Yogic Breathing to Purify and Energize Self

The 3 pranayamas  (yoga breathing techniques) that make up this wonderful set are in and of themselves very effective exercises.  Each of them can be used independently to provide the many benefits they bestow and are a key part of many of the free online yoga classes offered on this site.  In today’s article though I will combine these 3 pranayamas to provide a particularly powerful effect, which will help purify and cleanse your systems as well as infuse you with tremendous energy.

This set is called, Yoga Breathing for Purification and the 3 techniques that make it up are…

This combination is quite unusual and as you will experience it will create a great deal of energy within you and then allow the energy to propel itself internally.

yoga breathing technique

Benefits of Purification Set:

  • Increase lung capacity and improve the respiratory system
  • Bestow peace and tranquility
  • Energize the body and revitalize the organs
  • Improve circulation
  • Purify the subtle energy channels
  • Increase mind power and inner strength

Cautions of Purification Set:

  • As this set involves breath retention you should only do as much as comfortable and not push too hard.  Especially you will notice that after the vigorous exercises, when you do Anuloma Viloma you can have a lot of inner pathways bursting with energy and prana, so please be sensible in your approach.
  • If you feel dizzy or nauseous when doing Bhastrika Pranayama or Staccato breathing, back off and either take a break or if its mild substitute with long deep breathing.
  • Start off slowly with regard to the timings and build up as you get stronger and your capacity increases.

How to do the 3 Breathing Exercises:

Bhastika Pranayama has been explained in detail in the following article, so please study that for details: Yoga Breathing Exercise to Burn Fat.

Staccato Breathing:  Staccato breathing is segmented breathing done in the following way.  You will break up the inhalation into 5 parts.  Which means that you will take 5 small sniffs through the nose, one after the other, to complete 1 inhalation.  Make sure by the 5th sniff you have filled your lungs to capacity.  Then you will breathe out forcefully through the mouth in one explosive exhalation to empty the lungs of air.  So these 5 sniffs to make 1 inhalation and 1 exhalation through the mouth makes up 1 round.  The number of rounds you will do is explained below.

Anuloma Viloma has been explained in detail in the following article, so please study that for details:  Chakra Balancing Yoga Pranayama.   For the purpose of this set we are using a slight variation of this technique and that is explained below in the instructions.  Here is a video on how to do this exercise as well.

Anuloma Viloma Pranayama Video

Purification Set Instructions:

Beginner’s Version:

Do 10 rounds of Bhastrika Pranayama at a normal pace.

Do 10 rounds of Staccato Breathing.

Do Anuloma Viloma (Alternate Nostril Breathing) in the following sequence.  Breath in through left nostril, breathe out through right nostril, breathe in through right nostril, breathe out through left nostril.  Each segment should take 5 seconds, so count slowly from 1 to 5 as you do each part.  Do 3 rounds in this manner.

Once you are comfortable with doing the above sequence, move on to the next stage.

Intermediate Version:

Build up Bhaktrika Pranayama to 1 minute at a fast pace.

Build up Staccato Breathing to 1 minute.

Build up Anuloma Viloma to 3 minutes.

Advanced Version:

Build up Bhaktrika Pranayama to 3 minutes at a fast pace.

Build up Staccato Breathing to 3 minutes.

Do 8 rounds of Anuloma Viloma with the following variation.  Note each round will take 40 seconds.

  • Inhale through left nostril counting slowly from 1 to 5.
  • Hold your breath in for count of 5.
  • Exhale through right nostril counting slowly from 1 to 5.
  • Hold your breath out for count of 5.
  • Inhale through right nostril counting slowly from 1 to 5.
  • Hold your breath in for count of 5.
  • Exhale slowly through left nostril counting slowly from 1 to 5.
  • Hold your breath out for count of 5.

After doing the advanced version I suggest resting in corpse pose for 3 minutes to let the body assimilate the benefits of this set.

Yoga for Purification Conclusion:

The set can be practiced up to 2 times a day, morning or evening.  It is also fine to just practice is once if that is what your schedule allows for.

I do want to mention that this set is quite powerful when done correctly using the advanced techniques.  Especially doing Anuloma Viloma at the end.  You could have some profound experiences during that stage, but as it uses breath retention I want to again mention that you should progress gently.  Listen to your body and heart and don’t push too far too fast.

If you enjoy this set please do share it with others using the Social Bookmarking icons below :-).

Visualization Yoga Technique for Aura Healing

Healing Your Aura

It has been some time since I published a technique to do aura healing.  Previously I wrote about 2 useful techniques for working on your aura and they are Eagle Pose for Powerful Aura and Yoga Criss-Cross for Aura Cleansing.  Today’s technique though is quite different from these 2 techniques as it has a very large visualization and mental component.  So for those who are artistic or visual in nature, this technique will be perfect for you :-).

This technique is usually part of a set specifically designed to work on your aura, but of that set it is generally the key exercise.  I suggest doing these exercises independently as a mini set, or adding them to to end of a routine focused on energy and refinement.

Chakra Center Aura

Your aura, as per Kundalini Yoga, is the sum total power of your nervous system and it reflects the power of the prana or life force flowing through you.  The greater your aura the more magnetic and influential you can be, and those that have great presence and charisma are those who have a strong, bright aura.

When it comes to health, healing and working on yourself, it is important not to overlook the power and influence of your mind and this particular technique exploits that dimension.  Specifically, it uses the power of visualization to help you develop and energize your aura.

Yogic Breathing for Aura Purification:

As I explained above, auric power is a reflection of pranic power, so the more clear your channels the better the flow of prana (life force) and the brighter and clearer your aura.  So along with physical and mental exercises, breathing techniques are also excellent for healing your aura.  Below are 2 such techniques which are very useful for this.

You can use these breathing exercises to create your own aura healing set.  Do them first and then do the aura healing technique.

Anuloma Viloma Pranayama

Bhaktrika Yoga Pranayama

More Yoga Exercises and Stretches:

In addition to the exercises and poses above, you will find more yoga techniques in the following 2 online collections – Free Hatha Yoga Galleries and Free Kundalini Yoga Exercises.  Also, you will find more useful breathing exercises in the Free Online Yoga Pranayama Collection

For Yoga and Meditation Certification Course Students:

For students enrolled in the Online Yoga Teacher Training and Certification Course or Online Meditation Certification Program, note that these poses are challenging to hold for extended periods of time.  So the best way to motivate your students to do these postures is to do them yourself along with the class.  This way you are leading by example and you are also working on healing and cleansing your own aura at the same time :-).

Aura Healing Technique

Below please find details of how to practice this technique, along with illustrations, step-by-step instructions, benefits, cautions and practice tips.

Aura Healing Visualization Right to Left
Aura Healing Right to Left – Illustration #1
Aura Healing - Left to Right
Aura Healing Left to Right – Illustration #2
Aura Healing - Both Arms
Aura Healing Visualization – Illustration #3

A. How to do Aura Healing:

  • Start by sitting up straight with your legs crossed.  Close your eyes.  If you cannot sit cross legged you may sit up on a chair.  It is important to keep you back straight though.
  • Take 5 slow deep breaths and clear your mind of all worries, anxieties and fears.  Relax.
  • Next lift your right arm straight up with palm facing in and fingers extended and left arm straight out to the side, with palm facing up and fingers extended, as shown in Illustration #1 above.
  • Now begin the Breath of Fire Breathing Exercise.  And while holding this position, visualize a waterfall emanating from your right palm, arching down and falling onto your left palm.  If you have trouble visualizing a waterfall, you can visualize a white, bright beam of light arcing between your right palm and left palm.  If you have trouble keeping up with Breath of Fire, switch to Long Deep Breathing instead.  Hold and continue to visualize for a duration that is comfortable for you.
  • Next reverse the arm positions as shown in Illustration #2 above and again do the visualization along with the Breath of Fire.  Continue for an equal time.
  • Finally, extend both arms out to the sides, with palms facing up and fingers extended and visualize the waterfall or semicircle of light flowing between the 2 palms.  Remember to continue with the Breath of Fire.
  • To end, lower your arms to your lap, switch to long deep breathing and for 5 slow breaths visualize yourself with a shinning bright white aura.  End with a smile.

B. Duration:

  • Depending on your capacity, start with 15 seconds for each phase of this exercise and build up from there. You can do up to 3 minutes per phase.

C. Aura Healing Benefits:

  • Helps to heal, charge and energize your aura.
  • Increases your charisma and magnetism.
  • Makes you more influential and powerful.
  • Protects you from negative energies.
  • Improves your lung capacity and strengthens your shoulders.
  • Helps you develop your power of visualization and creativity.

D. Practice Tips for Aura Healing:

  • If you are new to doing Breath of Fire and are having trouble with it, this is not uncommon so don’t fret.  It takes time to get this breathing correct.  Exclusively practice Breath of Fire for 1-3 minutes daily and it will help you master it. In the meantime use long deep breathing for the aura healing technique.
  • If your arms get tired, you can lower them and place them in Cosmic Mudra, but continue to do the visualization and breathing.
  • Remember with regard to discomfort, that often the mind gives out first, so impose your spirit over your mind and go further than you think you can.

September Yoga Exercises for Nerves of Steel

Fitness and Yoga

Exercises for Nerve Strength

Real fitness, as per Yoga, is not just physical strength and endurance, but is actually nerve strength and pranic (life-force/chi) capacity.  In other words, how strong your nervous system is, how much current (Kundalini) can it handle and how well it holds up under stress, is how yoga measures your level of fitness and conditioning.

So for the month of September, let us develop this key aspect of our being, so we can proclaim ourselves to be yoga fit.  To do this, you will find below an excellent hatha yoga pose known to help develop nerve strength and an excellent yoga breathing exercise to expand your pranic capacity and build your entire nervous system.

The yoga pose we will practice together is called Downward Facing Dog, while the breathing exercise is Anuloma Viloma pranayama.  I will specify the variations to use for both these techniques, in order to extract the maximum nerve fitness from them that we can.

Yoga fitness

These exercises will be the yoga techniques for the month of September and will be part of our yoga practice for the month series.  For those who are new to the blog, each month we practice together particular yoga exercises and meditations, in order to enhance our skills and learn from each other.  We share our experiences in the comments section below as well.  So join us this month and move closer to being truly fit and formidable.  Move closer to having nerves of steel .

Yoga Exercise for Nerve Fitness:

One of the most popular and common yoga technique is Yoga Mountain Pose or Downward Facing Dog.  This exercise is excellent for a variety of reasons, not the least of which is it’s benefit to the nervous system.  This pose is part of all schools of yoga, including Hatha Yoga and Kundalini Yoga.

For our purposes I want you to practice this pose using powerful Breath of Fire.  This will further increase the benefits of Downward Facing Dog for nerve fitness and Pranic Power.  In addition, if your arms or legs tire, take a break, continue the Breath of Fire if you can and then come into the pose once again. You may repeat that several time if necessary.

Here is the link to the full article for Downward Facing Dog –  Hatha Yoga Pose for Nerve Fitness.

Downward Facing Dog for Nerve Power

Yoga Pranayama for Pranic Fitness:

In conjunction with Downward Facing Dog, I suggest you incorporate Anuloma Viloma Pranayama into your practice as well.  This breathing exercise purifies, refines and strengthens your nervous system and increases your respiratory fitness.  It gives you more prana and great internal balance.

To maximize the pranic fitness you extract from this technique, I want you to try the 1:2 inhalation/exhalation ratio I have described in the article.  So for every count of inhalation, extend the exhalation to double the length.  So for 4 counts of inhalation, make the exhalation phase 8 counts.  This elongated exhalation will expand your nervous system even more rapidly.

Here is the link to the entire article on Anuloma Viloma Pranayama: Chakra Balancing Breathing Exercise.

Also, here is a video demonstrating this wonderful breathing technique:

So for this month, let’s work together to get our internal systems fit and strong.  Having a strong nervous system, means you can function with greater energy, vitality and composure.

Powerful Yoga for Bulding Self Confidence | June Exercises

Courage and Self Esteem

Self Belief and Fearlessness

Self Confidence is a key, not just for success in manifestation, but also a key for making genuine spiritual progress.  We all know the important part confidence plays in ordinary life, allowing you to make great strides in your personal development, career, relationships, etc, but in the spiritual realm self confidence is equally important.  In the spiritual realm you have to have confidence in your ability to work your way through the illusion of duality and the ensuing suffering, and the self belief that you will be able to find your way out of the chaos.  At the end of day, as I have often said, enlightenment is a path walked alone.

So how can we build our self confidence?  What can we do to develop our courage and self belief so we can be fearless in our approach to life?  There are many methods and techniques for building this kind of confidence, and in this article I will give you some yoga and meditation approaches to achieve this goal.

These techniques for building self confidence will be the yoga poses for the month of June and will be part of our yoga practice for the month series.  For those who are new to the blog, each month we practice together a particular yoga exercise, pranayama technique and meditation, in order to enhance our skills and learn from each other.  We share our experiences in the comments section below as well.  So join us this month and experience the burst in confidence that this month’s techniques will produce.

Yoga Exercise for Building Self Confidence:

One of the most popular poses from Kundalini Yoga is Archer Pose and this is the favorite for those warrior yogis looking to boost their course and confidence.  This pose is not suggested for ego maniacs as it is just gonna make their heads swell even more , but if you are looking to give your inner strength a boost, there is no better technique than Archer’s Pose.

Remember that the biggest aspect of confidence, course and fear is psychological, so as you do this pose and breathe fiercely, engage your mind in helping you grow your self belief and power.  With every breath feel yourself expanding and growing more powerful, more focused, more strong and more resolute.  Done regularly it will help break the patterns of negative thinking and self doubt.  Practice this pose like you are a Warrior Saint.

Here is the link for Archer Pose for Building Confidence and Self Esteem.

Archer Pose for Power and Confidence

Bhastrika Pranayama for Energy and Vitality:

Another aspect of self confidence is having a healthy body and having lots of energy.  Feeling energetic and healthy will give you a psychological boost and this will translate to you having more confidence.  This particular yoga breathing exercise is excellent for helping you build a more energetic body.  In addition, Bhastika Pranayama can boost your metabolism, help you detox, increase your lung capacity and also help you burn fat.  All of these blessings, especially looking and feeling better, also contribute to having more confidence and power.

Here is the link to this wonderful exercise: Bhastrika Pranayama to Burn Fat and More

Smiling Buddha Meditation for Happiness and Confidence:

Along with looking good and feeling healthy, feeling happy also helps boost confidence, and one of the best meditations for doing this is the meditation supposedly prescribed to the Buddha to cheer him up, the Smiling Buddha Meditation for Happiness and Confidence.  Remember to do this meditation with a smile and not allow negative thinking to bring you down.

So for this month, if you need to build your self confidence, go ahead and try the three techniques above.  Remember though that it is not about having a big ego, but it is about having faith in yourself that you can achieve here in life all that which you were meant to do.

Interpreting Spiritual Dreams and Enlightenment Experiences

Understanding Spiritual Dreams

Enlightenment Experiences in Dreams Explained

Dreams are dreams and Spiritual Enlightenment Experiences which often take place in the silence of the night, sometimes co-mingle with dreams, but are certainly real.  As the website has grown one of the great benefits for me personally is the fascinating stories and experiences I get to read from spiritual aspirants globally.  These personal tales of transcendent experiences validate much of what is found in the spiritual texts, but more than anything else they inspire me to further deepen and expand my own practice.  I often share these testimonials with you and will do so again in the next few days, but today I want to explore the phenomenon of spiritual experiences that take place deep in the night and which often intermingle with our dreams.

Enlightenment Experiences

To understand what I mean by enlightenment experiences you can read, Understanding Hinduism, Buddhism and Non-Duality.

I have pointed out previously that napping or the phase between wakefulness and sleep is a very conducive time for enlightenment experiences (3 Simple Tips to Invite Enlightenment), but it is also true that sleep in general is a time when many enlightenment experiences occur.  I would say that even for you now this is true, even if you don’t have such experiences during meditation or wakeful hours.  It’s just that you don’t recall or remember these experiences in the morning.  Add a bit of awareness and you will be quite amazed at all that is going on within you at night.

Many enlightened masters actually point to experiences that took place at night while they were asleep to be the major catalysts for their awakening, J. Krishnamurti included.  Other masters have pointed out that a lot of the spiritual work gets done during these nighttime hours, when the conscious mind sleeps.  I have myself found that the majority of enlightenment experiences take place either when one is very relaxed, during meditation or during sleep.  The skeptical will say, oh it was just a dream, but let me tell you, these are not dreams.  Far from it, they are the most real experiences one has and in this article I want to explain that sometimes these experiences mix with dreams and that can lead to mis-interpretations.

My Dream Encounter and My Spiritual Self:

As an example I will use a late night enlightenment experience which mixed with a dream experience I had a few days ago.  I am a big fan of Ayurveda and one of the Ayurvedic Doctor’s whose teachings I admire is Dr. Vasant Lad (The Ayurvedic Institute).  For some time I have wanted to visit his clinic but have not had a chance to do so.  In any case a few nights ago I had a dream where I met Dr. Lad.

In the dream, he eschewed normal greeting protocols and instead looking me in the eye, placed his hands on my shoulders.  Soon I noticed that he was applying downward pressure to my shoulders and I figured he was checking the state of health by measuring my physical strength by this technique.  He had a bright, mischievous smile on and continued to press down and I started to feel my knees buckling.

I tried to stand but realized that the pressure was too great and it was impossible to control my body and stay standing.  The effort continued for a few minutes and finally I completely surrendered.  Here the experience actually is an “out of body” or experience of the spiritual self taking place.

Suddenly upon total release, when I let go of the physical body, I realized I was extremely light, light as a feather and a great divine presence was evident.  This was the spiritual aspect of oneself and now it was being experienced, as the body had been forsaken.  Mystic master Osho has often pointed to experiencing oneself as weightless and that is what was happening now.  This spiritual aspect was enormously blissful, free, weightless and expansive.  Utterly in awe I bowed in complete devotion to it and attempted to bow to Dr. Lad as well.  The experience and dream ended shortly afterwords.

I understand one of Dr. Lad’s Gurus, Vimalananda (Biography: Aghora – At The Left Hand of God), was reputed to have many psychic powers and abilities, including that of visiting others in their dream.  Now I am not sure if Dr. Lad has embraced these powers , but I would say the aspects of this experience involving Dr. Lad are indeed a dream, but the experience of bliss and the spiritual self, were indeed very real.

Of course, having experienced this dimension many times previously when awake (The Miracle of Self Awareness – I AM All, The Time My Body Disappeared – Osho Retreat) means I know it was not imagined, but I assure you if you were to have such an experience and remember it, you too will know that it is not a dream at all.

Interpreting Spiritual Experiences During Dreams:

So there are a few lessons to learn from such experiences, weather they take place in conjunction with dreams or during wakeful hours.

1. Sleep is an Opportunity:

Sleep time is a golden opportunity to develop your awareness and discover deeper and higher aspects of your being.  The key to this is maintaining awareness during sleep.  By doing so you will develop the wonderful skill of Lucid dreaming, but more importantly you will get a chance to experience hidden spiritual aspects of yourself, which are usually covered by the thinking mind during waking hours.

2. Night Time Enlightenment Experience and Dream Interpretation:

Often the enlightenment experiences you have at night will intermingle with your dreams and this can lead to wrong interpretations and misunderstandings.  Be aware that certain components of your experience might actually be a dream component, which has interlaced with a transcendent experience that is blossoming.  Of course, it is also well know that dreams can “mix” with real life experiences and this is just such a case where the dream is mixing with an enlightenment experience.

3. You are Not the Body, You are Blissful, Free and Divine:

You are not the body, you are spirit.  Such experiences allow you to first hand see the Truth of things for yourself.  So you do not have to simply believe spiritual texts or the teachings of Masters.  Such experiences then further inspire you to continue to work towards constant God Realization which is the same as Self Realization.  This is the highest purpose of human birth.  Do not waste this opportunity.

God Bless You All.

5 Unusual Ways to Get More Energy

How to Get More Energy

Increase Body Energy

Finally, everything comes down to energy, and you will find it necessary to increase the level of your body energy not just for living well, but also for success in real meditation.  The question which then follows, is what can you do in order to increase your energy levels and build them up to your maximum human capacity?  That will be the topic for this article.  Here I will discuss 5 non conventional ways to help your body have more energy, so that you can live and meditate at a higher and deeper level.

The conventional and effective methods for increasing energy are of course proper diet and exercise.  There is already a great deal of information about these 2 topics on the website.  You can read articles such as Healthy Eating Guide, Detox Diet Mistakes and Ayurvedic Diet to Lose Weight for nutritional tips, while the free online e-books on Hatha Yoga Poses and Kundalini Yoga Exercises will give you plenty of exercise and fitness tips.  But, beyond diet and exercise, there are many other ways to conserve and increase body energy and below I am going to discuss 5 of the more unusual ways to do this.

 More Energy

5 Ways to Get More Body Energy

1. Silence to Conserve Energy:

Quiet down .  Ours is a business of inner silence, but let’s at least learn to be outwardly quiet at times.  Talking endlessly, whether that be gossiping, complaining, babbling, discussing, arguing or endlessly talking about ourselves is a waste of precious energy.  So at least try taking a break from talking and spend a day being quiet to see what affects this has on you.  You will learn a great deal about yourself by undertaking such an experiment, not to mention the great amount of energy you will be able to save.

Silence is a well known technique used by masters throughout history to advance spiritually and energetically.  Some masters decided on life long silence, and although that is not required, life long yakking is not helpful either.  So, set aside some time to test this out for yourself and abstain observe complete silence.  It will give you a chance to hear your constant inner dialogue, which is the beginning of spiritual living.

2. Sexual Abstinence to Build Energy:

It is the wise man who preserves his sexual charge.  Treat life as a great big experiment, a laboratory for the study of the Self (read The Magical Gate to the Best School for Enlightenment) and don’t be afraid to try different things, even if they are unconventional.  This experiment of conserving your sexual charge and sexual energy is one you will find very interesting.  Sexual energy is not just the most condensed form of body energy, it is also the form of energy which can be used for both, spiritual growth as well as physical evolution.  So conserve this energy for a period of time and see it go to work for you.

If you are undergoing massive kundalini awakening, then you know to be careful of this approach, as it can push you too far, but otherwise it is a must try energy experiment for others.  In addition to the energy boost you will get, also keep an eye on your creativity levels during this time, you may notice some very surprising results there as well.

For those looking to build their sexual energy, you can check out the Free Online Tantra Yoga Program as well.

3. Stop Worrying:

This should have been number 1, now that I think about it, but here is the greatest cause for energy loss on the planet today – WORRYING.  Not only is it burning up precious energy, it is also creating mental stress, emotional stress, physical stress and wearing out the brain.  So what is the answer to breaking this deep rooted habit?  Learning to live moment to moment.  Forget about the future, just put yourself as best as you can in the hands of infinity and learn to go with the flow.  Let life take you where she wills.  Trying for endless security and worrying constantly about the past and future, disconnects you with the present, which is where life is, and which is where all the magic happens.  So for the sake of your happiness and for an end to energy wastage, it is time to give up worrying completely, right now.

4. Passionate Living to Summon Energy:

If you want to live an inspired and energetic life, do what you are passionate about.  I have written about this key topic in the ever popular article, The Secret of How to Become an Early Riser, but will summarize the essence of it for you here.  Energy is provided where it is needed or demanded by life.  When you are really interested in doing something, you will notice that the energy will show up, in this way, when you are doing things you are passionate about, you will find yourself having abundant energy and motivation.  A sure fire way to feel lethargic and depressed is to undertake jobs and careers you have no love or passion for.  If you really want to be full of energy and zeal, do that which love to do.

5. Pranayama for Incredible Body Energy:

Finally, there is yoga breathing exercises, the King Kong of all body energy increasing methods.  This is perhaps not that unusual any more, as it is getting more and more mainstream attention, but it is still not as widely accepted or known as simple hatha yoga (physical yoga).  Pranayama is one of the best ways to open up energetic pathways, clear your system of emotional and physical debris, rejuvenate your organs, raise your level of consciousness, find peace and tap into the infinite reservoir of life energy or prana which is available to you for free.  For those who are new to pranayama here is a free online ebook with all the details you need in order to get started with this life transforming practice – Yoga Breathing Exercise – Pranayama.

Summary of How to Get More Body Energy:

The five methods above to conserve and increase your energy, in conjunction with a healthy diet and fitness routine, will give you the opportunity to live a magnificent and fruitful life.  One final note about energy tip #4, is that it is this very passion for advanced meditation (watching your thoughts), which leads the mind to slow down and allow for moment to moment comprehension of thinking mind.  So, as I mentioned in the beginning, everything is a game of energy, living life and transcending it as well.

Comprehensive Guide on How to Teach a Yoga Class

Teaching Yoga & Kundalini Yoga Class

Yoga Teacher’s Guide

(Please note this is now a combined document for easy reference, and part 3 has been appended below parts 1 & 2).

(If you are interested in becoming a yoga instructor you can check out my popular and affordable Online Yoga Teacher Certification Course).

(Part 1)

My good friend and author of the great Yoga Blog PranaFlowNZ, Kara-Leah Grant, dropped me a note the other day with a suggestion that I give some pointers on how to teach the yoga techniques and meditations that I publish here on Mastery of Meditation & Yoga.  I thought this was a great idea, and so would like to kick off this new topic with a discussion of how to teach a great yoga class in general first.  Also, going forward I will include teaching tips for the exercises and meditations as well that make up the free yoga & meditation e-books and videos.

I obviously love to teach, which is luckily also the Universe’s plan for me and is what I was born to do according to my numerological reading, and if through this website I can help others to become great yoga and meditation teachers as well, it would just be icing on the cake

Comprehensive Guide

For those who have not taken a live Kundalini Yoga class, I strongly suggest you to try one.  It is quite a blast.  Here is an article with my thoughts regarding the Benefits of Group Yoga Practice.

What I will present below is the sequence and details that I have found to work best in teaching a yoga class.  The instructions are specifically for a Kundalini Yoga class, but they certainly apply to any other type of yoga class as well.

Typically a single class can be broken down into 3 phases.  I will call them, Orientation, Warm-up and finally The Work.  Below is how these come together to form a great class and a great, transforming experience for the students.  In this article I will cover the Orientation phase, and in the next part will cover the other 2 phases.

One final note before I jump ahead, is that this is also a great sequence for you to follow for your own personal yoga practice.

Teaching a Yoga Class Phase 1 – Orientation:

Objectives:

  1. Get the students settled in.
  2. Ensure the spacing is correct for safety and comfort.
  3. Get their mind and awareness into the here and now.
  4. Introduce/Accomplish some silent meditation.
  5. Give a short overview of the yoga style, class structure and planned yoga set.
  6. Give important practice instructions to the newbies.

Yup, in every class I try to cover the above, unless there are no new students there.  If all the students are veteran yogis, then you can skip items 5 & 6.  To tell you the truth, such classes are sometimes more fun for the teacher, because it means the intensity can be turned up a notch and more challenging techniques can be practiced.  Here now are details of each of the items above.

Items 1, 2, 3 & 4 Above:

As the students file into the class, I make sure the early ones move up and near to where I sit, as for some reason students always tend to keep more of a distance from the teacher than they need to.  I don’t like to feel lonely sitting all by my lonesome at the head of the class .  This is of course so that the late comes, and there always are some and you know who are , can join in towards the back.

I am also making sure during this time that spacing is good between students, which generally means that they should be able to spread both arms out to their sides without hitting anyone.  In addition, I am usually pointing out cushions, mats, water, etc to newcomers as well.  Shortly I announce the start of the class, and immediately get everyone to start long deep breathing.

After few long deep breaths, I give instructions to start breath awareness meditation (posture, technique, etc).  I find the long deep breathing initially gets everyone to relax and awaken, and the breath awareness meditation (essentially Zazen – Zen Meditation Technique) gets everyone’s mind into the present, where all the work is going to get done.  I will vary the demands of this meditation from time to time, depending on the expertise of the students present.

During this time of Zazen, the last few students generally arrive and I move onto items 5 & 6 next.

Item 5:

Now I give a short overview of Kundalini Yoga, what it entails and how it works.  This is for the new comers, thus the veteran yogis can just tune me out and continue to work on their meditation.  Specifically here I mention the mechanisms Kundalini Yoga uses to work it’s magic and also, some details of how this all helps to rejuvenate and heal the body/mind complex.  You can get details on this information in the Introduction to Kundalini Yoga article.

In addition, I let the students know what the class structure is going to be exactly.  I find this helps put them to ease and helps them know how the class is going to flow.  I also here let them know which particular aspect of their being we are going to focus on today (the theme of the Yoga Set), as I always find sharing this information to be very motivating and encouraging to them.  My class structure is generally the following…

  • Meditation and orientation period.
  • Tuning in to their Higher Self and the Universal Energy.
  • Breathing exercises (pranayamas) to get their energy going.
  • Warm-ups.
  • Main Yoga Set.
  • Relaxation.

Item 6:

This part is perhaps the most important aspect of the orientation and here I now give the key guidelines I want the students to follow.  Essentially the following points are covered here.

  • I tell them, I will demonstrate first the pose or exercise, which after observing they do with their eyes closed.
  • All breathing is done through the nose, unless otherwise instructed.
  • Use the modifications for tough exercises.
  • To not overdo, be careful with injuries and work around them whenever possible.
  • To not compete and not worry about how anyone else is doing.
  • Throughout the class to do the practice will full awareness.

Here are 2 articles that cover these and other important yoga guidelines:  10 Important Guidelines for Kundalini Yoga Practice & Essential Beginner’s Guide to Yoga Practice.

In the next part of this series I will cover the Warm-up and Work phase of teaching a fantastic yoga class.

(Part 2)

Warming up for a Yoga Class (Part 2)

Yoga Tips for Teachers

In part 1 of the series, How to Teach a Fantastic Yoga Class, I explained that there are typically three sections to a Yoga Class.  These I called, Orientation, Warm-up and the Work.  In part 1 I also went over the orientation section and discussed what items one should cover in that section.  In part 2 here I will cover the Warm-up phase, which when well put together, goes a long way in helping make the class a terrific experience for the students.

Phase 2: Warm-up

Don’t ever underestimate the importance of the warm-up phase.  Also, don’t underestimate the benefits it bestows.  A well planned warm-up, will not just help the students get the most out of the set you are planning to teach, but in and of itself will cover many areas that should be worked on a daily basis.  These two points are what I take into account whenever I am designing the warm-up phase.  In addition, you should also start a class by helping the students tune in to their Higher Self and the Universal Mind, to get protection, guidance and inspiration.

Here are the objectives you should shoot for with the warm-up section:

Objectives:

1. Tune in to your Higher Self / Universal Mind.

2. Get the students energy going.

3. Cover the must do everyday yoga stretches and exercises if possible.

4. Prepare the student’s body for the final yoga set, so they can get maximum benefit from it.

1: Tuning In

Always start a class with tuning in.  Yoga is not just a physical science.  It is a spiritual science and without spirit, you may as well be doing aerobics or something.  In yoga, whether you have been explained it or not, you are dealing with cosmic energies, you are dealing with Kundalini & Prana.  Such energies should be approached with respect, and the purpose of tuning in is ask your Higher Self and the Universe for Protection, Guidance and Inspiration.  This ensures the energies do not harm you, you are guided correctly and you are provided ample inspiration to see the journey all the way back to the Source.

This tuning in you should also do prior to doing your personal yoga practice as well.  There are many ways to tune in and accomplish the above.  Silent prayer, AUM mantra chanting or the beautiful Ong Namo Guru Dev Namo mantra that we use in Kundalini Yoga.  You can see an actual demonstration of this tuning in in the following video article:  AUM Mantra Video for Starting Yoga Class.

Also, for teachers who teach classes in club and gym settings.  I have myself taught in such environments and have had no problems in including this tuning in phase in those classes as well.  So don’t shy away from it simply because you think the students will be turned off.  Do it with confidence, and they will embrace this aspect of the class wholeheartedly.

2: Energize the Students:

After the meditation period and tuning in phase the students are calm, peaceful and relaxed… really they are tooooo calm, peaceful and relaxed , so it’s time to fire up their systems to get their energy flowing and get them going.  So hit them with some powerful vitalizing pranayamas here.  Here are some suggestions.

4 Part Deep Breathing

Kaplbhati Pranayama

Breath of Fire

Bhastrika Pranayama

3-4. Daily Essentials & Essential Warm-ups:

Here I make sure I cover as much of the daily essential work as recommended by yoga as I can.  I almost always make sure we do Butterfly Pose, which is great to start off with and we also do Forward Bend, to stretch the all important life nerve.  One tip is to do these 2 poses before the breathing exercises so that the students, who have by then been sitting with legs crossed for some time, get a chance to stretch their legs.  In addition, you can do these 2 exercises with Breath of Fire (or Long Deep Breathing) so you accomplish the task of firing up their energy as well.

Next in the warm-up section I will do the all important Spinal Warm-up Series.  This is not just great for getting their back, hips, neck, shoulders, etc warmed up, but this set heats up the cerebro-spinal fluid which runs through the spinal cord.  This is key, as it maximizes the benefit of the yoga set you plan to do later, as through the spinal cord run the main energetic channels which carry kundalini and prana up and down the primary energy centers (chakras).  For some more details of how this works you can read the article Introduction to Kundalini Yoga.

One addition note, is that if your yoga set is not going to do any abdominal work, then include some navel, third chakra work in this section as well.  This is also an area which one must work on each day.  Here are 2 sets from which you can get some good abdominal exercises to use.

Core Abdominal Power Yoga Exercises

Terrific Ab Yoga Workout to Shape Stomach

In the final part of the series I will go over the Work phase of teaching a yoga class.  If you are a yoga teacher and would like to share any of your warm-up tips, please feel free to do so in the comments section below.

(Part 3)

How to Teach a Yoga Class (Part 3)

Tips for Yoga Teachers

If you have followed the steps laid out above in parts 1 and 2, your class should be going really great already.  The students should feel very comfortable, be well warmed up and should get the sense that they are in the hands of an experienced Yoga Master.  Now it is time to do the more intense yoga exercises which makes up the core of the class.  This is the section which I call The Work.  This is phase 3 of your yoga class.

Phase 3 – The Work:

In this phase of the class you are going to do the set which you indicated to them in the Orientation phase.  It is the set which you are building up to and it should be a set which has a particular theme or purpose.  In Kundalini Yoga such sets are called Kriyas, and there are Kriyas designed for a very wide range of purposes.  From working on a particular body system, such as the digestive system, to working on a particular trait, such as confidence, to dealing with certain conditions, such as insomnia, to working on a particular body of light, such as the Aura, etc, etc, etc.  You will find some excellent kriyas in the Free Online Kundalini Yoga Kriyas E-book, but there are many more you should be familiar with already if you are a Kundalini Yoga teacher.

Objectives for Phase 3 of Your Class:

1. Give all students an appropriate workout

2. Ensure they are safe

3. Have period of relaxation

4. Ending prayers

5. Question & answer period

1-2. Give the Students a Safe Workout:

Kriyas come in all level of difficulties, but generally your class will have students with mixed levels of capability, so it is really important to have modifications for the difficult exercises in mind.  This ensures that all students will be able to participate in the poses and exercises for that particular set, and that all students will get a workout relative to their level of expertise and capacity.

Also, during the set the following statements I find to be helpful:

  • Don’t forget to remind them to not overdo it
  • For motivation, remind them that the chance to do yoga and such spiritual practice is a rare opportunity.
  • For motivation, remind them of the value of each exercise and how it is helping their body and systems.
  • For motivation, tell them not to give in to their constantly complaining mind.
  • For motivation, tell them to go a little further than they have gone before.

3. Relaxation Period:

After their set (which should be the end of the physical aspect of you class), a relaxation period is a must.  Have them do Corpse Pose for Relaxation now, and see the details for how to instruct them for that in that article.  This relaxation period is a must to maximize the benefits of all the hard work your students have done, so plan your time accordingly.

4. Ending Prayers:

At the very end of class, after the students have risen from their relaxation period, it is an ideal time for a few important prayers.  Here are the 3 prayers I do at the end of every class.

To pray with power and focus, so the thoughts manifest in reality, have them inhale deeply hold their breath and then prayer/visualize.  So before each of these prayers below, have them inhale, hold their breath, focus their mind and then do the prayer.  Then exhale and move on to the next prayer.

  • Visualize you and your life exactly as you want it to be.
  • Send out a healing prayer to someone who you know needs it.
  • Pray for peace and love on Mother Earth, and peace and love in everyone’s heart.

5. Question / Answer Time:

Since a Kundalini Yoga class has a certain rhythm and flow, I request the students to ask their questions at the end of class.  As long as you are very clear in your instructions, have followed the guidelines laid out above and do good demonstrations before the poses and exercises, this works very well.  So at the end of class, relax, sit back and allow the students who want to ask questions to do so, other students can stay for this period, or leave if they want to.

So there you have a very detailed and comprehensive guide on how to teach a yoga class.  Hope all you teacher out there, who are doing this noble profession, find it useful and hope it helps make your yoga class a fantastic and transforming experience for your students.

Section 2: Warm-up

Don’t ever underestimate the importance of the warm-up phase.  Also, don’t underestimate the benefits it bestows.  A well planned warm-up, will not just help the students get the most out of the set you are planning to teach, but in and of itself will cover many areas that should be worked on a daily basis.  These two points are what I take into account whenever I am designing the warm-up phase.  In addition, you should also start a class by helping the students tune in to their Higher Self and the Universal Mind, to get protection, guidance and inspiration.
