Kundalini Energy During Meditation

Power of Kundalini Energy

There are many Kundaini Yoga Meditations and you will find a number of them in the following free e-book here on Mastery of Meditation and Yoga (Free Online Guided Meditation Techniques), but what I would like to discuss today is not Kundalini Yoga Meditations, but the flow and power of Kundalini energy during advanced meditation.  Finally, meditation is the act of comprehending, at a glace, the entire story of every thought from moment to moment.  I have explained this highest and purest form of meditation in some detail in the article Silent Mind Meditation Technique, and have discussed the insights that explode due to this quality of meditation in the ongoing series, Insights from Advanced Meditation Practice, and today I would like to give some actual kundalini experiences that take place when practicing such meditation.

Power of the Energy

Please note, these are not general Kundalini experiences that are taking place as a part of your spiritual evolution, which you can read about in the ever popular article Kundalini Awakening Symptoms, but are the real time kundalini energy events that tend to occur during a single meditation session of the highest quality.  In my view, until one applies oneself in full capacity to the silent, spontaneous comprehension of the moving mind, one has not yet explored their full human potential.  No matter what your preferred technique or spiritual practice is, I would recommend a serious attempt at this method of observation, as it the most direct path to the cessation of the thinking mind.

Prerequisites to Advanced Meditation

The entire Silent Mind Meditation Program is really designed to help you explore this capacity, but briefly here are generally what the requirements are to practice such meditation.

  • You should be able to sit still for 1 hour.  Minor adjustment or two during this hour is ok.
  • You should have the ability to focus your mind on an object (such as the breath) for long periods of time.  A full hour of such concentration is not necessary, but you should be in that ballpark.
  • You should have a sound and clear intellectual understanding of the fundamentals of the thinking mind.  Here I am referring to topics such as desire, psychological time, hope, effort, etc, not the neural, cognitive or “scientific” aspects.
  • You should have a unending great passion for Self-realization and enlightenment.
  • You should have a sense of urgency, equal to that of a person stuck in a burning house.

Now we can begin .  I, of course, don’t want to end up discouraging you, but I do want you to understand that tinkering about or dabbling in such meditation is simply not going to get it done.  So before you give it a weak attempt or two and call it quits, I want you to realize that although this meditation is not complex, after all the only requirement is to carefully watch your thoughts, it does take some serious work to do.  So be prepared to give everything you have to it and then see what happens.

So when you finally get down to watching your thoughts, and comprehending them with direct observation from moment to moment, you will soon realize that this requires great energy.  At the heart of the required swift awareness and sharp intelligence is going to be energy.  Without this energy, thoughts will run into one another and pile up fast, leaving you unable to keep pace with their vicious velocity.  So to capture and digest each and every thought your mental engine (awareness and intelligence, not just logical systems) has to be running in tip-top shape and for that you will need energy.  This energy is Kundalini and the experience of this energy during meditation is what I am referring to as Kundalini Meditation here.

Kundalini Meditation Experiences

So as you sit and divert all your attention to your thoughts, your passion and urgency will give you the necessary intensity, and this intensity is Kundalini going to work.  A typical session of such meditation, tends to have 3 phases.  The first is just a silent watching of the breath to slow down the momentum and speed of the mind, the next is the phase of intense observation allowing for digestion of each thought to occur, and finally the explosion of insight and the ensuing shift into an enlightened state, whatever that might be.  In the second phase, where there is great power of observation, is where you will tend to experience kundalni flowing, and here are some ways in which she will manifest.

  • Energy rushing up the spine, straightening it spontaneously and sometimes almost pulling you right off the ground.
  • Tremendous vibration of the forehead and eyelids.
  • Great energy being drawn in from the soles of your feet and energy being generated by your legs and thighs.
  • Spontaneous application of Root Lock or Mula Bandh, where your rectum and/or sex organ will contract sharply and stay contracted.
  • Pressure at the base of the spine.
  • Pressure at the back of your neck.
  • One of the most common, is pressure in the center of the forehead and all around the head region.
  • Energy rushing into the brain.  Feels like ants, tingling, flushing feelings.
  • Contraction of the front chest and back regions to generate greater amounts of energy to divert to the observation.
  • Shaking and trembling of the entire body.
  • Lifting up of the head, as in looking upwards with great force.
  • Stiffness of the entire body
  • Energy and vibrations in the inner ears, one or both.

Once explosion takes place and you start to move towards Samadhi or the Enlightened state, from this state of Concentration and Continuous Unbroken Observation (Dharana  and Dhyana), then the whole complexion of Reality of course transforms.  But in the in between stage, where you go from just calming the mind down to the state where the shift of awareness has taken place, you are going to dance with Kundalini.  This is Kundalini Energy in Meditation.

Summary of Kundalini Energy and Meditation

Another article where I go into this advanced meditation technique some more, especially with regard to how it is related to Sage Patanjali’s teachings is Best Mind Meditation | Most Advanced Meditation Technique.  Of course, you will also experience a great deal of kundalini events and symptoms during kundalini yoga practice and you can read about others and my such experiences here, Kundalini Experiences Being Reported by Readers Like You and Explosive Kundalini Rising in Yoga Class Today.

The purpose of this article is to share with you some of what is experienced from the perspective of Kundalini energy, when one really gets down to the highest meditation.  If you have experienced such or other kundalini symptoms, specially during meditation, then please do share them with us in the comments section below.  For general kundalini awakening symptoms, the article I linked to in the very beginning, is a great place to share and discuss.

    Very interesting read,

In an attempt to find a logical explanation for all sorts of strange vibrations and visuals I arrived here. I just recently experienced all of those feelings before going to sleep however, i’ve never really studied or practiced meditation. (or maybe i have unknowingly?)
What I was doing while laying still in bed was focusing on areas of my brain, I could feel some sort of “pressure” building up. I tested to see if it was just my eyes or muscles on my head creating tension by keeping my eyes open and focused on one spot with face/head relaxed. To my astonishment, when I focused around the back/bottom center of my brain I began to feel a flurry of vibrations (kind of like being electrocuted) which spread throughout my entire body. When i closed my eyes, I could see what almost looked like static on a television but with larger “strings” if you will.

Whats also strange, is that I recall this happening to me at a very young age.. I’m only 20 now, but one of my childhood experiences was exactly this, however, I was terrified by the experience thinking I was being possessed or something. So then I vowed to never try that type of focus again until recently.

I took a non-western philosophy class in which we first focused on Buddhism. One of the main phrases i remember from our readings was ” the key to your true self is in the dream sequence.” Why this is interesting is because your “pineal glad” (which someone else mentioned) Is responsible for producing a chemical to induce dreaming. I have theory about the connection among meditation, the pineal gland, dmt, and “elightenment.” I wont elaborate on this as it might be inappropriate or offensive to post here.

I started practicing meditation around the end of summer time. I beleive i have experienced quite a few things, but i notice the most common thing that happens to me while i meditate is that my head lifts up. However, it continues to lift up slowly with each breath practically, and eventually it lifts high enough where my neck/back of neck start to feel uncomfortable and hurt even. I figure this is due to pressure from the head lifting up so slowly. My question is this supposed to happen, and will this discomfort pass?? I keep telling myself to try and push pass it but it get to a point where i cant take it. Maybe i am just being a wuss about it. Any thoughts? I have tried doing this with my back against the wall to help prevent my head lifting so far but then i realized that it sort of pushes my spine and upper torso forward while it tries to lift more. Could i be doing something wrong here? I am not sure.
    Thanks

I am new to your website. I had a very dear friend that passed away about a week ago. I felt a sadness that I have never experienced in my entire life. I know that I need to work on my heart chakra and root chakra especially at this time. I will take your advice and do the kundalini yoga exercises and meditations to help create some balance. Thank you for your work.

    Hi Anmol,

Thank you for providing the examples of kundalini energy flow. I have been seeking the answer to a “problem” for several months. I have asked my physician, my yoga instructor and a well known professor of psychology.

My experiences are not unlike some of the descriptions you listed. I’ve been meditating for many years. Several months back I had a burst of energy run up my spine and out my limbs which felt like a very powerful chill. Then my body instantly heats up and I get a flush/chill feeling covering my head, face, back, hands and feet. A feeling of being high and blissful continues in my head throughout my meditation and sometimes for a while after. Presently, all I have to do is close my eyes and focus on my pineal gland and I instantly get the same experience again. It has become a permanent part of my practice. I can make it happen anytime I choose. I can also control it now by mentally grabbing it with determined focus and placing it into the center of my brain around the pineal gland and create light with it.

Also, sometimes I get a blurred vision of people, animals, plants and trees all blending together as different shades of light.

I do not practice kundalini meditation but your description is very close to what I’m experiencing. Do you have any comments or concerns that I should be aware of.

    Thank you
    Mark

I have been doing the silent mind meditation for sometime before reading this site and i was even more intrigued about it here than where i previously found. you deliver information very clear and precisely and your motives feel truly genuine, which a lot of other sites lack. I have experienced Kundalini’s white light. I was leaning on my side staring at my laptop, then all of a sudden i had realized i wasn’t moving or thinking for some time. i took some breaths laid on my back with my eyes closed and heard that constant ringing. now i know that ringing is my inner sound, which i can turn on or off, and after focusing on it long enough other vibrations come in sync with the previous tone. Following the tone seems to a Sm meditation technique that works for me but also much more challenging once the single thoughts come. Back to the experience…i saw a speckle that looked like a distant star and upon focusing on it, it had immediately grew and took over my perception. my spine locked and i thought i had pulled or muscle somehow, but i was thinking it doesn’t really hurt i just can’t move. I felt enrgy travel up my spine to my head and then all once it seemed to burst from my spine in all directions and i was able to feel every cell in my body. I think it was my cells or just a new perception of my being from under my skins perspective. afterward, i was so relaxed and all was forgotten as i looked at it. Ex: It was like my English thought process was nonexistent and everything was just perceived. I have also touched things and heard vibrations???? any knowledge about that?

    Hi Anmol,

Great article on kundalini meditation. I did a 10 day vipassana course and we were meditating and focussing for 8 -10 hrs everyday.
During the last few days we had 3 1 hr sittings a day where you were to sit completely still without moving even a single part of the body. I adjusted my hand position but left the legs still, though it was tough in the beginning.

I have ant crawling/tingling vibrations on my head whenever I sit down to meditate or even if I just focus on my head. I have had spontaneous body movements (http://philomusings.blogspot.com/2008/05/rocking-motion-during-meditation.html) many a times. Also had adjustment of posture, lifting up of head and feel like I am going to fall backwards. That’s about it, no big energy flows in the body so far. I am open to any experience during meditation.

    Thank you, Anmol.

Fortunately, I started with mindfulness meditation, and as such all my Kundalini experiences have been rather mild… at least so far :-)

I have started rocking spontaneously, I have felt varying degrees of heat in my spine, my head, and my stomach, I have started spontaneously sweating… even in a cool room.

Dabbling in this is usually just wasteful, but I have heard stories of people who weren’t taking it seriously, and had some powerful energetic experiences go very wrong for them.

I always endeavor to have fun with meditation… but it is important to insert some caution into that fun when it comes to energy meditations… particularly Kundalini

    keep smiling,

    Ben

  1. […] In the article Kundalini Meditation | The Power of the Energy, I discussed how the awakening of Kundalini takes place in advanced meditation, as the demand for energy in order to watch reality in motion taps into this latent potential.   Kundalini awakening and subsequent enlightenment experiences also take place as energy channels open up during meditation and higher states of consciousness are experienced.
