Free Online Charka Balancing Yoga Pranayama Video
The article Chakra Balancing Yoga Breathing Exercise is the second pranayama in the Free Online Breathing Exercises (Yoga Pranayama) E-Book. That article gives a great deal of detail on this pranayama, so here I will just give a high level overview of it to introduce this video.
Chakra Balancing Yoga Pranayama is more commonly known as Anuloma Viloma Pranayama or Alternate Nostril Breathing. This is a fundamental yoga breathing technique, which is an important aspect of all the various schools of yoga. It’s origins are in the Yoga Sutras of Patanjali and it is a key part of Kundalini Yoga and Hatha Yoga practice.
The yoga instruction video below is quite detailed, but please also check the article referenced above for more information. Here are some quick highlights of what the video covers:
- Detailed instructions of the beginner, intermediate and advanced versions of Anuloma Viloma Pranayama.
- Discusses the general rules for doing yoga breathing exercises and gives guidelines for the practice of this pranayama.
- Gives an overview of the Kundalini Yoga Chakra system, the Nadis and how this particular pranayama helps to purify and balance this system.
I have decided to upload a Short Version of the pranayama video as well, as the full version is pretty long. The short version video is about 4 minutes, while the full version video is about 15 minutes. So if you want just a quick demonstration of Anuloma Viloma pranayama, watch the abridged video, if you want to hear all the goodies go for the big one.

Hi Sam,
Great to hear you are enjoying and benefiting from the website.
I have not included the breath retention simply because I was planning to do that in an advanced version of Anuloma Viloma that’s all. Anuloma Viloma is more powerful than people realize, so one should not do too much too fast that’s all.
So the recommendation is to do the beginner’s version w/o breath retention first and then later introduce it.
You will find these thoughts in the following article:
Anuloma Viloma Pranayama.

Anmol
Hi Anmol,
Thanks for building this great yoga repository. I am still exploring the website so don’t know if my question is answered anywhere else.
Ok – so I have been doing yoga on and off, primarily hatha yoga. I notice that you do not recommend holding the breath, is that just a Kundalini yoga variation? I usually try to do 4:4:16:2 ratio, ie., inhale:hold:exhale:hold, and so on. I was wondering if that variation will have the same benefits as you have described in the beginning of this video? Essentially, I am looking for basic movements to balance my Chakra system, since I do not have the awareness to realize which chakra is out of balance and which I should focus more on. Your recommendations will be valuable. :).
Thanks

Try Jal Neti. That would be my first recommendation. If you have not tried it yet, don’t worry it is not too bad :-), I do it myself quite often.
Glad you are enjoying the videos.

Hi Ricardo,
Yes, sometime the “a” is to be pronounced, but mostly it is not. Actually, in the words yog”a” and pranayam”a” it is not to be pronounced (not in Anuloma Viloma either)… so you can imagine what my orthodox yog friends say about the pronunciation of yog”a” in the West :-).
I am much less concerned with the pronunciation though, and far more concerned with the practice :-).
In any case, for your heat issue there is a better pranayama than Anuloma Viloma, it is Sheetali Pranayama, and you will find the details in the below article.
Sheetali Pranayama.
Also, please follow an Ayurvedic Pitta pacifying diet (limit all foods that produce excessive heat). Following article has some more info on that…

Let me know how your progress goes.

Hi Anmol! I’m very thankful for your video demonstration of Anuloma Viloma Pranayama. By the way, “pranayama” is a sanskrit word, and I have heard yoga teachers do pronounce the last “a” of the word, same for Anuloma Viloma. Well, this is just a little detail.
Besides, I would like to know if this pranayama can help for overheating issues. During winter I experience sudden kundalini awakenings when I am under Sun exposure, and when this happens I feel tremendous energy raising through my spine. I also feel this if I get very emotive or emotional, for example when I get angry, or if I laugh a lot, haha. I read in a book this might be a sign of unbalance, because energy might be flowing mostly through Pingala.
Can Anuloma Viloma help?
PHP Encoder,
Thanks for your positive feedback…
Best,
Anmol
