Kundalini Awakening Symptoms

Symptoms of Kundalini Awakening

Real Life Experiences & Descriptions of Kundalini Rising

Are you going through a kundalini awakening episode or experience?  Let’s find out…

Kundalini awakening symptoms are truly a very intriguing subject.  Really there is no correct answer to the question, “What are the symptoms of Kundalini Rising?”, as thankfully, each of us is absolutely unique and thus, on a unique trajectory on the path to Kundalini Awakening.  That said, there are some common kundalini experiences that are often reported, which I would like to share with you in this article.

Although we can draw up endless lists of symptoms from third party accounts, I would like to instead make this series about kundalini symptoms that you or I have actually experienced.  In this article, I will give a recent account from one of my students about what she experienced shortly after class, and then I will add my own kundalini experiences and observations as well.

In the comments section, I encourage you to add any kundalini awakening experiences or symptoms you have felt, so others can better understand what they might be going through.  Here is the recent email I received from my student, Aida:

Aida’s Experience of Kundalini Awakening:

I am a student of the “Gentle Kundalini Class”. I just finished taking a series of exercise specifically for the spine.

As I left the class I felt energized as I usually feel after each class, but this time it was a little different, I was feeling extra aware of my surrounding. Like a light turned on. My back was so straight. It lasted all day.

If I could go to class every morning I would go. It makes my day start right in every way. And there are times when I am not feeling like going to class and I push myself to go and do not regret it.

Thank you for being my teacher.
Aida D.

For those interested, here is a link to the Spinal Warmup Kundalini Yoga Kriya we did in class that day.  Thank you Aida, for sharing your personal experiences with us.

This particular experience of kundalini is very interesting and significant.  This is because it is the common experience of advanced meditation and of kundalini yoga.  In the article, Powerful Kundalini Yoga Battles Profound Zen Meditation, I described my own such experience with kundalini awakening, but not from doing kundalini yoga, but instead from doing Silent Mind Meditation!

Aida’s experience points at the two things that all yoga and meditation boils down to.  Energy and Awareness.

My favorite description of Kundalini Yoga is, “The Yoga of Awareness,” and as you see from her account, she felt more aware, as the energy of kundalini had risen up her spine.  In meditation, it is the same.  The demand for intense awareness, in order to comprehend the thought process via direct perception, leads to energy (kundalini) rising up and elongating the spine.  Awareness then follows.

Jiddu Krishnamurti describes this experience of kundlaini energy flowing up the spine as “The rush of water filling up and thus causing a pipe to stand erect.”

When we insist that the spine be straight during meditation, it is simply to facilitate this awakening and thus, to assist in being more aware.  I have experienced kundalini rising and puling up with such force, during meditation, that it sometimes make me feel as if I am going to be launched right off the ground or as if it’s going to pull my head off and up into the sky.

Kundalini Awakening in Meditation

Symptoms of Kundalini Awakening:

I am going to describe some of the physical symptoms my students or I have felt due to kundalini awakening.  I know there are many emotional and mental symptoms as well, and you are welcome to share those with us in the comments section below.  I am grouping the experiences into 3 categories, common, uncommon and rare, according to what I have observed.

Common Kundalini Awakening Symptoms:

  • Tingling in the body and brain region.  Also sometimes described as ants walking, tickling energy or flushes of energy.  The brain being flushed with energy is quite pleasant :-).
  • Heat or cold in the system, or running along various channels and chakra centers.
  • Fluttering or twitching of muscles.
  • Pinching or burning in various regions of the body or brain.

Uncommon Kundalini Awakening Symptoms:

  • Pressure in the Third Eye Region (Ajna Chakra).  This is pressure, tingling or other sensation in the center of the forehead.  Can go on for years (14 years and counting so far for me).  Caution: If the pressure, due to certain practices, intensifies to uncomfortable levels you feel are “immense”, you should cease that practice and consult a competent kundalini yoga teacher.
  • Sudden bursts of energy anywhere in the body.  These are almost always short lived, from a few seconds to a few minutes.
  • Spontaneous yoga asans or kundalini yoga movements.  They may come on spontaneously, or they may take over, as if on auto-pilot when one is practicing  Kundalini Yoga Kriyas or Exercises (For an example see article: Explosive Kundalini Rising in Class Today).
  • Kundalini Shakti rising up and elongating the spine.
  • Incredible feeling of love and desire for your partner (not ordinary lust, alcohol induced or otherwise :-).  Usually comes upon you spontaneously, deep in the night.  Sex feels like it’s the first such experience and the intense feelings of attraction emanate from somewhere beyond yourself.
  • Unfortunately, pain in the lower back, back of the neck and headaches.

Rare Kundalini Awakening Symptoms:

  • Experience of divine light within.  Very intense light, usually pure white and incredibly beautiful.  I call it the Radiation of the Lord.
  • Tremendous vibratory energy (sometimes feels like it’s coming from the inner ears).  Very blissful, but can intensify to the point where it would completely overwhelm your consciousness if you let it.
  • Spontaneous bliss, intensely pleasurable.
  • This one is a bit scary.  Complete paralysis of the body.  Complete immobility and rigidity takes place.  As with the all consuming vibratory energy, it requires some courage to allow.
  • This one is exceedingly rare.  I have experienced it only once in my life, and have only ever read about it being experienced by one other – the master of awareness, G. I. Gurdjieff.  The arms and legs churn like that of a baby.  It happens naturally and cannot be simulated.  It is also intensely pleasurable and quite a remarkable experience.

There are of course a wide range of transcendental experiences, some of which you will find described in the category Spiritual Enlightenment Experiences.  Above, I have provide those that are more commonly associated with kundalini awakening, although many would argue, including Swami Vivekananda, that all enlightenment experiences have to do with kundalini entering the brain region in some capacity.

So if you have experienced some kundalini symptoms as well, please do share them with us below.  I think it will benefit others identify if what they are going through is actually symptoms of the ever mysterious kundalini awakening.

I just had one on Sunday. Layed down for be and relaxed flat on my back. All of a sudden it felt like I was so heavy I couldn’t move. Like someone was holding me down. I was awake but eyes closed. Then all of a sudden my body started doing weird things. Muscles tight for a bit then all of a sudden a release and fall into the bed and a deep breath. Then about 15 seconds later again. This went on for about 4 hrs. Stretching me and co rotting me every which way but loose. My hands were stuck in a montra which I’ve never done. I looked up at one point and my wrists were 3” above the bed. I felt like an emended pressure on my crown chackra And a burst of energy pulling me up and also through all my other chackras. I never felt scared just let it happen. For some reason I knew I was fine. The next day when I meditated it did it again. Not as intensely tho. Craziest thing I’ve ever had happen to me before

I am confused as to when my awakening happened.
It all started with practising tarot readings and started going into mediumship (accidentally).
Doing readings was comforting by the most amazing experience had been mediumship. It felt like bliss when someone tried to come through when they were friendly souls and it was such an amazing feeling, but when it was low vibration energies, it felt pretty scary and weird.
One day, I was doing a tarot reading for a woman and I felt this attack of energy that was very unpleasant; it was scary and painful. I attributed that sensation to a psychic attack.
A psychic helped me remove that energy and I got a bit better.
For days I felt tingling around my face, head and neck and would feel intense pressure in my chest to the point that I drove to the ER cause I thought I was having a heart attack. All my tests came out fine so I went home. They gave me a bit of a mild sedative but it felt like I was high on something strong (the doctor said there was no reason I should feel high). I went home and kept experiencing excruciating pain to the point of spending two whole days in bed just sleeping because being awake meant having intense electric shock feelings in my chest and it was torture. I spent weeks with intense pressure around my face and head and high heat constantly, like if I had a fever, only I didn’t. One night in particular I felt like my back was leaning against a furnace; it was such an intense heat that it made it very hard for me to sleep. Also, for countless nights I’d fall sleep and immediate be waken up by this feeling of energy trying to take over my body, and that was scary because I thought it was an entity of some sort. And during the day and night I would have intense “orgasm-like” sensations and tingling around my root chakra. They were strong enough to make stop doing what I was doing or they’d wake me up in the middle of the night. I spent a few weeks feeling all electromagnetic fields coming from electronics; holding my cellphone was excruciatingly painful and watching Tv felt like being hit by lighting. It was so bad that I had to spend my days outdoors. Even driving a car was a source of shock energy.
At the same time, through some psychics I discovered that my family was being hit with “black magic” from a person holding a grudge, which made me think that my severe symptoms were due to this “work”,however, all psychics I saw (3) who were also healers and/shamans told me that this person had no real power and that it was affecting me because I was afraid. Once I stopped being afraid, the symptoms faded quite considerably and I would just feel the electric shocks and pressures here and there throughout the day.
Dealing with the psychic attacks was hard to decipher because whenever I felt a low vibration energy around me I’d really try to “feel” what it was so I was literally opening my energy to receive the negative energy because I wanted to identify it. So, I stopped doing that and avoiding even thinking about negative energy when I feel it around; I still start to feel all the negative symptoms but not as bad and not for long. It would seem like the energy tries to latch on but can’t. After it leaves me alone I have different sensations, as if my energy has turned on a “protection” mode.
Now, I just have a tickle in my chest that feels between good and uncomfortable and I have pressure inside my ears and I hear a high pitch noise at times. I cough every now and then I have pressure in my throat chakra. I also feel tingling across by back and a bit of warmth and tingling in my face, but that goes away if I’m outdoors or take a shower. It does come back a few hours later but it’s honestly a blessing now to not feel like I’m dying and feeling hopeless and fearful. I am hoping that this is in fact a kundalini awakening process and that my body will adapt, because I would love nothing more than to learn how to do energy work and mediumship. In the meantime, I have stopped doing tarot readings, using the pendulum and any mediumship practice. I am looking forward to learning and mastering protection before diving into this field.
Keep hope, rest, relax, pray :) it will get better. God doesn’t give you anything you can’t handle.
    Sending you love and resilience.

I don’t know if anyone could shed some light on this situation for me but I’ve had the strangest experience ever this morning and I don’t know what to think about it. I’ve been doing very little meditating recently and have been having very vivid crazy dreams here recently. Last night I didn’t dream at all and it felt like I didn’t even go to sleep really. This morning I got up and was just laying in bed trying to doze off and I had a very overwhelming feeling it felt like my head was going a 1000 miles a second. I seen these very strange neon purple symbols just flashing through my head . My body felt like a feather and my head I had this very weird tingling feeling. These symbols I was seeing I have never seen before in my life and there was one that I seen and I could feel how good it was so I was trying to focus on it but I kept seeing this one very bad symbol that kinda resembled a mendola shaped into a skeleton. It terrified me to the point where when I was able to open my eyes my hands were sweating, my feet were sweating , and I almost felt like I was in shock. I immediately got up and turned the lights on and was litterally waiting for something crazy to happen that never did. I thought I might have been dead or something . It was that terrifying. Anyone ever experience something like this before ?

I finally understand what is happening to me.I am 77 and I really don’t know how long this has been going on. I will just give you random symptons that I believe I have had. This was the first time it got my attention, not saying it was my first sympton, My daughter and I had started somewhere in the car when I had this pain hit me between the eyes and traveled fully around my head around the temple area. and I could see that it had made a silver halo. Pain didn’t last but a few seconds. Then the right side of my neck hurt for a few hours. I didn’t give it much thought as the halo was gone at this time. Then a few days passed and when I woke up one morning the halo was back. It stayed with me all day as I searched to understand what it was. Then it left again. Since then I have been searching the internet on symptons and found the Kundalini Awakening Symptoms. Although I still wasn’t sure until last night, I was awakened during the night with a fluttering in my back between my shoulder blades and a mild heart race which was nothing compared to the high heart race I was in the hospital for a yr or two ago. Okay I think this will suffice to let others know you may have all together different symptons, but search till u find the answers as I did. This is also a top-down full Kundalini awakening that has not finished with me yet but now I know what is happening. Chrism on Youtube talks about the top-down full kundalini awakening if you would like to click on him. Thanks for reading

I knew nothing about kundalini. I have been practising breathing techniques of Vipasna for 5 years. Then i decided to start meditation. One day during meditation i saw some continuously changing forms with a single eye, after some time my whole body paralysed like it was not there i couldn’t feel it, i got scared & stop meditating & opened my eyes then i could again feel my body. It was strange for me i searched about it on internet then i came to know about kundalini power. I continued meditation & 4-5 nights after these symptoms i was sleeping, suddenly i woke up & felt a very high current like sensation rising from bottom of my spine to my head this whole thing happened in 4-5 seconds, but when the current like sensation reached my head i felt peace, calm & happiness like never before. I only experienced those two things. I am not sure this is due to kundalini awakening or not. Apart from rhese things my lofe is very normal.

Namaste , I am looking for help here. I had an experience I cant really put my head around. My entire lower body was jerking and I was getting orgasms for which there was no end, it literally led one orgasm overlapping on the other and which resulted in a bliss I have never ever experiened. I was able to pin point the location below my navel and I would feel intense energy coming in waves one after the other. This resulted in a increase in my body temperature and I started sweating profusely from my lower body which caused my partner great distress (she mentioned this to me, once I was in normal state). I had this profound understanding of everything, how this realm works, Infact it felt as If for that moment I had God consciousness, profound understanding, profound funniness and profound innocence. One look out at nature would bring bouts of tear of happiness, It was as if a dam was breaking open and I couldnt do anything about it.
Am looking for any sort of communication or guidance here, please help me out in any way possible.

I just recently started having experiences during sitting mindfulness breathing meditations. About three days ago, while meditating, my head started moving uncontrollably, and I felt, euphoric may not be the right label, but at the least, I had a sense of peace, love, stillness, etc…, which I never experienced or felt before. Then yesterday I did a lying down meditation, and my experience began with a tingling in my head, almost like a niacin flush. This was followed by uncontrollably head movement, then progressed to uncontrollably body movements, which includes arching of the back, tightening or squeezing of muscles, and arm/leg movements. I would say it probably resembles that of a demonic possession, but I never felt afraid or scared, but rather I had that “euphoric” feeling. I have to point out that these experiences happened 20-30 min into a meditative state reaching complete relaxation, with my eyes closed. However, now I can achieve this in just a few minutes, and maintain it with my eyes open.

I don’t quite understand how or why my experiences have progressed and intensified in such a short period of time. I also want to know if my experiences are common, uncommon, or just unique in my transition. I try not to hyper-analyze my situation, but rather accept it and let it happen naturally, which is totally different from my norm. I have also considered seeking a kundalini teacher/master for guidence, as I’ve considered myself somewhat at the intermediate level of meditation, and this is beyond what if been able to do in the past.

I thought meditations were good for me so I have done them like one year, guided ones, since last winter I have this pressure in my head which has brutally smashed my life.
Unlike you I am not happy with kundalini or what ever it is, this is worst thing that can happen to person and I shall wait several years more this pressure to settle and if not I will have to blow my brain . I hope this new age people that promote meditation are happy now.

I am one of the ‘victims’ of accidental kundalini awakening, which I am guessing happened about six years ago. It has caused me immense discomfort as I had no way of knowing what was going on, I had no idea about kundalini or any such thing, though I am Indian, I never took it seriously. My symptoms were severe.
On what I am guessing was the day one, after an intense emotional outburst, I was lying on the bed when I suddenly felt my entire back spasm and electricity running all over my body.

After that during months to come, I developed intense head pressure, like a band was sqeezing the life out of my head! Vision problems, like flashing lights, sensitivity to light, sometimes vision going spontaneously blurry and then coming back again to somehow normal. Muscles twitching everywhere, I mean everywhere! Body humming with a subtle vibration. I underwent numerous neurological tests, mri etc to rule out anything serious, yet could not for the life in me figure out what was going on. It drove me very weak, there was no energy release initially, I was fatigued and bed ridden and mentally traumatized by this new “disease” that overtook my life! Everybody said its all in my head, yet the symptoms were real. And oh yes, I went to a very well respected shrink and he said that I was completely fine and it was just stress, and just take it easy. I was not prescribed any media. I gained about 20 lbs, the weight I could not lose no matter how hard I tried! I was very skinny before.mThe health problems I had in my early teens came back! My whole body remained very stiff for years after the awakening! Stiff and rigid. Eventually I just accepted what was happening as my new reality and got on with my life. After that acceptance, the positive changes I experienced were immense, I grew way more confident, way more alive. People wouldn’t take their eyes off of me telling me I glowed with a light they couldn’t describe. About a year ago, I noticed that I had grown taller, it was as if my spine had become much straighter and I was about an inch and half taller! Then this summer, my third eye started to just pulsate, and the pressure on the third eye area had been unbelievable! A lot of my early symptoms had disappeared and I was comfortable, but for some reason this summer it came back and my third eye area feels like it’s gonna burst open and a light might just shine through. Oh, and I have grown really spiritual over the years, searching and learning about life, God and whatever I can get my hands on. After torturing me for past six years, kundalini seems to be settling down. However there is a resurgence of her activity since past few days, like rush of heat through my spine, visions of indescribable loving things, experiencing immense happiness that can be called bliss for sure, enormous comapassion for all things living or non living. I have grown enormously intuitive, charismatic and did I say beautiful? This is a type of beauty that is not the sum of my facial features, this is coming from within. Everyone seems to be spantaneously attracted to me, feel immensely comfortable in my presence, animals just come to me on their own accord, people stare and come to me and say that I am just about the most beautiful person they have seen! I have only learnt that all these relate to kundalini awakening since past few weeks. I was in the dark for six years!

      Sai,
So I think I’m in the throws of something very similar to what you’ve described. Sometimes I glowing. people almost tell me their life story and I’m just at peace with now. some times the back of my neck is torqued out. had MRI. had therapist. same feedback. then I some how ran across this Kundalini word and started to recognize many symptoms. bliss, back archs, feel others energy (torso talk), and a few times clearly opening to white in middle of brain.
But now i’ve fallen into back of neck, shoulder blade massive tension with no lessening from going in ward. what resolved things for you? what move this forward. I do believe the world is waking up to a new shoreline. my body though seems to be stuck churning in the surf after almost standing up on the energy shoreline. ugh. any suggestions? peace.

    Hello, I have a question….
I started reading a book from Dr. Joe Dispenza Breaking the Habit of Being Yourself and started doing the meditations for about a week now. For the 1st couple days I did his Water Rising meditation for the first 20 mins then went thru the next part which is about 20 mins longer, then as a curiosity I did the entire meditation which is a little over an hour. The first time, I did the entire time sitting but I had a problem being comfortable so I tried it lying down. The first time lying down I did the entire meditation, nothing special happened which I figured, however since then what surprised me was right after the introduction (about 25 mins) and right after the 1st bell, when he starts to speak of the “powerful intelligence within you that is giving you life, which loves you so much” my body starts to tingle then gets really rigid to the point my back arches but doesn’t flow any higher than mid-spine and last about 15-20 seconds and then fades away and I am breathless for a moment. It did it again 3 more times during the rest of the meditation. During the episode which again last 15-20 seconds (which I think), I tell myself to “let go” a few times hoping it will flow up my spine but of the 3 times I decided to do the entire meditation it basically stops mid spine (which arches my back). A couple times it actually lifted my chest and head off the pillow. I let it happen but wonder why it only goes up to my mid-spine and doesn’t flow any higher? I almost want it to “pop” and feel free maybe have an out of body experience or a calm flowing??? Could it be a blocking in the chakra(s) in the area(s)? If so, any recommendations on meditations to clear it? Or if there are another ideas what is going on. I don’t fight it and I let it happen as far as I know. After each episode, I am winded then I catch my breath and continue on.

All I can say, since I decided to just do the entire meditation I get excited to want to do it again to experience these episodes hoping its a means of something great, but its tiring when it stops mid spine and my body arches and not sure if its supposed to flow up the rest of the spine to my head?

Any suggestions or ideas or advice is greatly appreciated!

    Thank you in advance!
    In blessing!

    HI,
One day, I had a terrible headache. I went in a car, and I lied down on my back. Has I know how not feeling headache, to remove it. I felt in a very good feeling. This increasing, And I felt at my third eye just like a slide than I could make it go on the left or on the right, but in the middle of my third eye, I could stay in this great pleasure as many as I wanted it ! It was the same feeling than the pleasure of orgasm, but I could “control” it. But I was terribly affraid from all of this. In this situation, you pray, because it if very very strong. I felt like I god, I powerful energy was in me, and I didn’t need no one, I was alone, strong and powerful. I was in this great pleasure during about half of a minute. I put the slide off (left or right), and I leaved this feelin, and I went out from the car, and A had no pain in my body and head during half of one hour. And after that, I felt the normal pain of the body as all of us. But after Twenty years later, I arrive at a sort of door, during meditation, I can feel the great energy behind it, but to acces, you must have a very great devotion. But because of stress of life, It is deficult. Know I can see orgon in certain condition. It is just like virgule light as red, violet, or others. Orgon is energy around us and in all univers. And orgone is vital energy who is in us. To see orgon, you mustn’t look normally. You must look just like someone who is on drugs, or alcoholized. As you looked vagueless.

Last night I sort of woke up and was unable to completely open my eyes, I was laying on my belly and I couldn’t lift myself up or open my eyes fully. I felt a presence so I just shut my eyes tight and tried to go back asleep but the tingling feeling between my eyebrows was so intense is was uncomfortable. I just decided to “let go” and let it pass. I guess I just fell right back to sleep.

I haven’t been meditating at all. I used to listen to guided meditation every day and night over 5 years ago. Now, I read some affirmations daily and try to put myself in the situation I want most mornings on my bus ride to work! I didn’t think that was real meditation but just, positive thinking.

Am I being pushed to go back to meditation I once I did?

As I’m typing I’m still feeling some pressure that tickles between my eyebrows and I’m here at work! What am I supposed to do?

The region of third eye is paining immensely . I am afraid to chant any mantra or even do the yoga aasanas i used to know from before. The pain intensifies with chanting any sanskrit mantra (more intensely with gayatri mantra) . I feel sounds more louder and light & colors more brilliant than they are otherwise when can i feel normal again. I’m getting too emotional and irritable at times.
