Posted in Yoga, Yoga Pranayama, Health and Wellbeing, Yoga Videos by Anmol Mehta

Summary: The Free Online Yoga Videos series is finally off the ground.  The first of these ongoing yoga video libraries is going to be yoga video instruction for the practice of breathing exercises or yoga pranayama.  This article kicks off the launch of these (much anticipated :-) free online meditation and yoga videos on Mastery of Meditation.

Free Online Yoga Pranayama Vidoes

Yoga Breathing Exercises Video Series

I am delighted to announce the beginning of free online yoga video instruction and yoga video demonstrations on Mastery of Meditation.  The first yoga video was the AUM Mantra Meditation Video for Kundalini Yoga Class and now when I think back on it, I am glad it all began with the primordial, sacred sound - The AUM (OM) Mantra :-). Now though, I am launching specially designed online yoga video instructions to help you learn and master the profound science of yoga.

There will be several yoga video libraries in time, but the first yoga video series is going to be the Free Online Yoga Videos of Yoga Breathing Exercises (Pranayama).  Yoga Pranayamas use the science of breath control, in order to expand, purify and optimize your entire being.  These breathing exercises work on your many levels and dimensions, and help you reach your highest potential by exploiting the power of prana (chi/life-force).

Use this wisdom wisely and you will soon notice remarkable growth in every level of your being.

Yoga Pranayama Videos Book Layout:

Each chapter of this library with provide an online yoga video with detailed instructions on how to practice a particular yoga breathing exercise.

The chapter will also have written details about the particular pranayama and if an already published document exists with the details of that pranayama, then the chapter will have links to it.  Any new yoga pranayama video that is added will be indexed from this page.

Each yoga video will look to include the information below:

  • Background of the yoga breathing exercise.
  • Benefits of the yoga pranayama.
  • Demonstrations of the beginner, intermediate and advanced versions whenever applicable.
  • Cautions for practicing the pranayama.
  • Common mistakes made for that particular breathing exercise.
  • Any other information that would help you master the yoga pranayama.

[…] All you can do is watch the movie. As you watch and study the movie you start to see its monotony and meaninglessness. You start to see the pettiness of being endlessly drawn into your self-centered drama. This is the beginning of the end. Keep watching carefully, meticulously, and diligently. This watching leads to the movie ending itself. Then you may be blessed with the Truth. So next time someone comes up to you and tries to sell you magic beads of enlightenment, politely show them the garbage can. Anmol Mehta is a Yoga & Zen Expert. Hi Anmol,
Can I practise pranayama when i am suffering from a throat infection? Waiting for your advice.

  35. Josh said,

    Dear Anmol,
Thanks for your fast response. I tried both the Kapalbhati Yoga Prayana and the Golden Nugget Prayana, both the beginners versions. I’m not sure that I’m doing the Golden Nugget exercise correctly. I inhale- exhale, but when I feel like I do a false inhalation or what I think I should be doing, it is more of an expansion of my abdomen- not the pulling up and under of my abdominal muscles as directed. Also, should I do both of these exercises consistently precluding my morning meditation? What time or times would you suggest? How long should I do these exercises before following up with you?

Thanks again for all your help and have a great New Year!

    Josh

    Hi Chaitanya,

If you have a throat infection, it is worth waiting for it to heal. You can still practice, but only do very gentle pranayama.

The following guide for pranayama practice is also worth reading…

    Hi Josh,

Happy new year to you too.

    1. Do kapalbhati first and see how well it works for you.

    2. Add just Udiyanna Bandh to your practice. Exhale completely, hold your breath out and suck in your abdominal muscles up under your rib cage as far as you can (pull the abdomen in and up). Hold, then release, take a few breaths and repeat 2 more times for a total of three repetitions.

    Do this after Kapalbhati.

    3. Then do your meditation.

Try for 2 weeks and let me know how you feel.

    Best,
    Anmol

    Hi, Anmol.
I know that kapalbhati should be avoided during menstruation. But is it safe to practice Breath of Fire during menstruation? If not what can we do to increase the energy level?

  39. Anmol Mehta said,

    on January 22nd, 2009 at 9:55 pm

    Hi Rain,

No don’t do Breath of Fire either. I suggest doing the following pranayama for energy during menstruation and modify the force as required.

    4 Deep Breathing for Vitality

[…] As prana flows through shushumna, it activates each of the chakras, which in turn bestows health to the physical region where that chakra lies. In addition, having the chakras open also bestows emotional and mental balance for the emotions that that particular chakra is responsible for. Once the system is brought to an optimal level, energy (kundalini shakti) can flow freely up and down the central channel and finally up into the crown chakra. This then brings about a transformation of consciousness and the yogi penetrates the veil of separate existence and experiences enlightenment. Anmol Mehta is a Yoga Teacher & Zen Expert. 54. on July 25th, 2009 at 8:27 am

[…] There is a famous story of a Kundalini Yoga Master who was desperate to increase the amount of time he spent doing his daily meditation practice. The story says that the Yogi nailed his pony tail to the wall so that when he would start to dose off, he would be rudely awakened by his contraption, and that this technique allowed him to successfully meditate for 22 hours daily. Are you ready for that? Luckily, 22 hours of daily meditation is not a prerequisite for spiritual growth or enlightenment, but the point of the story is that the ask is not cheap either. So how long should one meditate for daily? Before we go into the numbers it is important to clarify exactly what type of meditation we are talking about here. There are many schools of meditation, each with their own techniques and methods. Here, we are referring to the meditations that are done being mostly physically still. So this would include zen meditation (zazen), vipassana, insight meditation, jyana yoga, the Silent Mind (SM) Meditations, and meditations that utilize an object for concentration (3rd eye meditation, mantra meditation, visualization, sound, trataka (candle flame gazing), 3 step rhythmic breath (3srb) meditation or similar variation of breath meditation, etc). The other types of meditations involving dance (shiva tandava – dance of death), Osho’s meditations (kundalini, dynamic, etc), laya yoga meditations, and other such meditations have specific time requirements to work their magic and I am not referring to them in this discussion. So, now on to the numbers. The minimum time one should aim to set aside for daily meditation is 20 minutes. Why 20 minutes of meditation? From my experience I can say that 20 minutes daily proved to be very effective. On its own everything just start to transform. Others, over time, have also probably found that this amount of time has worked well for bringing about positive changes in themselves and so the number has become the de facto standard for a starting practice. The next stage is 30 minutes, 2 times daily. On my trip to Zen Mountain Monastery for their Zazen Training program, 30 minutes was the minimum time requirement for any zazen session. Also, interestingly at Zen Mountain Monastery, you could request to be struck with a cane on your shoulders (at special acupressure points) to help you stay awake, drain emotional junk out of your system or as an aid to go deeper. This is called keisaku and it can work as an alternative technique for you if you don’t have long hair like our Yogi friend above. So work your way up to 30 minutes of meditation, and try to do that twice daily if possible. Finally, you should build up to 1 hour of steady meditation practice everyday. For extracting the maximum benefit from a meditation program this is the golden number. To get to the experience of “Big Mind” as Zen Master Shunryu Suzuki describes the detached state, or the “Big Self” as described by the Advaita Vedanta teachers, or to get to the explosion of insight as put forth by J. Krishnamurti and the Silent Mind Meditations, 1 hour of meditation is usually needed. This is primarily because it takes some time for the thinking process to slow down and for us to extract ourselves out of the daily drama of our little egos. So there you have it. Start and aim for 20 minutes of daily meditation and then build up to 1 hour. You will find everything you are looking for, as you will discover that everything is you. […] No Shortcuts to Spiritual Enlightenment By: Anmol MehtaA single Shakyamuni Buddha, a Lord Jesus Christ, a Saint Mahavira, a Lord Krishna, a Mahayogi Pantanjali, a Guru Nanak have a massive lasting impact on the whole of humanity, so tell me something, if there was a school, institute, program or person with a short cut solution for pumping out enlightened folks by the dozens would not humanity be in better shape than it is? Would not the message of love and peace spread and penetrate society at least to a larger extent than today, where it seems to be almost non-existent?OK, forget that argument, think about this, would not this saint-producing factory have a line twenty miles long outside of aspirants and be all over the news? This is the Internet age, the age of information, a time where multiple 24/7 news channels thrive, where small news in a remote corner of the world shows up at your doorstep almost instantly. So given that, would not this incredible nirvana factory be the talk of the town? Wouldn’t all the spiritual junkies be flocking to it? But the last time I tuned into CNN, the news was still who just died, alas, I might have missed the grand opening.OK, forget that argument, think about this, the monks and yogis of old retreated to the mountains and forests for decades to practice meditation. Were they mad, incompetent, or masochistic? Were they just plain dumb and clueless to the fact that there was a quick fix available? Could it be that these potent, massive human beings just all kept missing the short cut? These fellows have practiced meditation for thousands of years and all of them never discovered the short cut! No, sorry my friend there is no short cut, but if you are still not convinced I will continue with some more reasons below.Let’s look at life. Getting in shape takes hard work, mastering an art can take a lifetime, learning a science, skill or language can take years, but you figured that the greatest art of all, the highest accomplishment possible to man, would be made possible via a 20 minute CD! Sorry, it will not be handed to you on a silver platter no matter what the salesman says. And speaking of salesman, that is probably the best clue of all that something is amiss. The one trait that is common across all the definitions of enlightenment is compassion. Does it really make sense that a fully awakened enlightened person, who is supposed to be completely free, full of joy, bliss and compassion, decides he would rather be a businessman and only help you if you pay him? He decides to rake in the cash to buy his third BMW since he is just not quite satisfied with having a Buddha Mind? If the source feels more like a business than a genuine place to help guide you, be warned - you are about to be conned. No, my friend, don’t waste your money, there are no short cuts and I will tell you something else, it is not ever possible to have one.Enlightenment cannot be brought about through any act of will. It comes on its own and goes on its own. No formula can produce it, no method can create it, and no path can take you to it. Any effort on your part to bring about enlightenment only strengthens the noose of desire and perpetuates self-centered activity, so no outside solution can possibly work for this condition. To illuminate this point the following traditional example is often used.Think of your life as a movie. Reality is what is happening on the screen, everything that takes place is in the movie; the Truth is the screen itself. It is forever hidden by the images moving on it. It only becomes visible when the movie stops playing. Any willful attempt to stop the movie just adds another theme, another story line and the show goes on. Any angle you undertake is another scene in your movie. This movie has to stop itself and when it does the Truth becomes visible. All you can do is watch the movie. So next time someone comes up to you and tries to sell you magic beads of enlightenment, politely show them the garbage can.Anmol Mehta is a Yoga & Zen Expert. […] How to Opent the Psychic Channels to Balance the Chakras By: Anmol MehtaOne of the most comprehensive systems for describing man in all his dimensions in the seven chakra model of kundalini yoga. The model not only helps us understand the total human being, but also gives us a framework from which we can work towards our spiritual evolution. In this article I want to give a brief overview of the chakra system, but more importantly I want to explain what the psychic channels (nadis) are, how we can use that knowledge to help us make progress on our journey towards enlightenment.Chakras are essentially multidimensional energy vortexes that help transmute and conduct energy between the different bodies that make up a human being. These three bodies are the physical, emotional and mental sheaths and the chakas move energy between them. There are seven important chakras in all and they lie in the emotional body, also sometimes called the energetic body. The first chakra resides at the base of the spine, while the seventh lies at the crown of the head. The other five reside in between. In this energetic body also lies a vast network of fine channels which are called nadis. These nadis, or psychic channels, carry prana or life-force throughout the system, and prana nourishes and sustains the person. Blockages in the nadis disrupts this flow of prana, prevents the chakras from working at optimum capacity, which in turn creates imbalances and problems for the body and personality.Of all the nadis (a reputed 72,000) of the network of psychic channels, there are three that are most important. These three are the ida, pingala and shushumna. The shushumna is the central channel that run through the center of the spine, with the ida starting from the left of it and the pingala starting from the right of it. The ida and pingala then intertwine the shushumna crossing over at each chakra point up to when they reach the Third Eye Chakra in the center of the brain. Here all three nadis end.The ida nadi is the ying energy of the body. It is responsible for cooling, passive, meditative, feminine energy, while the pingala nadi is the yang energy of the body. It is responsible for the hot, active, masculine energy of the body. Normally, one of these channels is more active than the other at any given time of the day and prana is flowing through this more active channel at that time. The key to opening, healing and balancing the chakras lies in having prana flow through shushumna. This happens when ida and pingala are brought into immaculate balance. Kundalini yoga can be thought of nothing more than a science to activate flow of prana though shushumna. All the famous kundalini yoga sets (kriyas), pranayamas (breathing exercises), mantras and meditations are designed to clear blockages in the nadi system, balance ida and pingala and cause shushumna to flow.As prana flows through shushumna, it activates each of the chakras, which in turn bestows health to the physical region where that chakra lies. In addition, having the chakras open also bestows emotional and mental balance for the emotions that that particular chakra is responsible for. Once the system is brought to an optimal level, energy (kundalini shakti) can flow freely up and down the central channel and finally up into the crown chakra. This then brings about a transformation of consciousness and the yogi penetrates the veil of separate existence and experiences enlightenment.Anmol Mehta is a Yoga Teacher & Zen Expert. […] Meditation – The Secret to Fulfilling your Destiny By: Anmol MehtaWe all know the famous quote which says that all man needs to live is food, clothing and shelter. Well, I would like to update this quote to include one more item without which I think life might as well be considered dead. The phrase I think should say, that all man needs to live is food, clothing, shelter and meditation. Yes, meditation is the one item I think should be added to complete this phrase. This is because meditation is the tool with which to accomplish the true purpose of human birth, to find the Truth, to find God.Meditation becomes possible when food, clothing and shelter are managed. Without these bare necessities it is very difficult to embrace a deep and significant meditation practice. A hungry man with hungry children is not thinking about watching his mind, he is contemplating the source of his next meal. For those of us though, who have these necessities attended to, there is no excuse for not starting a daily meditation practice.Unfortunately, the wisdom above is not the prevalent thinking in society today. Today the objective is to accumulate more and more wealth, power, fame and fortune. The value system in place supports this attitude. The rich, famous and powerful are respected, adored and applauded. They are held in high esteem and considered the role models to be emulated. With this perspective attention is not turned to meditation and fulfilling man’s highest destiny, with this perspective the direction is always self-aggrandization.More, more, more would have been fine if at the end one could say, I am happy, satisfied and at peace. But, if one looks around, one finds that this is just simply not the case. All around there is misery, suffering, conflict, loneliness and dissatisfaction. The more, more, more never ends and no matter how much we get, we quickly get used to it and then want even more.I have friends who are very rich. They have plenty of money and power, but I don’t see them as rich at all. Inwardly they are very poor. They are unhappy, restless and stressed. No matter how much they seem to acquire, it never quenches their thirst for more. To me the answer is clear. Their life is missing meditation. Only with meditation can the thirst be quenched, only with meditation can peace be found, only with meditation can the true purpose of life be fulfilled. To help see the truth of this one should closely inspect one’s life. One needs to ask, if achieving the material goals one had set for oneself in the past brought lasting happiness. In inspecting one’s life in this way one can learn about the direction that one has so far been taking and determine if it’s worth continuing in that same way.In addition, to self inspection, one should also learn from the lives of others. Observe those that do have and see if they are significantly more happy than those who don’t. For this you may have to look past the image of happiness they might be presenting, for it is important for those who have a lot, to give the appearance that all is well. Dig a little deeper, go behind the scene a bit and out comes the misery, out comes the anguish, out comes the pain. Want to be joyful, wise and loving, then meditate. If you have food, clothing and shelter, then that is enough. Stop chasing anything more and turn your attention inward. You have the potential to uncover the treasures within, and I am telling you that to dig up this hidden infinite wealth all you need is meditation.Anmol Mehta is a Yoga Teacher & Zen Expert. […] How Much Time Should You Practice Daily Meditation For By: Anmol MehtaThere is a famous story of a Kundalini Yoga Master who was desperate to increase the amount of time he spent doing his daily meditation practice. The other types of meditations involving dance (shiva tandava - dance of death), Osho’s meditations (kundalini, dynamic, etc), laya yoga meditations, and other such meditations have specific time requirements to work their magic and I am not referring to them in this discussion. This is primarily because it takes some time for the thinking process to slow down and for us to extract ourselves out of the daily drama of our little egos.So there you have it. Start and aim for 20 minutes of daily meditation and then build up to 1 hour. You will find everything you are looking for, as you will discover that everything is you.Anmol Mehta is a Yoga Teacher & Zen Expert. So next time someone comes up to you and tries to sell you magic beads of enlightenment, politely show them the garbage can.Anmol Mehta is a Yoga & Zen Expert. […] Ayurveda Diet for Healthy Weight Loss By: Anmol MehtaFor safe and healthy weight loss, the profound sciences of Yoga and Ayurveda form a powerful combination. Yoga providing a system of exercises which help to burn fat, increase metabolism and promote fitness, while Ayurveda providing the guidelines for proper diet and nutrition. In this article I will explore Ayurveda, which is the science of self-healing and longevity.A key concept in Ayurveda is that of the 3 Doshas (humours): Vata, Pitta & Kapha. A combination of these 3 bodily humours are responsible for the makeup of our human body. This article is focused on the Kapha Dosha, which is responsible for fat and is the prevalent dosha in those who are overweight and obese. Thus, from a Yogic and Ayurvedic point on view, in order to burn fat and lose weight one must reduce Kapha in the body.As a quick review the following 3 most important points about Ayurveda need to be remembered:1. The qualities of Kapha Dosha are: Wet, Cold, Heavy, Dull, Soft, Sticky & Fixed2. Ayurvedic healing is based on the following 2 principles* Like Increases Like* Opposites Decrease Each Other3. There are many treatment methods in Ayurveda and of these we are focusing on Diet for weight loss in this article. In future posts I will detail other Ayruvedic recommendations to reduce weight, burn fat and get fit.So keeping the above in mind here are Ayurveda’s dietary recommendations for how to combat obesity, reduce fat and promote healthy weight loss.General Diet Composition to Burn Fat:* 30-40% of your diet should be whole grains.* 20-30% protein (from both vegetarian and non-vegetarian sources)* 40-50% mostly vegetables and some fruit.Specific Dietary Recommendations to Lose Weight:* Since like increases like, the qualities of Kapha should be a guide to help you choose the right type of foods to eat. So looking at it from that perspective one should reduce fatty foods, dairy, ice cream, meats (specially red meat) etc.* For drinks, stick to hot drinks instead of cold ones. Again use Kapha qualities as a road map to help you choose. Drink teas, hot water, instead of cold sodas and milk shakes.* Since opposites decrease each other, use more hot spices in your food. Ginger, cinnamon, coriander and other hot spices will all work to help you reduce Kapha, which is the key to reducing weight. The tastes you should shoot for in your diet are pungent, bitter and astringent. Foods with these tastes are all anti-Kapha and will assist in burning fat. The tastes you should generally avoid are sweet, sour and salty.* Similarly increase salads, beans, dry cereals and cooked grains in your diet. Eating foods with Vata and Pitta qualities will increase those doshas in your body and will work against increasing Kapha.* Eat one big meal a day and make it either your lunch or your breakfast.* To avoid snacking, have a glass of hot lemonade made with honey. This will help burn fat and keep away the hunger. Conclusion:I hope what you begin to see with Ayurveda is that it gives you the knowledge and framework within which you can then customize the treatments you need using your intelligence. That’s why I call Ayurveda the science of Self Healing. Once you know the basic concepts, you can readily apply them to deal with any health situation that life throws at you.Specifically for weight loss understand the qualities of Kapha Dosha and tailor your diet and life style to reduce it. When you reduce Kapha you reduce fat. From a dietary perspective, simply reduce intake of food with the same qualities and increase intake of food with opposite qualities.Anmol Mehta is a Yoga Teacher & Zen Expert. […] How Much Time Should You Practice Daily Meditation For By: Anmol MehtaThere is a famous story of a Kundalini Yoga Master who was desperate to increase the amount of time he spent doing his daily meditation practice.
