lie on your back with your arms stretched out OVER your head and ON the floor behind you.
  • Then swing up and come into Illustration #1 above.  Again as you come up reach forward with your arms towards your toes.
  • Next as you come down let the arms come to your side as in corpse pose and swing your legs over into Plough Pose (Illustration #2) above.  Again your arms stay flat on the floor besides you and do not have to come up to support your lower back.
  • Next, as you swing your legs over and down, SWING YOUR ARMS back up and over so they are stretched out on the floor behind you (the position where you started).
  • Then come up and into Forward Bend again and continue from there.  Soon your abs will be burning and core will be getting stronger and fitter.
  • To breathe.  Inhale when you lie back during the transitions and exhale when you come into Forward Bend and Plough Pose.

B. Duration for Yoga Situps Ab Exercise: 15 seconds – 11 minutes.

C. Benefits of Yoga Situps Ab Workout:

  • Excellent for strengthening abdominal and stomach muscles.
  • Great for toning abs and getting six pack abs.
  • Great overall workout.
  • Excellent for flexibility.
  • Good for digestive system and internal cleansing.
  • Stimulates blood flow and helps overall health and well being.
  • Excellent exercise for weight loss and burning fat.

D. Practice Tips and Cautions for Yoga Sit Ups Fast Ab Workout:

  • Please stretch before doing this exercise.  Specially your hamstrings.
  • Do not over stretch in either pose.  Only stretch as far as comfortable.
  • Careful when coming into Plough Pose, especially with your neck.
  • You should do Forward Bend and Plough Pose first before doing the situps.
  • Even though this exercise will work your abs very fast, I suggest slow and steady as the best and safest way for developing fitness and strength.  So feel free to take breaks in between doing these situps.
  • This exercise can replace any current ab exercise you have in your workout.

More Ab Exercises:

In addition to the ab workouts I mentioned in the beginning of the article, there are more excellent yoga exercise on the website to work out core and here are a few of them…

Senior Yoga Guidelines:

Of course if you are elderly please first check with your medical service provider before starting any new fitness or yoga routine.  Then also please take it slow and gently, allowing your body to adjust and develop as you deepen your yoga practice.  Below also are some important article with guidelines that you should follow when practicing yoga and pranayama (yoga breathing exercises).

Beginner’s Guide to Yoga Practice
10 Important Guidelines to Kundalini Yoga Practice
Beginner’s Guide to Pranayama Practice

Yoga Breathing Exercises for Seniors

A good way to start off your yoga practice is with a good set of breathing exercises.  These exercises have a wide range of wonderful benefits, which are detailed in each of the articles referenced below.  You can do this set sitting on a chair or sitting cross legged.  The full details of this particular set can be found in the article: Simple Chair Yoga for Energy and Stress Relief.  Again, please make sure you go nice and slow and don’t overdo it.

Simple Yoga Breathing Exercises Set:

Follow the step-by-step instructions below to do the Simple Yoga Pranayama set:

  • Sit up nice and straight and have your feet flat on the floor.  Try not to use the back support of your chair if you are using one.
  • Elongate your spine upwards and bring your neck back slightly, like a soldier at attention.
  • Place your hands on your knees, relax your shoulders and let your stomach become soft and relaxed as well.  You can close your eyes of if you like.
  • Now begin the beginner’s version of Bhastrika Pranayama.  Here all I want you to do is breathe deeply.  Let your abdomen and chest expand fully on the inhalation, and let them contract completely on the exhalation.  Continue to do this long deep breathing for 1 full minute.  This exercise will relax you and help your entire respiratory system.
  • Next begin Breath of Fire Kundalini Yoga style for 1 full minute.  Keep in mind that if at any time you start to feel dizzy or feel you are overdoing it, either slow down or switch to normal breathing till you feel ready to continue again.  The other key with Breath of Fire is to make sure your inhalation and exhalation are equal, or you will end up with too much or too little air and have to reset and restart.  Breath of Fire is going to wake you up, get your energy flowing and harmonize your entire system.
  • Next do 1 minute of the wonderful Kapalbhati Yoga Pranayama.  This is a great exercise to optimize your health and help your body heal.  While doing this exercise make sure you visualize any negativity leaving your system with each exhalation.
  • Finally, do the following breathing pattern for the last 2 minutes to really soothe your system, focus your mind and help you feel integrated, centered and connected.  This is called Step Breathing.  Inhale slowly taking 5 seconds to complete the inhalation, hold your breath in for 5 seconds, exhale slowly taking 5 seconds to complete the exhalation and then hold your breath out for 5 seconds.  So 1 entire cycle will take 20 seconds, and you will be able to do 6 full rounds of this breathing in the 2 minutes.  If the 5 second intervals are too much initially, just start with 2, 3 seconds or 4 seconds and work your way up.
  • After you are done with your set close your eyes and relax for a few minutes.

Yoga Exercises for Seniors:

For the yoga set and yoga practice I have 2 good recommendations for seniors and the elderly.  They are the following 2 yoga sets which you can find on the website.  Both are excellent to do and both consist of simple, but highly rewarding exercises.  These 2 sets are the Spinal Warm-up Yoga Set and the Basic Yoga Set for Beginners.  You can even do both sets if you like, with Spinal Warm-up first, followed by the Basic Yoga Set for Beginners.  I have provided a modified version of the Beginner’s Yoga Set which I think will be even more suitable for seniors below.

Spinal Warm-up Yoga Set for Seniors:

As mentioned above the Spinal Warm-up Yoga Exercises is excellent for seniors and you can start with that set if you like.  Here is the video for that set.

Simple Yoga Set for Seniors:

Remember that each title is a link to the article with full details on each pose.  Also, in each of those respective articles, modifications for beginners is given whenever required, so make sure you use those modifications as you start out.

1. Kundalini Yoga Butterfly Pose:

  • Duration: 2 – 3 mins
  • Breath: Breath of Fire

Butterfly Pose

2. Kundalini Yoga Cat-Cow Pose:

  • Duration: 1 – 3 mins
  • Breath: Inhale in cow pose, exhale in cat pose

Yoga Cat Pose (Exhale)

Yoga Cow Pose (Inhale)

3. Yoga Cobra Pose:

  • This is a very basic yoga pose that is part of every school of yoga practice.  It can be done with the elbows bent and also done with the elbow straight.  Beginner’s should be careful with their lower back and elbows, and should take frequent breaks if they get tiered holding the pose.
  • Duration: 1 – 3 mins
  • Breath: Long deep breathing.

Cobra Pose w/ Straight Elbows

Cobra Pose w/ Bent Elbows

4. Yoga Baby Pose:

  • Another very basic yoga pose is baby pose.  It is pose #8 in the article.  It is a good pose to relax in whenever you need to take break during your yoga session.  In addition this pose will counterbalance cobra pose for you.
  • Duration: Open
  • Breath: Normal.

Baby Pose

5. Basic Yoga Pose for Balance:

  • Be sure to use the modified versions if you find doing the full version difficult.  This is a great pose for the elderly to do.  Just do one arm or one leg at a time if doing both is too difficult.
  • Duration: 1 – 2 mins / side.
  • Breath: Long deep breathing.

Basic Yoga Pose for Balance (Left Arm)

Basic Yoga Pose for Balance (Right Arm)

6. Forward Bending Yoga Asana:

  • The important part of this position is to keep your legs straight.  It is not necessary to reach your toes, that will happen over time.  Just reach forward as far as is comfortable, while keeping your legs straight.  For seniors even reaching their knees or shins is fine.  Curl your toes back towards you though, even if you do can’t reach them to accent the stretch in your calves and hamstrings.
  • Duration: 1 – 3 mins
  • Breath:  Do long deep breathing.  As you make progress you can do this pose with breath of fire.

Forward Bending Yoga Pose

7. Alternating Leg Lifts for Abdominal Strength:

  • Simply lie on your back, with your hands underneath your buttocks palms facing down to support your lower back.  Then lift your left leg up to ninety degrees and lower it back down.  Next lift your right leg up to ninety degrees and then back down.  Continue on with these alternating leg lifts for the duration of the exercise.  It is exercise #1 of the Ab Workout set which it is linked to.   BTW, this set is an excellent set for beginner’s as well who want to tone their abs and build their core strength.
  • Duration: 1 – 3 mins
  • Breath: Inhale Up / Exhale Down.

Yoga Single Leg Lifts (Right Leg)

Yoga Single Leg Lifts (Left Leg)

8. Kundalini Yoga Stretch Pose:

  • This is a terrific yoga posture, remember the beginner’s version is to do one leg at a time instead.  I suggest for seniors to start with just one leg at a time.  They can even keep their heads down if they like.  Again you can take breaks during this pose when you tire.  The full version is illustrated below.
  • Duration: 1 – 3 mins
  • Breath:  Breath of Fire

9. Kundalini Yoga Archer Pose:

  • We will end this set with Archer’s Pose.  This pose is excellent for opening up your hips, strengthening your legs and helping you cope with stress.  It is also good for the mind and developing confidence.
  • Duration: 1 – 3 mins / side
  • Breath: Long Deep Powerful Breathing.

Yoga Archer Pose

10. Corpse Pose:

  • Once you are done with the Beginner’s Yoga Set, make sure you relax on your back in corpse pose.  For corpse pose just lie comfortably on your back and have your hands out to the sides or on your chest.  Just let go during this time and let the Universe take care of you.  Have no worries, anxieties or goals, and simply surrender to Infinity.
  • Duration: 1 – 11 mins
  • Breath: Relaxed

Senior Yoga Summary:

The yoga sets and exercises above are an excellent way for you to keep your energy up and body and mind in shape as you age.  For those of you who are enjoying the abundance of youth, the time is now to begin a good yoga practice which will then stand by you for the rest of your life.
